iPod headphone socket dying?

For Christmas I got a new iPod mini battery and shell so that A: my battery will die less, and B: all further battery replacements will be easier. My original blue shell is a little warped, making removing and inserting the guts difficult.

The new shell is nice, but I have two beefs with it. It's plastic, and plastic is not hardcore. Also, the guts of the iPod mini are looser than normal. There isn't even a cover for the bottom. (This means the part that connects the Wheel to the hard drive could fall out if the right thing touches it.)

I started using it while jogging one day, and the sound got extremely weak. I have to force the headphones into the socket harder than normal, and then hold it there to get complete sound. It does not matter what kind of headphones are inserted.

I have no problem opening my iPod, obviously, so are there any remedies out there?
