I'm okay with Jiro being a Batman. The explain why he took that identity whereas other recruits probably wont, but yeah, I wish that his Batsuit was styled differently. Even a new chest emblem would help.

Maybe Batman Japan has a white oval with a red bat logo?

Kind of surprised they introduced French Batman/Nightrunner in an annual. That's where I would expect Batman Hungary to show up.

I was just a little disappointed that Mr. Unknown's Batsuit was so identical to Bruce's. But not really.

    Me, too. Especially since
Nightrunner got his own specially designed suit in Batman Annual.

    2qj9020.jpg

It's Nightwing-chic, which makes sense. They even played up the similarities by having Dick train him, with Nightrunner noting "this Batman's quicker, more fluid. like me"

and then Japanese Batman's suit is just Bruce's.

I'm starting to second guess myself.
Looking at him in that splash page, now I'm thinking the cowl's all different. Like, the ears don't point up, but actually point back at an angle? Like he's got a sleeker, runner thing going on.

    What do you guys think?

It's not the same suit. The cowl's different (it also seems to curve more at the front of the face), the armor on the gloves is gone, as is the piping on the body. Honestly, if they had made one or two more changes it would be distinct enough.

Batman The Dark Knight #1 is pretty much what you expect it to be. A mixture of early Spawn issues (including bums) with a Wolverine-like trope of someone from Bruce's past showing up that we've never heard of, and the usual Bruce monologue about how his world was shattered because his parents are dead. We also get a scene which seems to be Bruce getting his first erection (Finch had to know this when he drew those panels).

As far as the art, it actually looks very similar to when Finch was on Ultimate X-Men, and Thibert inked him. During Second Coming and some X-Men covers last year, Finch went overboard with cross hatching, but with Williams as the inker it's pretty much all gone, and looks much cleaner. Finch's Penguin is rather badly drawn (looks more like Mojo from X-Men), and it seems Cobblepot is suffering the same fate as the Riddler is in going back to being pure villain. And Finch's version of the batmobile is streets behind compared to the super cool B&R flying car.

So in all, this is basically the same thing as Tony Daniels Batman book, only darker and almost certain to be repeatedly delayed. There's just nothing new here, and even a touch of batdickery with Bruce being a chump to Alfred. Basically every cliche about Batman and his world is in this book (even what seems to be a reference to the Detective mode from the Arkham Aslyum game with the bat-vision)

I was flipping through it at the store, but I decided to leave it.

Sounds like I made the right choice.

And you're right about the delays. The second issue is now scheduled for February 9th. We'll see if that sticks. If there's one thing I can give Tony Daniel credit for, it's that he is very punctual.

It's an exaggeration of what really happened, which is Finch trying to make us believe that this new girl we've never seen before is actually Bruce's first crush (I always liked Zatanna being his first crush). But it's a page that is very odd with the last panels in that it involves them wrestling on the ground with Dawn pinning his arms back, and Bruce is going "um......don't--" and the last thought box of the page is "I was starting to think maybe Dawn wasn't so bad after all."

I'm more appalled that this crush's name is Dawn Golden. I mean, really?

I wish that if someone writes a gritty, or mature comic, they'd pause and consider that maybe their audience has read things other than the comic, somewhere in their lives.

This week's issue of Batgirl costars Robin again. Which means that it's one of the best issues of Batgirl. Or at least it's one of the issues that I like enough to buy.

The past two issues of Batman and Robin may have been pretty mediocre, but I think this new one made up for it. It was surprisingly introspective on the characters Batman and Robin themselves, which is something the other issues lacked.

I really liked that alternate outfit Tim wore in RR #19 this week. It was Nightwing + Red Robin put together, and looked more in line with the Bat-Family than Dr. Midnight.

Backstory question from the new Batgirl:

That issue made me wonder, have Bruce and Damien ever had a father/son moment the way Bruce and Tim have had? It seems like a huge inevitability that Damien will go all evil if his father doesn't stop for a moment and hug the poor kid.

The closest we've seen so far is in The Return, where Bruce tells Dick about him and Damien being Batman and Robin (paraphrasing here) "Alfred...Jim...they love you." Dick responds, "Yeah, well, you should smile more."

Damien's in the room at the time, and, for some reason Bruce doesn't speak to him directly...

But that's as close as we've gotten to that moment. Bruce probably knows that if we ever see him and Damien happy together, the kid will get killed off by DC.

I've gotten behind on Batman and Robin quite a bit, would anyone recommend catching up on it?

I picked up Batman Inc. issues one and two today and I'm happy I did that now, I also picked up Batman : The Dark Knight issue one out of curiosity. I've been out of the loop for a tiny bit, but I'm working on catching up and staying up to date per usual. Is Dini doing anything else that's current?

Wow. That's a fantastic cover. Also, if Catman is dating Huntress, does that mean Huntress has had recent appearances in Secret Six?

And yeah, its a bit frustrating to see all the artist changes on Birds of Prey. I dropped the book after Benes left. Has it been any good since then?

See, I dropped it in large part because there was no way I was going to buy an Ed Benes book every month. I love Jesus Saiz's work though, so I may check that out.

The thing is, I still have no idea what the point of BoP is. What's going on in that book? What's the mission statement? It seems like every team book nowadays is just an excuse for writers to have characters they like talk at each other.

It's a consequence of the notion of a superhero network, I think. Everyone already knows each other, so writers don't feel the need to pull groups together with a common threat or interest. Instead, the network is such that Oracle and Captain America can just hold recruitment drives whenever they want instead of relying on happenstance or fate.

Writers could still bring teams together the old-fashioned way, of course, but they choose not to for the sake of convenience.

Birds of Prey is an outlet for Gail Simone to return to doing a book that was fucking awesome under her last time. And while it's not as good as Secret Six at the moment, it's a good book. Gail's one of the best writers at DC, IMO.

I don't see why people are implying that the book exists because of Benes when it's really Gail's baby.

And Robos, there was an actual storyline reason that the team was pulled back together in the first arc. Also, these characters, minus Hawk and Dove, are close friends who WANT to work together. You're making it sound like they just randomly threw the group together. There's a history here.
