Dew takes a deep, somewhat trembling breath, and speaks:

"My name is Dew, and in exchange for your services on Worldship for the next two days and access to the records library in the Tower of Judgment, I will put you in contact with those who are investigating a link between Lolth and the Abyss."

She takes another deep breath and thinks over what she just said, hoping she didn't misspeak somehow and agree to something she will regret. Nothing in her training properly prepared her for making a deal with a marut!

The supernal letters shift and change as they move around and between Ialaven and Dew, a thin, golden screen almost blocking sight of them. They slow to a stop as Dew finishes speaking, and hang in the air for a long, still moment, before winking out as one.

"It is done," the marut says. "Excuse me. I must hurry if I am to delay their progress."

Before the Marut exits Thaggok quips, "Return to us when you've harried them enough. Or if we finish first, we will find you."

Baern swings himself down into the cavern, repelling down the rope with ease. He is distracted placing pitons to hold the rope in place for the rest of the group, however.

    Athletics: 1d20+11=25
    Perception: 1d20+7=9

Baern has Low-light Vision, if that matters at all in this cave.

Everyone's got low-light vision, actually. It might even help.

    Baern
The line where the light ends is almost palpable as you pass through. Even your dwarven eyes cannot see in the supernatural darkness.

    Besmal
You hear a very faint grinding noise as you climb down the rope. It seems to be coming from the bottom of the hole.

Thaggok began his climb down the rope, sweat dripping down his brow from the effort and stress. Normally his armor would be a hindrance, but Thaggok took the climb almost like a pro. When he got to the level of darkness where he could no longer see, he paused.

    "Should we crack a sunrod?"

    Athletics: 1d20+3 = 20
    Perception: 1d20+4 = 9

Shew, the climbing roll had me sweating.

Tordek strays too closely to the hole's edge, and the ground gives way beneath him. He tumbles and claws as the wall of stone and dirt, and catches himself at the lip of the black veil. The relative safety of the rope is mere feet away, but still too distant to be reached. The old dwarf has no choice but to find his own way down.

The rest of you make your way down the rope, and are soon standing in several inches of viscous slime. You all hear a grinding noise towards what you guess is the center of the pit.

    Tordek
The red slime trickling down the walls slows your progress, both because it makes the climb harder and for the possible uses that keep coming to mind--it's filled with arcane power. It looks harmless as it is, and you've other matters, so you put it as far out of your mind as you can. Soon enough you're ankle-deep in the stuff, and you'd swear somebody was waiting in the darkness.

Map. Tordek places himself in any of the As, everyone else gets a G. Roll initiative. Break out some sunrods if you like.
The white lines represent sharp drops, lowering by one square each as you approach the center. Movement over them is a no action athletics check (DC 8); failure puts you on the other side, but prone.
    Every square is difficult terrain.

    1d20+3: 17 Initiative!

Thaggok's feet sink into the slime with an audible squelch. Taking out a sunrod and placing it in the hand of the arm that his shield was attached to, he cracks the gem at the top, casting light into the area as he lifts his Craghammer from its belt loop, preparing himself for the sound of the grinding noise they hear.

Tordek's swing only hits air. The sunrod, however, reveals his attacker, right where he guessed it would be, despite the sharp drop below it.

The target is hovering one square off the ground at the moment.
    It's defenses are:
    AC 17; Fortitude 15; Reflex 15; Will 14
It's visible now, so Dew gets her charge and no one takes a penalty to attacking it.
