Looking at the portrait art did it for me. SSFIV doesn't recycle any art from previous games, and that Karin portrait is resized and darkened version of her SFA3 art.
Thanks for the advice. I just spent 30minutes in training practicing focus dash ultra and shoryuken focus dashes until I finally linked it all together! I doubt I will be able to repeat this regularly for a while but I am happy to be making progress.
at first you will find that your hands get stupid in the middle of a match, and you'll screw up the motion
but as you attempt it more and more, and as you go back into training mode every once in a while to practice it for a few minutes, you'll find that the the pressure of the match will actually drive you to perform the combo more successfully than in lab conditions, because you'll be reacting with mostly instinct instead of overthinking it
that's how i find it, at least

I try to go to the same room all the time just so I wouldn't have to keep searching. Most of the time I do that to PA'ers since it'll usually result in a good match.

I had someone headhunt me in ENDLESS battle... it was weird. Like a 3.8K PP Seth player that beat me pretty bad. I left his lobby because he was 2 bars (the guy who was hosting his lobby was 3 bars which is why I joined in the first place... his "bar status" didn't update until after the match). He then showed up as I was lobby hopping and I kept dodging him cause like... 2 bars sucks? He finally messaged me "faggot". *shrug*
For ranked, I just join the first green bar match I see. I'm lucky to see 1 green bar match being played so there's a high chance that I'll end up playing the same guy/guys multiple times in a sitting. It's never 'headhunting' or anything like that... after reading some of these responses, I wonder if my opponents think I'm headhunting them.

Apparently Alex and Rolento are "confirmed" now? The rumor has zero legitimacy.
But you know.. if its true, they are both badass characters. Focus is worthless vs Rolento - I'm calling it right now and Alex will be low tier, again.
Not hard to see that is a fake - There are at least five things that pop out immediately. The bottom bars are different sizes, Sakura is out of focus, the portraits are wrong, the other is floating 'outside' the screen, and the dust clouds are wrong.
