Eight coyotes ring the party, they had been closing in on them in a tight circle for a while now, weaving in between the boulders. They peak from the corners of their hiding places, in tense hunched positions. The party falls naturally into a defensive circle. One large alpha dominates the rest, a huge scarred female.

6. Requine 29/29 HP
7. Pieter 26/26 HP
8. Adrian 28/28 HP
All at once the coyotes rush in to attack, each approaching the party by a wide, calculated trajectory. They assault ferociously, ganging up on each individual and attempting to bring them down to the ground. Adrian is unprepared for the onslaught and is knocked onto his back. Immediately a coyote lunges for his neck, biting down hard around Adrian's leather collar. Solleb, however, leans back on the handle of his axe as he's struck by a pouncing coyote, using his dwarven stability to prevent himself from falling while deftly dodging the massive jaws of the alpha female.
All the coyotes delay their attack until every coyote is in position. All coyotes take the long way around in order to avoid an OA.

Ludious turns his gaze towards the nearest Coyote and lets out a yell to Bahamut in Draconic.
Divine Challenge on C2
He then raises his warhammer and aims it straight towards the Coyote's head. The Coyote attempts to jerk away but the warhammer connects with its muzzle and blood and teeth go flying.
The coyotes lash back with vicious attacks. Arian is ripped to the ground, along with Requine, but Ludious masterfully blocks the incoming assault. Solleb ducks under the incoming pounces of the coyotes, but the alpha launches herself at him with incredible fury. Even the sturdy dwarf is brought to the ground by the force of her attack, landing flatly on his back.

Ludious takes aim at the Coyote he previously bloodied and swings his warhammer towards the canine's head once again and the dazed coyote is unable to dodge as the warhammer reverberates against his skull, fracturing it and sending more teeth and fur flying. The wolf whimpers, a sickly wet sound escaping his half crushed face.
The coyotes stay always moving, shifting right and left to get an advantage on the surrounded group. However their flurry of bites and lunges are dodged and blocked.
Solleb takes hit after solid hit, but with incredible focus and determination remains on his feet after each strike.

As Pieter dodges between the growling coyotes to come to Solleb's aid he narrowly evades their gnashing teeth, though the alpha manages to get a nip off on him.
Solleb feels renewed as his companions regain composure and tear into the coyotes.
He then locks his gaze on the giant Alpha wolf, and brings his axe swinging down towards the animal's head, connecting with a blow that reverberates through his arm.
The Alpha lies dead with Solleb's axe stuck in its forehead.

Solleb spends a healing surge and regains 7 hp.
With their alpha dead and their numbers dwindling, not to mention the number of injuries they themselves now sport, the remaining coyotes immediately decide that this group of prey were not such a good target after all. Whimpering as they run, they scamper away in four different directions.
All coyotes shift away one, and then run off the closest edge of the map.

Pieter takes his rapier and cleans the blade, pausing to check the blade for nicks and burrs. Satisfied with it's condition he sheathes it. Reaching into his pack he takes his water skin and takes a deep drink from it before offering it to Solleb. "Are you going to be okay with walking to the Mesa?" he asks Dwarf.

"The sooner we get out of this desert and into civilzation, the better."
Arian hitches his morningstar and prepares to head with the party.
Using one surge to get back near full. (21/23 HPs, 6/7 Surges)
Before the dwarf slings the coyote alpha over his shoulder, Adrian kneels down to examine the animal's corpse. He examines it carefully, looking for anything unusual.
"I do not know this part of the world all that well, but it seems unusual that coyotes would attack a group of strong willed men and women such as us."
The reasoning behind such a brash attack becomes immediately apparent to you. The thing is starved, all the coyotes seem to be similarly in poor shape. You don't recognize anything that would suggest that the coyotes had been trained to attack, or had much interaction with beings of higher intelligence at all. Rather, it seems that they simply had no other choice but to go after you. The fact that a pack that large would've formed, or be that pressed for food that they would attack a group like yourselves, suggests to you that there has been a recent change in the local ecosystem. You think it's not unlikely that the coyotes got a lot of competition pretty recently.
