Project Reality 0.9 Trailer

So I decided to make a Project Reality thread since there haven't been any recent ones. It's my first thread so any suggestions on things to add to the OP are welcome. Here's some info on the game for those that don't know about it:

**What is Project Reality?**

Project Reality (or PR) is a modification for Battlefield 2. Aside from introducting new guns, vehicles, factions, maps etc., the mod also changes up the gameplay significantly. As the name implies, it is focused on realistic warfare. There are no crosshairs, no magic UAV's, no kill messages, (so you can't always tell if you killed a soldier or if he just went prone) and no flag spawnpoints, just to name a few things.

Project Reality is currently on version 0.91.

**Features**(spoilered for length)
Project Reality (PR) is a modification for Battlefield 2 on the PC. Project Reality's aim is to create a more realistic combat environment than standard Battlefield 2, and place a greater emphasis on teamwork and cooperation. Most of the aspects of Battlefield 2 that have the capacity to be modified have been tweaked, or completely overhauled, to reflect their real life counterparts, for increased realism. Ballistics have also been audited to reflect those of real weapons, including characteristics such as damage, deviation and bullet drop depending on a weapon systems calibre.

Gameplay Features
Removal of vanilla Battlefield 2 Elements:

•Spawning on flags / Spawning on Squad Leaders.
•User Interface reduction: Removal of several unnecessary HUD elements.
•Automatic spotting of infantry and vehicles using the Q Commo Rose.
•External views for all vehicles.
•vBF2 commander assets: UAV, Scan, Artillery, Supply & Vehicle drops.
•Commander overhead "spy" camera.

Custom Game Modes:

•AAS - Assault and Secure focuses the battles over a few key areas. These areas have very large capture radius (100-300m), which means its about area control rather than flag capture. In fact flags are not visible in the game world at all. In addition to the large capture radius, many of the Control Points are set to be random, so each new round of AAS has a different flag layout, immensely increasing the re-playability of the game mode over traditional vBF2 Conquest.
•Insurgency - PR's assymetrical game mode.
•Skirmish - Small scale infantry mode intended to be played by the Clan community of PR. Intended for 6v6 Infantry battles.
•Scenario - Scenario based mode, that sets specific scenarios for teams to complete, or defend against, to ensure victory.
•Training - A mode for beginners and experienced players alike to learn new systems and try new tactics safely.
•Co-Op - Project Reality's Single Player mode with full bot support.

Innovative Spawn System - Project Reality has a new way to handle player respawns. There is no more spawning on flags or appearing around squad leaders like in regular Battlefield 2. Instead, the players now have the control of where they want their reinforcements to come in via deployable rally points and player built forward outposts.

Revamp of soldier equipment - All soldier classes now carry realistic equipment and useful tools such as: Bayonets, Entrenching Tools, long lasting Smoke Grenades, Binoculars, Field Dressings, and Incendiary Grenades. Only a few classes carry a sidearm, and only pilots are equipped with a parachute.

Non-cluttered HUD - the Heads-Up Display has been heavily tweaked, keeping with a minimalist theme that only shows you what you need to see, and allowing the mods powerful updated graphics to be the most prominent feature instead of non-essential 2D information. The following vBF2 HUD elements have been removed: Cross-hairs, Long Range Name Tags, Enemy

Name Tags, Hit & Kill Indication, Health Bar, Ammo Bar, Infantry Minimap, Ticket Counter (now on map only). The Project Reality HUD allows you to focus on what matters.

Kit Request System - Unique to Project Reality, special powerful kits with specialized roles have now been limited and made available to squads that request them. By realistically rationing unique and powerful equipment, squads now have more realistic loadouts, and have to use them effectively if their team is to win. These kits include: Officer, Rifleman with Iron Sights. Rifleman with Scope, Rifleman with Grapple Hook, Combat Medic, Sniper, Anti Tank, Engineer, Anti Air, Rifleman AT, Automatic Rifleman. Grenadier, Designated Marksman, Crewman, Pilot and of course, the Civilian

Updated Commander Features - Commanders play a vital role in Project Reality as the communications hub and central command organization of the team. Commanders are expected to give squads orders and oversee the entire battle strategy of the team. They are required to command the battle using the Command Post with the new Map Marker system. Commanders can place GPS laser markers for laser guided bombs, call in JDAM strikes, various forms of Artillery, and mark waypoints and minefields.

