Every DLC boss other than the Baramos series are available via Tag mode from the DQ Monster Battle 2 Arcade game, as of 7/9 (the day the final DLC quest was launched).
For those of us without any friends and/or living in places where canvassing for guests is impossible, how can we get the inn upgrades? Even blatant cheating via action replay maybe?
How does the canvassing thing work anyway? You turn the DS on and leave it, and does it record each unique DS it comes in range with?

You turn on DQ9, go to the in in Stornway (Store-in-Way? I don't get the pun) then tell Erinn that you want to canvas.
Then, you see anyone ELSE who has decided to do the same thing.
The chances of this happening in the US is sliiiiiiiiim and none.
If you can transfer saves to a 2nd DS with a 2nd game through Action Replay, you can do it that way. Otherwise, have fun grinding the prologue 30 times.
No more freaking Mudo and his goddamned buff/kasap combo.
Edit: Dhoulmagus is really easy in comparison to L16 Murdaw. He does a standard attack that does about 130 on my paladin, a "fast attack" that does 4 weak hits, casts Kakrak, and does "an intimidating scream" that interrupts my Paladin's forbearance.

Nope.
I did that with a Japanese save, and it didn't count as a single canvas as far as unlocks count. Nor did a AR backed up copy of my own save file.
I might try with my second copy, just hitting the inn and then doing it that way, but I'd rather not spend 600 hours doing that 30 times to unlock the final parts of the inn.
Is there a monster in the world that is guaranteed to get enranged when you use Whistle? I could have had this fucking warrior quest done 5 times over, but either the whistle never lands, or if I decide to get smart with the system and defend until it does, then hurf durf, the enemies rage subsides before I land the attack.

Use something that comes in a large group, you can hit multiple ones that way, and they'll be easy to kill.

At which point we reach the DQ series's fun pastime of having 5 identical enemies be split into 3 separate groups, because screw you if you think you're using a group spell like Crackle on everybody.
Sometimes I really hate this series...

As an aside: I didn't level Murdaw to 16 until I got 4 pieces of the cosplay armor from him. Of the 5 I got, 3 of them were from auto-steal.
Auto-steal is VITAL to farming gear from the legacy bosses.
How exactly does Auto-steal work? Does the guy with the scroll need to do the finishing blow or just do damage sometime during the fight? Also, it sounds like it counts differently from the normal steal and drop, so does that mean you can steal an item, use the thief's soup de grace to get an item, and also auto steal a third item?

I definitely know you can steal, and then use the coup de grace and get the same item again, as I did it once.
Dunno about the steal/auto steal bit though.

