So how come MH4 isn't also being ported to the WiiU like Mh3 Ultimate?

No idea. This is the first time a new numbered MH has debuted on a portable system. So who knows what they'll do. It could still get the WiiU treatment, but probably further down the line, after they iterate on 4 a few times, like with MH3U.

I'm willing to bet MH4 is on 3DS first because portables are where MH has been most successful overall.

I don't like portables for the most part. I'd buy this on WiiU even if its just upscaled. I did a couple MH on psp and hated it. I cant stand the small screen or controller. I dont care for portables outside of my iPad really. Doesn't help that the graphics are still PS2/PSP stuff like theyve been for 10+ years now. I want to like and support MH, but this will be the first time I pass.

When America starts buying MH games, regardless of platform, at the level Japan buys PSP MH, and presumably will buy 3DS MH4, Capcom may give a damn about what we want. Until then they're too busy swimming in their MH modeled Scrooge McDuck vault to give a shit what we think.

If someone can either post or link to what's actually in the two demos that would be swell. I read elsewhere there may be slight (as in one wyvern difference) in the 3DS and WiiU demos.

Just booted up the demo on the Wii U. There are 2 hunts, one labelled as "Easy" which is a Lagombi and another labelled as "Hard" which is a Plesioth. Upon choosing you get to choose from any of the weapon types. Going to start a hunt now.

Thank you sir. Now we just need to see what's in the 3DS version. Curios if there is a difference in monsters, even if only one of those two are switched with something else.

Holy crap no. Just tried the demo, it's terrible without dual analogs. Like unplayable bad. This game just went from insta-buy to insta-buy if I can get a pro controller, otherwise there's no point. You can't control the camera quick enough to do shit.

    I was afraid of this.

And the demo is up. Downloading to try out new weapon types (new to me anyways, having only played Tri).

Amazon has a $20 off deal for getting both Wii U and 3DS versions. It's tempting. Does the 3DS version require/pack in the CPP thingy or whatever?

I'm on the 3DS version. The bottom touchpad has your camera controls. So you're pretty fucked if you want to move the camera while doing another action, since your thumb does both. Anyone know how to lock on to monsters? I thought Ultimate let you do that.

Edit: nvm, you can't. The L button just centers the view.

Oh, sorry, thought you were on the WiiU. Until I figured out "the claw" I played MHFU and MHP3rd pretty successfully without dual analog. You just have to learn the downtimes of when you can take your thumb off the movement and move it to the camera to reposition it. It's tricky, but possible. I'm with you, though, that Dual Analog is, by far, the easiest way to do it.

Definitely! I got the WiiU specifically for Monster Hunter U anyway (although I'm sure it'll be populated by Marios and Zelda's eventually), cause I just don't find handheld Monster Hunters as exciting as Tri...I know it's blasphemy, but I think because Tri was my first and favorite it's kind of my benchmark.

You get use to it. Left shoulder button should center the camera if it is like the psp versions. Get in the habit of spamming that and then use d pad to fine tune when you have the time or need. At first it feels a little cumbersome but after a couple hundred hours you won't even notice it. Some times playing Tri on the Wii I almost missed it. In fact I would have preferred playing it with one analog over having that terrible classic controller plugged into another controller just to play it. That was so terrible.

Unless I am doing it wrong the double tap L to focus the camera on the nearest big monster isn't working in the Wii U demo.

While both PSP and 3DS only have one analog, the placement of the dpad makes all the difference. The PSP's button layout allows for "The Claw". The 3DS's layout does not.

I'll give the demo a shot on 3DS today, but I'm expecting that I'll have to buy a Control Pad Plus XL.

  • EnlongEnlong Registered User regular
You can use either the icon on the touch screen or the actual D-Pad itsel to move the camera.

While I think I can get used to this, I agree that it's crying out for some form of customization.

However... if we were to put camera control on the shoulder buttons, where would the Run button go?

The Target Camera, when activated, centers on the large monster when you tap L once and behind the hunter when double-tapped. This does not lock the view, it only re-centers it.

It has to be enabled via the touchscreen options, and when you do, there's an icon in the upper-right corner. When you tap L, and there's more than one large monster, there's a red crosshair that appears briefly on the monster. This likely allows selection of which monster to target, though how I don't know yet.

You can see it at work in this video:
    http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=XpoTl4gagTk

With the Target Camera active, the icon at the upper-right has a monster with a ? over it if there's no large monster to center on. When there is a large monster, the icon of the monster it will center on is shown.

If you're not seeing any icon in the upper-right, then the Target Camera mode is off.

I'm assuming, since I've never played PSP MH, you guys having difficulty never played MH1 and started with Tri then? The thought of the right analog stick doing anything but attacking just wouldn't be MH.

