I recently acquired Call of Pripjat through the STEAM sale. Are there any specific mods that I should know of before playing the game? I have played SoC before with the L.U.R.K. mod (which made it playable and great in my book) and I don't want to start CoP and feeling that some things are broke (like stealth in unmodded SoC).

Seriously if we had a nickel for every time some came in here and posted in a STALKER thread after Agroprom, we'd all be pretty rich. And hell, I came into this like 3 threads late.

'Few things are worse in game design than giving an enemy an inexplicably enormous amount of health in place of making a better fight.

Ha ha, reminds me of the end boss from Borderlands. But at least he was huge to justify having thousands and thousands of HP. Still didn't change the fact that he posed virtually no threat while you tediously chipping away at his health, though.

OK, so picked up CoP in the sale.

Given that I've heard it's the most stable game in the series and all, is it alright to play it vanilla straight away, or are there any "must have" mods? Or anything highly recommended?

Go ahead and play vanilla. You don't need anything to get it playing well.

On the other hand, if you look up a few posts, you'll see why I think it's a shame to skip SoC and run straight into CoP.

Alright, getting out of Agroprom was even tougher. Not only did my armor completely degrade, but there is absolutely no way to stealth past 25 Ukrainian army soldiers and a HiND.
The good news is I have around 300 AK74 rounds. I think I'm gonna go back to sidorovich and sell my mountain of artifacts for a fat stack of medkits and then find the STALKER armor in Nimble's house. If there is a better place to get armor please tell me.

If you've cleared Agroprom, you should have a straight shot to the Bar; the bartender runs a trading post, and you'll get a decent stalker suit for tagging in the quest. Might run into some bandits and dogs, but you're pretty much home free once you get back to Seriy's camp at the trainyard.

I've had a good bit of fun with the Smrtr mod: http://stalker.filefront.com/file/SMRTER_Pripyat;108615

Adds lots of neat stuff. You may want to play through a bit vanilla just to get the feel for it tho. Vanilla is just about perfect, no big bugs that I can think of.

Since the gunplay isn't what made SoC great, though, it seems stupid that they ditched the most interesting parts in favor of the weakest aspect.
It didn't make the game great, but it was the first thing to hook me on that opening mission. I walked around the outside of the building and killed the last bandit while he was crouched behind cover shooting at the stalkers. Later I was amazed when the military guys at the railroad tracks kept trying to flank me until I focused my sights on them and they retreated.

I don't recall any cool battles like that in CS though. It loses a little charm as the distances and weapon lethality increase quickly.

It really took me until Agroprom to get used to the gunplay. And then I got pretty good. I've gone from constant quicksave scumming to actually being able to live for over a minute most of the time.

On my last play of SoC I was really surprised how far I got through the game depending mainly on an MP5/Viper SMG. Three round bursts to the head and steady, tactical movement really does the trick until everyone is wearing exosuits and shooting gauss rifles. I'm playing through it again (I'd be playing CoP right now but my video card died and I'm on integrated graphics for the moment) and I'm kind of wanting to check out some other guns, but the draw of CQB antics is tough to resist.

Coincidentally, that's about when you get Strelok's fast-firing AK, the best early-middle game gun.

Don't get me wrong, I like the feel of Stalker's gunplay, especially early game. It's just not what makes the series unique, and it's (for me, at least) not what keeps me coming back again and again.

It's not in a chest. If you're looking for the armor I mentioned earlier:
you need to get onto the roof of the last house on the left. On the far side there's a hole in the roof, with a crate inside. Shoot the crate to break it, and it drops a merc suit that you can just barely grab if you're careful

    Here's a video if my directions aren't helpful: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NwxMBuEse6A

And for that matter, don't ever forget to shoot crates and those little metal suitcases you see around. You'd be surprised what you find in them. It only took me two play-through to figure that out.

I used the quick-firing AK for a long time, but since I generally only fired on semi-auto to counter the AK series' poor accuracy, I'm not sure how much good the whole quick-firing thing was really doing me.

But I've never been able to commit to what kind of gun I want to use in this game, I think the last time I left off I was running with an all 9x39mm loadout (Groza, VSS, and Big Ben).

Not only the suit and everything else that is hidden in the houses, but there is a ton of ammo in a couple of crates hidden in the bushes in between the first camp and the minefield next to the Army outpost.

Anyone that doesn't Rambo the first mission has objectively done it wrong.

Nothing feels as good as a crouched, slow approach, a lean around the wall and moving into the house on the right of the entrance. Then *pop, pop, pop*, a bandit drops and you're in business with a shotgun.

For the purpose of SoC, Rambo-ing is being a one-man army in any capacity and having the STALKERs go "Oh man! You were like Rambo!"

And to be fair, Rambo actually did sneak around, set traps and such. I never recall him walking through a front door in any movie. He was always a trap and sneak man.

Speaking of hidden goodies, there's a car park in the south of the Garbage that is often raided by bandits encamped to the west. Behind that camp is a field of artifacts! Also whirligig anomalies and radiation so fierce it doesn't set of the Geiger counter. Good luck!
