Eight coyotes ring the party, they had been closing in on them in a tight circle for a while now, weaving in between the boulders. They peak from the corners of their hiding places, in tense hunched positions. The party falls naturally into a defensive circle. One large alpha dominates the rest, a huge scarred female.

All at once the coyotes rush in to attack, each approaching the party by a wide, calculated trajectory. They assault ferociously, ganging up on each individual and attempting to bring them down to the ground. Adrian is unprepared for the onslaught and is knocked onto his back. Immediately a coyote lunges for his neck, biting down hard around Adrian's leather collar. Solleb, however, leans back on the handle of his axe as he's struck by a pouncing coyote, using his dwarven stability to prevent himself from falling while deftly dodging the massive jaws of the alpha female.
All the coyotes delay their attack until every coyote is in position. All coyotes take the long way around in order to avoid an OA.

Solleb begrudgingly takes a sip from the water skin. "I'll be just fine, thanks. A pack of animals won't be the end of this dwarf."

While the party prepares to move out towards the mesa, Solleb admires the quality coat on the dead Alpha.

"That would make a fine cloak. I don't suppose any of you lot can skin this beast?"

"No? Well then I bet someone on that mesa can."

So the dwarf takes some rope from his pack, binds the alpha's legs together, and lifts the beast, intent on carrying it to the top of the mesa.

Pieter nods to the others as he arranges his pack on his back. "Does any other need a rest? Or shall we push on?" the water skin being clipped to his belt.

"The sooner we get out of this desert and into civilzation, the better."

Arian hitches his morningstar and prepares to head with the party.

"Solleb, a moment, if you please?"

Before the dwarf slings the coyote alpha over his shoulder, Adrian kneels down to examine the animal's corpse. He examines it carefully, looking for anything unusual.

"I do not know this part of the world all that well, but it seems unusual that coyotes would attack a group of strong willed men and women such as us."

    Adrian

The reasoning behind such a brash attack becomes immediately apparent to you. The thing is starved, all the coyotes seem to be similarly in poor shape. You don't recognize anything that would suggest that the coyotes had been trained to attack, or had much interaction with beings of higher intelligence at all. Rather, it seems that they simply had no other choice but to go after you. The fact that a pack that large would've formed, or be that pressed for food that they would attack a group like yourselves, suggests to you that there has been a recent change in the local ecosystem. You think it's not unlikely that the coyotes got a lot of competition pretty recently.

Adrian shakes his head at the dwarf.

He clears his throat - "Nevermind. Let us continue."