Speaking of which, that control scheme still exists, at least for the Wii U version right?

Ah, thank you. Figured it out.

The gamepad has the ? icon when no monster is nearby but that changes to the monster when he is in the area. Nothing shows up on the main hud like above but when I tap his picture on the pad it highlights with a target icon and now the camera turns to face him when needed.

Excellent, yeah. Got the lock on working. Playing without it is silly. Managed to kill the bear with a s&s (eeww). Gonna try a bow and see if the camera copes.

Edit: Nah, the camera is terrible with ranged weapons, the shots aren't clearly visible so you can spend 20 shots shooting at thin air since you don't get tracers or hit confirmations. When you center the camera on the enemy your character faces slightly skew, so you have to manually compensate but you're limited to one of 8 directions. So if the enemy isn't standing juuust right you have to move to get a shot off. You might as well just take a melee weapon for all the time you lose lining up shots.

yeah, the control scheme is awful without dual analogs. veteran players like to tout their "well I used the claw technique and it's perfectly good" but that doesn't excuse the fact that it's just objectively a suboptimal/wonky control scheme.

I've beate down that tundra guy with twin swords, a Hunting Horn, and a Bow so far. Gonna try a Gunlance, then figure out how Switch Axes control now, and then try Plesioth.

1: I sincerely hope there are more than two "songs" for the Hunting Horn.
2: Dash Juice and Twin Swords Demon Moe sounds like a match made in heaven.
3: If you coat your arrows, and then do melee, does the melee attack get the power of the coating?

1: I sincerely hope there are more than two "songs" for the Hunting Horn.

Different hunting horns have different songs, they'll have three or four notes that will do different effects, depending on how you activate them. Certain Hunting Horns will also actually have "hidden" songs that you can play by combining certain notes, that are not listed in the weapon's song list

2: Dash Juice and Twin Swords Demon Moe sounds like a match made in heaven.

Dash Juice plus Dual Swords is an amazing combination, truly.

3: If you coat your arrows, and then do melee, does the melee attack get the power of the coating?

Not sure of this one, I do believe in MHP3rd, when you would sleep-coat the arrows, the attack would put the sleep counter on them, but not 100% sure.

3.5: What is C. Range Ammo? Close Range Ammo? Does it do more damage when you fire point-blank?

Close Range Ammo allows you to do full damage when you're close range. The Bow and Bowgun will do less damage with a normal shot if the monster is too close, I forget what the actual distance is, but the monster needs to be a few yards away from you in order to have your shots do full damage, otherwise it gets cut in half, I believe. WIth Close Range Ammo, you will do full damage to the monster regardless of how close they are to you.

Sorry for double-post, but basically Gunlances are mostly point-blank range shots. However, Gunlances will have different "styles" to them, like Long, Normal or Spread. The description of the type of shot will change how far the shot flies, or how the shot behaves. Good rule of thumb, though, is that the Gunlance is meant for you to stab the monster, and then immediatly explode the shot to do extra damage, at least that's how I've efficiently Gunlance'd in MHP3rd.

Your best bet on these questions, would be to Google Monster Hunter Wiki, they have a virtual treasure trove of information on there on the many many complex mechanics of the Monster Hunter franchise. You can even see on there which monsters are weak to which elements, and which body parts are weaker or stronger.

Good to know. I was wondering if there was a penalty for staying too close.

So far, I think Twin Swords and Bows are my favorite of the weapon types that weren't in Tri. Bows have this wonderful versatility to them, though the way your camera moves in the "see your trajectory" mode is just painful.

I took on the Plesioth with Switch Axe, and I love that thing as much as I did in Tri. Haven't played Tri in a year, but I got right back into the swing of things; it's got all its old combos, wihc is nice.

Are there new areas in Tri U that weren't in Tri? Becasue as much as I like Tri's areas, it does have this unshakable feeling of "been there, plundered that". Only a little, though, since we've got all these new monsters to murder.

As to coating arrows in melee, I was seeing the visual effect of the status when performing melee, so I'm assuming that the effect is part of the melee attack too, but I dunno. By the way, the Bow's melee attack is kinda hilarious. That is an enormous arrow you're using as a knife.

Different hunting horns produce notes of various colors. One horn will make Red, White, and Green notes. While another will have Blue, Purple, and Red. Different combinations of colored notes produce different effects when "locked in". So that means different horns can play different songs.

One horn may be good for healing and buffing strength, while another may be good for buffing endurance and granting resistance to fire. That's generally what you can expect.

Also, you can expect hilarious recreations of real-world musical instruments. One of my favorites is an electric guitar made out of stone. Cue every "rock" pun I can think of.