As far as I know, as long as the person holding the scroll is alive at the end of the fight, it has a chance to fire off.
It does count as different to the normal steal and drop. At the end of the fight:
You get XP
People level up
You roll for random drops (Legacy bosses have 1 mini-medal in a chest ALWAYS, as well as 2 other drops - some form of cosplay gear, and an orb used to create ultimate armor and weapons)
You roll for auto-steal (which uses the same drop table)
You get money
The thief ability makes the random drops always work. Unfortunately, due to the bosses having 3 drops, I believe that the only thing the thief's CDG can get you are orbs.... but don't quote me on that. I don't go in with a thief anymore, since the level 16 grotto bosses required that I actually used decent jobs.
So my current highest level dungeon is the Gold World of Regret, L75. Last boss is the mage, which is annoying (he ALWAYS crits his offensive spells, and has disruptive wave). I am Level 79, no revocations, which means my quality limit is 153, +/- 10%. Unfortunately, that means my maps are going to be 10-16 floors, rank 5-7 monsters on floor one, and I literally cannot get the last 2 bosses I need for unlocking Dragonlord's map, unless I randomly get enough of a plus to hit the 161-180 tier of maps.
My best bet would be to gain 8 more levels, or find a map that's level 83 or higher, or somewhere in between.
My current thought is once I find a grotto with Metal Kings, I'll stay there and work on hitting L99 with my main character as a gladiator, and then perhaps work on switching to Armamentalist as him. An Armamentalist MC would let me buff the party, then use Egg On on my second party member, who is a gladiator.
any reason to get more than 10 points in sage for str types then?
The + to MP and - to MP costs is HUGELY helpful for every class. For example, my Gladiator at Level 81 has 94 MP. 60 of that is from Sage. Looking through, outside of Mage and maybe Priest, nothing gives passive MP bonuses.
Without Sage's + to MP, my gladiator would need MP refreshing after every single Legacy Boss.
As an aside: With the idiots running, it might be more beneficial from a XP/hr standpoint to just farm legacy bosses than try and farm metal kings. They're not showing up very often, run away all the time, and even then only get me about 30-40k XP a kill. The legacy bosses are giving about half that, but I know where they're at. Although, my crit-or-miss chance nowadays is very high on them, and if I could just get crit-or-miss skills on my other characters... That's a thought...
I'm considering lowering my resistance to make the level 40 gladiator quest easier. Will the Hades Helm accomplish that, or do I need to track down something else? I already used up my only pendant, is there an easier way to get more?
L86 now, but christ I remember why I wasn't farming MKS in this dungeon. Two monster types, the armor types that do nothing but chain cast snooze, and "Slugly Betty," a morbidly obese ugly jackal-faced thing that does nothing but drain mana nonstop. The armors show up with the MKS a lot, and the Slugly Betties are so fat that you can't run around them ont he map. Oh, and everything will randomly charge at you on the map, even if you're level FUUUUUUUCK and they should run screaming.
"When you walk up to a monster, if you approach it from behind, you can get the drops on it more often than not. Surprise!".
Thanks to her wacky speech habits though, I'm not sure exactly what that means. You get better item drops if you touch monsters from behind? Or you get a free combat round because you "got the drop on it"? Stupid double talking faerie. :P

Has anyone worked out what Magical Might and Magical Mending translate to in terms of actual improvement in spells? Trying to figure out what something like +50 to one of those stats would actually mean.

