Much as I love this game - and I do - I really really wish the design of everything, from the bugs to the spacesuits to the bloodhound, wasn't so mind-numbingly generic.

The portrait art is gorgeous though!
I wished the Marines actually looked like the art representing them. At least partially. Can't complain when it's free and awesome, right?

Boomer: Three legged thing which inflates and pops.
Buzzer: Flying pain in the ass.
Drone: The basic unit.
Harvester: Puts out little red guys (known as Harvester spawn if it really matters) which explode on you.
Parasite: Face hugger.
Shieldbug: Shieldbug.
The two I forgot:
Ranger: Spits out the three acidic bullets and whines a lot.
Mortarbug: Artillery launching fatty.
So which aliens can be meleed with no risk? I think boomer you can just go up and melee them if you want. Same with the artillery bugs?
Boomers will stamp you with one of their legs if you're too close. The two types of artillery bugs (Ranger and Mortar bug, I guess?) can be freely meleed, I think.
So, without wading through 70-something pages of thread, is there a recurring or regular Penny Arcade game? I would like to play with some people who are at least a little more reliable than random public players.
I've had a blast playing through it. Working on Insane right now (with friends), Insane really is the only way to play. Also it seems the funniest things tend to happen in Insane
What I want to know, when are there going to be more campaigns to download ? I think I read somewhere they included tools to create your own levels?

Pretty much, they included all the code, as well as a tile based level editor. This is a completely free release so personally I'm not expecting Valve to put out any more campaigns. But we'll be likely seeing a fair amount of stuff from the community over time.
So I played through the campaign in easy, but on my own.
(there's a console command to let you start levels alone)
Turrets are basically required when there's a computer to be hacked.
Thankfully for timor station there's a door you can shoot down and the last room doesn't have any spawning enemies.
Reloading is terrible and gets you killed.
Oddly enough you don't really run out of ammo anywhere. Might have something to do with being able to pick up every ammo crate on the way, and go relatively quickly through levels.

Yeah all these things you've said here pretty much only apply because you played it on your own, on easy.
Well maybe not the reloading bit, but you get used to it.
I'm gonna give Swarm Armory a couple more days and then dive in. There's got to be at least a couple of customs that are fun to play, even after just a week.
Reloading isn't bad as long as you get your quick reload timing down.
The big problem is the quick reload bar changes depending on the gun and the difficulty. I finally got used to it for the vindicator and then jumped up to Insane, which slims the bar down by quite a bit. Always reading the bar in the bottom left also doesn't help. I've read the aiming reticule can be read as well but I haven't quite nailed that yet.
I find the only times I really get it are when I stop moving/paying attention to anything else and focus my eyes down on the bar. This often leads to me getting hit, so I often only fast reload during relatively safe times and let the bar reload naturally during emergencies, meleeing if I have to.

How many damn times do you have to complete the mission with no damage to get the Perfect achievement?
Think I got it finally on our third successful attempt, Burnage we did like a dozen times successfully and won't go.
That shit was ridiculous.
I got 0 damage at least six times, yet still no Perfect achievement. The worst thing is that I went on my Steam stats to check I hadn't already received it or something and was told that I was so close to Perfect.

You are taunting me, Steam.
You weren't playing it on easy, were you?

I can see that now, I thought the end was him shouting WHAAAAAAT and pointing out the time cause of getting gipped.
Which happens and has already happened to people in my group.
I think if he shouted anything it would be because of the fact that he nearly died right at the end. But he has the achievement unlocked and his best time is 4:11.

Jump boots and blink pack = 2 man speed run; theoretically can do 4 man if the guys left behind are willing to clear out the escape arena

Marty: The future, it's where you're going? Doc: That's right, twenty five years into the future. I've always dreamed on seeing the future, looking beyond my years, seeing the progress of mankind. I'll also be able to see who wins the next twenty-five world series.
It seriously bothers me that it's more efficient to chainsaw through doors than hack them. I'd like to see the damage against doors get nerfed just a bit.
And nobody say anything about speedruns.
I've done every level but Timor station with 2-3 people, no chainsaws. It's not necessary. I haven't tried Timor yet, but I'm sure it's doable as well.
Rant over, Alien Swarm is awesome, I'm glad I have friends to play it with.
I'm probably really late on this but I laughed when I found the basketball in the first level. You shoot out a glass window in the room with the two hack panels.

It looks like practical powered armor, not the gigantic, unwieldy 40k/Starcraft kind.

I've never been hit by a Ranger while punching it though.
2. Host game and advertise in group chat, or just mention that you're looking to join a game

4. Friendly fire kill.

Oh, I'd take it over SPESS MEHREENS or Gears of War beefmans any day.
But still, they can look like LEGO minifigs at times.

Speed runners might be able to pick up some tricks from that.
