Mp3Gain: Normalize the volume of your music

Not sure if this is well known (we've had a lot of id3 tagger threads), but Mp3Gain is a really cool freeware app.

Basically it normalizes the volume of your Mp3 collection. Which, if you have a collection like me, really helps.

And, it does this losslessly. And you can undo the changes.

iTunes has something like this, but with this solution the volume changes are part of the file so they don't go away after a reformat and work on non-iTunes players.

Also it's open source and all that, for you people who are into stuff like that.

I dunno, I kind of like having quiet songs... y'know, quieter.

Um, isn't that what this does?

What usually happens when listening to songs in my car is the quiet songs you just don't hear at all unless you fiddle with the volume. So this was pretty awesome for me. And you can leave your quiet songs alone if you want.

How do you normalize in iTunes? I bartend and like to put my iPod on shuffle over the stereo. I hate having to dash for the volume in the middle of a drink when some album is mastered too high.

Right-click -> get info -> adjust volume. But if your collection is in Mp3 format, Mp3Gain is just better.

You need a player that supports replaygain though, don't you? Most portable players don't unless you're using Rockbox or something.

    No, it's all in AAC.

It does add replaygain tags, but it also modifies the global gain value, which is part of the MP3 spec and supported by just about everything.

How well will this work with podcasts? I don't mind music, but podcasts tend to very.

Some are really low and others are at times low and ear rapingly loud in the same podcast.

It's been so long since I've posted here, I've removed my signature since most of what I had here were broken links. Shows over, you can carry on to the next post.

I assume it would work fine. The ReplayGain algorithm is supposed to be pretty good about figuring out how loud stuff sounds.