New Deployable Asset System - Never before seen in a realistic First Person Shooter, Project Reality has a unique building system. Squads can now deploy vital equipment and weapons on the battlefield to defend and control key areas. With the proper supplies; squads can dig foxhole defenses, deploy machine-gun nests and AA positions, string razor-wire and deploy forward outposts that act as a reinforcement (spawn) point for your team. The positions these are deployed at are completely up to the players discretion - this allows the players to have complete control of how the assets are used strategically, allowing players to use smart tactics to control areas of strategic importance.

Logistics - Project Reality has introduced a logistics system that ensures that a team that works together can ensure that supplies, repairs and ammo are always at hand near the front line.

Close Air Support - Players can now take advantage of real modern equipment to coordinate close air support. Jets and attack helicopters across the board now use a laser designation system, allowing infantry units to designate targets for attack. In addition, squad leaders can call in air support via the commander in the form of a 2,000lb JDAM bomb.

Single Player - Project Reality supports Single Player gaming, as well as promoting teamwork-based multiplayer. Simply download the PRSP addon to enable Single Player.

Art Assets
Models - Project Reality comes packed full of quality custom content, ranging from new weapons to heavy armour, all with new custom animations.

Maps - Project Reality comes with 24 unique maps, based off of realworld geographical locations and imagery, and include custom statics. No vanilla BF2 maps are retained within Project Reality. To give an estimation of the size that some of Project Reality's maps include, vanilla BF2 maps are scaled as 2km squared (4km area). Most of Project Reality's maps are 4km squared (16km area), and some are 8km squared (64km area). This, along with less system intensive statics have allowed the team to improve the view distance to more realistic proportions and greatly improve the realism of combat within the mod. More persistant foliage statics ensures that cover actually means cover!

Updated Map Screen Features - The map screen that players have access to has been tweaked drastically from BF2. The ability to "auto-spot" and track enemy units has been removed. In its place is a Contact Report system where squad leaders can call up the chain of command to the commanding officer, and have enemy units marked, deleted, and moved around at the whim of the commander. Player directional arrows have been removed and all vehicle icons have been updated to reflect the various new vehicle classes showcased in Project Reality. In addition to sending contact reports, squad leaders can more effectively communicate by placing markers for APC Transport Requests, Helicopter Transport Requests, Troop Reinforcements

Requests, Resupply Requests, and Build Order Requests.

New main menu - Completely redesigned interactive main menu for sleeker look and easier navigation, as well as new features. Online and offline training modes are available, as well as map overview previews, before you join a server.

Factions
•United States Marine Corps (updated from BF2)
•Peoples Liberation Army (updated from BF2)
•Middle East Coalition (updated from BF2)
•British Army
•Russian Forces
•United States Army
•Canadian Forces
•Israeli Defense Force
•Chechen Rebels
•Taliban
•Iraqi Insurgents

**Is it for me?**

If you enjoy fun, teamwork and shooting stuff until it is dead, then grenading said stuff just to be absolutely sure, then yes...this mod is for you. Be aware though that you shouldn't play this like it's Call of Duty or Counter-Strike. Going in Rambo-style will get you killed. PR generally rewards teamwork and actual tactics aside from just the Leroy Jenkins approach. Playing it slow and methodical is recommended. There's nothing more satisfying than ambushing an enemy squad with a scoped machine gun.

The community is generally quite mature and a lot of players will use the in-game VOIP to communicate with the squad. The best rounds will see you actually employing real-life military tactics to win the day.

**PR is not for...**

..the faint of heart. You will die by enemy soldiers you did not see. A lot. Or get blown up by an armored vehicle you were utterly unable to damage. Or get sniped, or even J-DAM'ed.

There is no such thing as camping in PR - here we call it stationary defense. Sometimes you will die and have to walk a mile just to get back to the action. Then you'll be knifed in the back before you get to do anything and you'll be in for yet another long walk. For those that like to solely rush in their First Person Shooter, Project Reality might frustrate immensely. If you like non-complicated, non-stop action this might not be for you.