I'm pretty sure she's talking about getting a free combat round. I know I've caught more then one Liquid Metal Slime unawares by running into it from behind.
The tag mode in this game has some pretty unrealistic expectations, I got 107 tags in four days of the Comic-Con earning the accolade for 100 guests. Now I open up the guide book and see that there are accolades for 300, 500, and 1,000 guests... I guess maybe if I were some sort of awesome dude that got to go to cons all the time to shill my awesome project I could maybe do that within the timeframe for which I expect the game to keep my interest. But as it is, I only got those tags because my friend graciously took the DSi with him to Comic-Con on my behalf.
I'm pretty sure this game has broken my tendency towards absolute completion.
High Agility and high Deftness are very much good things.
Mine is level 50, steals a good seventy-five percent of the time, gets a crit just about everytime she uses her weapons.
Also a good class for the MC if you need an Egg on, the second best metal hunter class, a fantastic class for fan based healing, and can point me in the direction of stairs on non DQ Boss grottos so I know where they are and can explore elsewhere for loot.
Doesn't a Ranger have more base deftness (maybe agility too?) than a theif of equal level? Also is it possible that the revocation medal for Ranger surpasses the one for Thief in terms of improvement for steal rate?
Doesn't a Ranger have more base deftness (maybe agility too?) than a theif of equal level? Also is it possible that the revocation medal for Ranger surpasses the one for Thief in terms of improvement for steal rate?
Rangers have about 98 more Deftness and 146 less Agility than a Thief on level 99.
L92, finally decided to go fight my L75 Grotto boss.
Emerald Crypt of Ruin L91. Nature type. First floor has Wishmasters on it. By definition, this is a rank C/B/A floor. Emerald means it can only be Rank E-C, this means it has to be C. Ruin means it has Boss 10, 11, or 12 on it (I need boss 12). Crypt means it's any environment, 8-15 floors.
Increased monster rank every 4 floors. So Rank C from 1-4, B from 4-8, A from 9-12, S from 12-15, if I'm lucky and it goes that deep.
Rank B has Metal Slime Kings, so this map is guaranteed to have them. Unfortunately, in a Nature map, S rank has nothing super interesting (no Platinum Emperors or whatnot).
One super good thing about this is that there's a very high chance I'll see some Metal Slime gear, or perhaps even the first stage ultimate gear, drop:
Edit: Just opened a chest on floor 4 right past the stairs that gave me 3000 gold. That's a Rank 9 (A) chest, which means it has a 1% chance of dropping metal slime gear. Unless I start farming Kurasawa's Locker, I'm going to start farming this map.
At L93, 0 Revocations, and in a L91 map, my resulting quality for maps from this dungeon is 93+10*0+91 = 184, +/- 10%. This actually puts me into the next plateau (score 181-200), and means that my previous boss kill on the 75 must have been with a 10% bonus or close. 93+10*0+75 = 168, not high enough to get this map, unless I got the 10% bonus, which would put it at 184 quality. I really lucked out.
If I luck out on this map, I could get a score of 202.4 for quality, which puts me in the second to last plateau (the last plateau is 221+). The 201-220 plateau has ANY boss, but always rank A or B monsters, and always 12-16 floors, so they always hit S rank towards the bottom, which means there's a chance for Platinum Emperors (like Metal Kings on crack).
Edit: Floor 5 has Stale Whales (a reskinned version of a specific boss), who hits for about as much as a legacy boss on my paladin. They also have Cosmic Chimeras, which come in groups of 3 and breath for 150+ a hit. Fortunately they don't have NEAR the HP of a legacy boss. Unfortunately, they're BIG, and fill up the entire coorador, so going to floor 9 is going to be hard. I'm definitely in a Rank B (11 according to the Gamefaqs pages I linked above) area right now, which means I do have a chance to find chests with the final gear in it. I'll come back on a chest hunt after I finish the dungeon (and thus get a full map).
Edit: Floor 9, found a Slionheart. It's a reskinned Shogum with um, Samurai armor on. Definitely Rank A monster floor here, which means chests 1-10 can spawn. In other words, while I might find the ultimate gear here, I'm just as likely to find 10 gold. Chests are always the same rank, no matter how many times you open them.
Edit: Floor 13. S rank floor. The S-rank monsters are the same as A ranks on this type of map, except for 2 additions -- Wonder wyrtle and Widow's pique. Both hurt like hell (the Wyrtle is a classic DQ monster -- Tortogon for those who have played Dragon Quest Monsters -- with a gold paint job). The Widow's Pique dropped a tangleweb. Well thanks, I'll turn that into the quest tutorial girl at Angel Falls.
Oh wait, no I won't.
Edit: Floor 14 is Boss floor. It's Boss 12. Dear god, the game is smiling upon me.
Edit: OH GOD PAIN
He gets 3 attacks a turn! And can stun your entire party with a roar! What the hell!?
Aaaand there's our good buddy, Disruptive Wave. So much for spamming a few thousand damage with my ...
THE FUCKER JUST USED MADANTE (Megamagic, aka "Akira Toriyama designs a magic spell", aka "He spends all his mana in one big spell")
And then he "Prayed to the Heavens to restore all his MP".
Fucking game HAX!
And I have to grind this guy for a 5% drop rate Dragonlord map. *sob*
Edit: Beat him. No map, but I did auto-steal a Yigg Leaf (resurrection item). Well, thanks game, that's helpful. It's like it's suggesting it or something. "Hey, um. Here."
Actually... no map... AT ALL. Not even a "well, here, have another grotto as a booby prize" map. That sucks!
I know this is all a weird half-asleep dream, and I'm going to wake up dreaming on the practice Math 108 final I was doing before bed, but still. Fun stuff.
Make sure you have war cry or something as well. You need to keep them stunned because they have midheal. Nothing like getting them one turn away from death and then they heal all the damage away.

You kill a MKS, the other monster resurrects it, you kill it again (easier, cause it has half HP) the next day, repeat as needed.

Fun stuff.
