Son of a... Well, it looks like I will need to farm items for ashes now. Learn something new everyday.
You can steal ashes from the genie sanguini.
And if you're friends with Cap'n Max he'll sell them for 8 medals.
BTW, the only uncurse recipe I found was Necklace -> Pendant. The rest were just "I wonder if this works with all cursed things". I've been really good about not looking up recipes (even if that means I can't do certain quests for a long time, if ever).
I have no idea on the fashion one, but I'm pretty sure the hunter has a class skill that lets them talk to animals, I assume that is what you need to do that quest.
Man, I wasted so much time thinking that this was the case. It's easy to think so due to what the Ranger dude tells you, but not so much.
Okay, so I'm trying something new, and ditching my Tension/Forbearance team for something a little less mercenary: a 3-man team of...
Crono, Lucca and Marle from Chrono Trigger. Yay for the Toriyama identikit character builder.
Lucca's a Mage (staff wielding, as there's nothing like guns) Marle's a bow-wielding Minstrel (healing and ice magic), and Crono (my MC) is currently an Armamentalist, I'm not sure what suits him best.
What I need help with is: where can I find armours that will make them look as close as possible to their appearance in the seminal SNES classic? If it'll make a big difference, I'm prepared to switch classes: appearance is more important than faithful movesets.
It's been said before but it should be said again. The two best skills you can ever learn are 100 axes and 100 spears on 2 characters. The game eventually devolves into killing metals for xp. Not only do you get the 2 best skills for killing them, but you've also "idiot proofed" yourself. If at any point you start to feel like you screwed up spending your points, it's a simple matter of changing your classes around and taking down a few metals to bring yourself back up to speed.

I actually did this too - although there wasn't a good ponytail option for Marle. I'd just keep collecting armor until you find something you like.

I'm more upset about the lack of glasses for Lucca, I reckon the Marle's OK. I'm currently on a quest to buy one of everything, so I can easily find out where to source additionals for alchemy - I was mostly curious if there's anything I should aim for alchemy-wise. I mean, I understand I'm not going to get a green helmet with an antenna for Lucca, but some poofy white pants for Marle should be in there somewhere.

Supernatural specs look pretty close. The only difference is they have a red/pinkish trim rather than black. Which makes me think that there must be black rimmed glasses somewhere in the game.

You know, I just got owned by Purrvis (lol). Started grinding last night and I'm up to 38-43ish with my party. I haven't bothered with any quests outside the class (vocation!) unlocking ones. Am I missing out on some critical gear before I return to the Gittish Empire? I just realized that I'm out of shops so no upgrades there. Everything else comes from Alchemy then?
By the way, is there a handy list of how to get EVERY alchemy ingredient? Not just the ones you can pick up off the map, I'm looking for the ones you can find/swipe off monsters.

There's a new item location guide on Gamefaqs now that has every single item and how to acquire it, whether by shop, drop, or pickup. Not sure how up to date it is, but I'm finding it real handy. With it, I learned I can just steal prayer rings from genie sanguine's, rather than waste precious sage elixir's to make them.

X-ray specs, buy them at Swinedimples for 3400g. I've had them for forever!
Ok so I didn't read this whole thread (OMG almost 80 pages), but I have a (maybe) dumb question:
When I change jobs, do I always lose all the abilities I learned? Or do I keep any that I've spent skill points on (but lose the ones I learned "leveling")?
Also, can you ever "respec" your skill points? Say I switch to a job that can't use swords, but I've put lots of point there... Those points just lost?

You lose the spells you learned when leveling, but keep anything you learned via skill points.
The class skills and bonuses (from the last skill tree, unique to each class) are maintained; you can only use weapon/shield skills while the item is equipped, but once you master one of those skills you can always equip that item, regardless of class.
For the mage quest to erect a magic ward then kill a metal slime with that mage dealing final blow, can it be any metal slime (or metal slime stack like in cave north of Bloomingdale) or specifically the solo ones in the Ragin Contagion dungeon?
In other words, make everyone but the mage do a hit on first turn, then everyone but mage defend while mage hits and hopefuly the thing doesn't run away?
I had the entire party learn the skill, use it round one, then use their normal attacks (metal slash, flailing nails) round two, if the slime hadn't run away.
Can I just say that it is SUPER annoying that your hit point totals fall down to almost 1-shot territory from normal mobs when you change to another class.
I'm leveling off of metal slimes in Quarantomb, and that first couple of minutes before I get my first slime kill after a reclass is nerve wracking.

I always had fun with that, actually. It's like gambling with your life.
Later on when you've got like 300 permanent bonus HP and really awesome equipment though, a level 1 character is basically a level 40 character.

Is stealing a thief ability, or am I missing something? I switched my MA over to Thief to get Toxic Dagger for the Ranger quest, and when I was looking at the thief vocation list, I didn't see anything that indicated a steal ability to me.

That's great if you "know" Cockney. They could have just called it Pinch and still been Cockney and gotten the point across.
Yeah, that's definitely one of the low points for the "world o' puns" approach they decided to take. I don't know what the heck they were thinking when they came up with that one.

Speaking of Half-Inch : what am I doing wrong with my Thief (lvl 24) that she cannot steal a single damned thing? All my equipment gives a deftness boost, but still, nothing.
What else can I do? Is stealing just terribly ineffective?

It's not really a pun, it's a real world cockney word used unironically.

Terribly ineffective. If you ever want to steal anything you need all people to have steal and do it as a group. Also take advantage of the thief Coup De Grace when you can, and get the level 40 thief book ability ASAP (randomly, automatically steal things at the end of battle).

Basically, yes. Stealing seems to have about a 5% success rate.
I seem to remember someone mentioning an application that tells you what monsters you can expect from the title of the grotto, was that a real thing?

That one just has the items you can pick up off the map, not drops. The list with ALL item locations is here, be it drops, pickups or store items:

I've still never noticed any correlation with that at all, but hey.
Like I had 10 Metal Slime Kings run from me with jobs at level 60, but getting everyone all the way from 80 to 99 I don't know if I even had 5 run.
There's a reason that steal probabilities are so low.
Saw the Minstrel's wear-with-all award. Saw the Muscle Belt I got from DQVC. Saw my female character.
Saw that the devs had noticed that one.