**Where do I get this?**

To play this mod you will need Battlefield 2 patched to the latest version, plus v0.91 full part1 and part 2 found here. If it's your first time playing, be sure to read the manual...it helps in unlocking the true potential of that shovel you're carrying...

Well, you've convinced me to search for my old BF2 discs again.

Also, plus about a million points for including Canadian Forces.

As long as you have BF2 installed + latest patch, you don't even need the discs to start it up anymore =)

    See ya on the battlefield!

Do you still have to download the entire thing every time they update? That was what turned me off of PR.

It doesn't look like it. I will granted but I think for the latest patch you can download only the update.

Advice: NEVER play this without a mic. You will get chewed out for it.

It sounds interesting but "realistic gameplay that requires teamwork" is usually hardcore-community-speak for "lame oneshotting overly complicated gameplay" and a very insular playerbase.

Edit: Whoooops missed the "Not for you" part in the OP. Yea, just as I expected. Not for me.

I don't want to judge this before trying but still. These things are always a red flag for me.

I would like to pause for a moment, to talk about my penis.
My penis is like a toddler. A toddler—who is a perfectly normal size for his age—on a long road trip to what he thinks is Disney World. My penis is excited because he hasn’t been to Disney World in a long, long time, but remembers a time when he used to go every day. So now the penis toddler is constantly fidgeting, whining “Are we there yet? Are we there yet? How about now? Now? How about... now?”
And Disney World is nowhere in sight.

Would I have to learn military jargon?

No, but it helps to be able to parse some of it.

I find Project Reality a lot easier to manage than say, Operation Flashpoint or the ArmA series. I mean that both in setting up the game/patches, and the actual gameplay.

You do not have to truly know military procedures, though some servers / squads tend to be more into it than others. When I'm a squadleader on a full 6-man squad it gets annoying if people just shout "ENEMY!" without a real bearing.

One of the few HUD elements, thankfully, is a compass marker. So just look at that and say "contact west" or "bad guys west" or some such thing. Anyone can do it.

Yeah, I know it's not everyone's cup of tea. But once you get in a good squad (usually named teamwork or VOIP) things get to be much more enjoyable, even when you're losing. There's also a couple of roles you can take beside front line soldier, such as medic or transport pilot.

I wouldn't say the community is elitist or insular. It's true that 'vanilla players' are looked down upon, but considering vehicles don't respawn as quickly in PR, it makes sense people dislike seeing a rookie hit the nearest tree after taking off, right?

But plenty of people will help new players ease into the game. I for one will gladly take any of you in my squad, should I see you.

EDIT: Surprised nobody mentioned that huge typo in the thread title. Fix'd now.

So far it taken over 5 minutes to load a server, before the game closes and dumps me to the desktop.

    ...into the breach once again?

This is easily one of the best mods and one of the best games I have ever played. It is just so fantastic. They cut no corners, take no shortcuts, pull no punches: the game is visceral, brutal, and most importantly it relies on tactics and teamwork. The sim stuff they've got is well done, although inevitably my favorite parts are the ones that make it stand out from other realistic shooters: the commander/squad hierarchy, the vehicle and kit usage and distribution, the map design, and the gameplay objectives. Also, huuuuuge props for including basically ever vehicle and gun in every army in the world.

It's extremely hardcore though and not for the faint of heart. It always has been and always will be a niche mod. Still, I love it dearly.

Hmmmm, looks rather interesting. I used to love being commander in BF2, so I may reinstall and give this a shot. Is there any sort of PA clan/group/chat/server thing in-game?

No, not that I know of.

Unfortunately BF2 (and thus PR) doesn't have any friend finding features in-game, so I'm up for suggestions on how to organise a PA squad/team.

Yeah the loading takes quite a while, especially the first time after installing. And you -have to- play PR in high resolution, which might explain your crash?

Ah, Punkbuster. All it takes is several minutes of PB kicking you the moment you join a game for a variety of reasons to remember why I'm happy that service bit the dust.

I've had the same problem with PB in the past, and only on Battlefield 2 or its mods. Going to the Punkbuster site and manually downloading the needed update(s) helped for me though.
