Damn, the crafting in this survival is so hard to figure out.
I don't want to spoil later things by looking at a wiki, so can someone give me a hint as to some easy starting crafts? The only one I've figured out so far is Trees -> Lumber

I guess it takes a week? If I'd known that I wouldn't have bought it, why do these things always tell you after you pay that it takes a week
Infdev is an older version of Alpha (survival), just start a singleplayer game. Or are you talking about survival multiplayer, because yeah that one isn't public yet.
@Daius try to put the lumber in the crafting window in different ways and go from there. The first tools are also all made up entirely of lumber and sticks. To be honest I didn't bother with experimenting myself and just looked up all the patterns on the wiki.

I was logged in on the Minecraft site when I clicked the Paypal link. Once I paid, I clicked the link for the alpha client, downloaded, put in my login info, and was rolling. Although, as I understand it, the Alpha is survival only.

lumber can make sticks.
sticks are very useful for many things.
hopefully that didn't give away too much
edit: also yeah looking at the wiki is just going to make life a lot easier, i would say the crafting stuff should be public knowledge, at least the basic stuff

If you don't want mobs ruining your business, you can set your difficulty to Peaceful.

the real question for me is how far momentum carries a minecart. Having fallingwater become a minecart terminal with tracks off to various locales would be awesome.

Wait a minute, what you can craft is dependant on how you lay things out on the crafting screen?
heres a PNG of my current fort during the day, and during the night
day:
Here it is at Night
That weird square is where minecraft re-used an old world that doesn't have any caves in it. i know it doesnt because i checked with cartograph. Its an odd glitch in the map making, and furthermore it had my old base in it too.

Here's an important tip: some things can't be collected except by breaking them with specific tools. For example, you need a pickaxe to collect stone. You can still break it unequipped, but you won't get a block for it.

Quite impressive, Mighty, quite impressive. Could you provide some close-up screenshots of your fort?
And I really need to figure out how to get cartographer to run on my computer.
fucking creepers... i just built my earth tower and i went up top and saw no enemies, so i popped through the front door and there was a creeper 2 inches to the left of me. needless to say he blew me up along with half the fort.
thank god i didn't make a sand castle

All of the locations (except WTF-Henge) are connected via tunnels. Both the Stonehaven Overseer's Office and Evergreen Place have deep mines under them. Sealed off when not in use, of course.
Here she is at night. Pity the picture doesn't do much justice to the depth of Stonehaven. The white line along the upper edge of the strip mine is a glass staircase.
Argh I want the server to come back up! You guys can't get me hooked and then have it down the entire next day.
I've got an awesome idea for what I'm building next. It'll be big (30 blocks high and 38 blocks wide) but it'll be super cool and so you should make the server come up so I can make it.
Im doing a little cave creation in my gimped chunk. something about TNT and lots of it!
i seem to have wandered into a party, theres at least 4 zombies, 2 skels, and 3 creepers here. i have stranded myself above a pit to avoid dying, as i am at 1/2 heart.
In one of my maps I was playing in that got wiped, I was able to find two secret rooms both with Spider Spawners. The first one was at the end of a long drop with a waterfall, and the next one was just around the corner with another chest. I was so excited, but it was a bitch trying to get the loot. Spiders everywhere.
I think I still have that map, everything I build just disappeared.
Going out and exploring is great. Doing so without a proper plan on how to get home is less great. I did place torches along the way, but apparently not frequently enough to be really useful. I can't even use the map visualizer to find the way, as I went through caverns I found at several places.
On the bright side, I found a lava spring, so if I can get back to base I have two and can get infinite lava.
This game can be pretty scary at night, when you can hear, but not see a monster.
Yeah I'm glad I bought this, it's already fun running in terror back to my little treehouse base as soon as night starts falling. I've already been blown up by a creeper and tried to go toe to toe with a skeleton archer cuz I had no idea what I was doing.
Can't imagine how fun multiplayer will be.
Edit: Oh god what is that sound it sounds like it is slurping
Inspired by the linking islands idea I have thrown up a scaffold from island one, where falling water is, to island two, where I initially went spelunking.
While this is only a single span of stone for the most part, there is a base on the falling water side, two legs with ladders, and should help out whoever wants to continue this, without them having to constantly fall in the water.
views due east and due west from the beginnings of the spar to the spawn point.
FUCK! I got killed by a creeper, far away from home. And I was carrying some good stuff I was hoping to bring home. A bunch of tools, coal, iron and a bucket with a lava spring.
I don't want anything to do with that world right now. It's not even like I had built anything cool. Just a tiny house and a hole in the ground.
I'm tempted to put the difficulty on hard, I'm assuming that makes the night time all the more terrifying. I'm having such a blast already. I moved from my treehouse fort to a tiny cave I dug into. Currently my only connection to the outside world is a one block hole in my stone door. I am hoping this will prevent any nasties from getting inside while also letting me actually tell when the horrific night is gone.

I put it on hard because I saw very few enemies. For a long time I didn't notice any difference, but eventually I ended up being met by five creepers at the same time, which got me killed. Well, that and trying to kill more of them after having killed one.
I'm the opposite, I'm finding it increasingly annoying that slimes respawn in caves that you've already cleared out. I just want to go exploring and not have to worry about running around my own caves.

Weird, I wonder how the spawning works. When I was in my treehouse fort, I looked down and saw zombies, skeletons, flaming skeletons, spiders, creepers, and god knows what else all over the place, and this was on normal. Even when day came they still lingered at the base of my treehouse, waiting to eat me/blow up on me

Why not have the best of both worlds? Log flume!
Yeah I asked in the SE++ thread and sent Fort a pm, all I can do right now.

Maybe not logs, but you can use boats for that.
Load it up, hit F1-F5 (Save files), and see it all! Click and hold to drag the map, double-click to zoom, etc.

I know that, but I'm pretty far away from spawn and I'm not entirely sure what direction I would need to go.

Shouldn't more light fix that?
