Been forever since I played tri. Are there buttons for dive and rise in the water? Been playing 3rd for the past year.
For the classic controller there's an option you can switch on to make ZL and ZR be dive and surface. You can use this with or without the camera angle being able to affect your vertical swimming direction.
Not sure how this works on WiiU but this is how it is for Tri.
Ah, I never had the classic controler, so I wa smade to re-orientthe camera, which was fine when I got used to it.
Wait, three notes?
...oh, I bet that I have to hit both attacking buttons at once to do that.

Even though I could never get the Hunting Horn to be a viablo solo weapon (I'm just too derpy with it), I absolutely LOVE that weapon and can't wait to use it in a group setting. I already run the Qurupeco gear with a Paralyzing Sword and Shield in Tri for the sake of being the group healer and support character. Running in with a hunting horn and rocking out to awesome tune-age while everyone else is beating the crap out of the monster while berserked and healed and windproof and soundproofed anda ll that...it's just DELICIOUS!

Also, depending on which direction you're holding, you'll do a different move while playing the note. I've had lots of very hilarious moments where my hunter was rocking out some snappy song, while pretty-much breakdancing and beating the shit out of whatever happened to be unlucky enough to be close to him. Hunting Horn turns Monster Hunter into this weird rythm game which is awesome!

Ooooh, Blue notes completely change the game, here.
So, here are the songs I've found:
WW: Move Speed Boost OR Attack Deflection Prevention
WGW (or was it GWG?): Health Recovery
WGB: Stamina Use Cancel (so, a Hunting Horn is Dash Juice on demand!)
BBG: Wind Pressure Negation
WBB: Defense Boost

If you like finding things out yourself (regarding Hunting Horn songs) do NOT click the spoiler:
this isn't for Tri Ultimate, of course, but the songs aren't really expected to change all that drastically

I used the Hunting Horn almost exclusively in MHFU. Right before I hit G-rank I was rocking (heh) out with the Basarios Rock. Giant electric guitar that made sweet metal riffs for notes. Basically turned the game into a slightly slow Devil May Cry lol.
I love Hunting Horns.

Also, be advised that you can use the same song two times in a row for either an extended, powered up, or slightly different version of the buff. Like you can give yourself a Defense (S) boost with a song, play it again and it becomes Defense (M).

Higher level horns are pretty fun stuff now with Orange notes added. They tend to have some stronger effects right out the gate, or specialty things like status or elemental up, attack+defense in a single song, and a few other neat things.
Beat Plesioth with the Switch Axe and with the Hunting Horn. Tried Dual Swords, but he ran out the friggin' timer.

I had a feeling the swimming controls would not work with a single analog stick...
Guess I'll have to pick up one of those second stick add-ons before the game proper releases.
At least the land fighting is mostly fine, no worse than the PSPs at least anyway.
The lock-on recenter makes maneuvering with the Plesioth a lot easier (says the guy who just timed out when trying a bow, too).
Also, there is a way to swim straight up/down.
Hold up and press and hold B to swim straight up (after a dodge), or hold down and B to swim straight down.

Psssh I ain't using no lock-on for monster hunting, that just ain't right.
In fairness I did only play versus the Plesioth once, maybe the controls will click a bit better on repeated attempts.

Is the demo limited to 20 minutes per hunt as in past demos? The full game generally allows up to 50 minutes per, with few exceptions (Ceadeus for example).
FYI in the full verson you can reconfigure the touchpad very much like choosing, resizing, and arranging the widgets on an Android home screen.
It's ot so much lock-on as a camera re-center that re-centers it on the monster. Of course, it only centers it to where the monster currently is.
I think it's a big help, since the control scheme doesn't allow for the smoothest of camera control otherwise.
So, I really am liking the Bow.

So what I had speculated about did sort of come true; it's not full-on AdHoc party but effectively the same thing just for MH3G/MH3U. Really, it should be expanded to all 3DS games if isn't already. Will have to track down that latest Nintendo Direct.
Edit: Watched it. It works exactly like Adhoc Party in that the WiiU needs a wired connection because it's using the wireless to act as a bridge for the 3DS. So you would need the USB LAN adapter for Wii/WiiU
I could never get into dual swords. I think the only ones I ever used and actually beat a monster in a respectable time was the Dragon Element ones in MHFU. With some Mega Demondrugs and Element Atk Up gems, I could drop Lao Shen pretty quick. Not as quick as a Longsword or Greatsword, but pretty quick. I can't wait to pick up a WiiU and try the new Monster Hunter online. I love yelling at people that use the LS in online hunts. Go ahead, trip me up one more time...I'll uppercut you with this hammer SO hard...

Yeah, I'm just messing around. Tried out the monster-centering camera versus the koala guy, makes things a lot easier without trivialising things, pretty nice.
Unfortunately I only figured out how to do the Bows new arrow rain attack thing right at the end of the quest so I didn't get to test that properly yet.
Killed the water thing with dual swords. I felt incredibly underequipped for that hunt in terms of consumables. When it goes into it's crazy sequence of 1. tail attack 2. Repeat step #1 there literally nothing you can do but stand and watch. /annoying
What's the dealio with the switch-axe? It feels pretty good, but what's the draw there? (why not pick a long sword, for example) I have no idea how they work!

Dodging in MH has invincibility frames. So long as the attack isn't connecting with you before or after that moment where you're invulnerable, you don't get hit. When the dual swords are all charged up and you gain the "sliding" dodges, the invincibility frames are long enough that you can probably evade into and past most tail whips, sliding right "through" it unscathed.
Many players do this already do lancing Plesioth in previous games, since the lance's sidestep and backhop are generous in both how long you can't be hit and how far they move you out of the way. The new fully-charged dual sword's dodges are even more generous than that. Here's a great video from MH1/2 which helps illustrate the subject, even though it's not for the current games and weapons:
When it's charged up, point that red circle at your desired target and shoot with the A button instead of X. You shoot a special projectile in the air that rains down certain shot Types on the selected area.
What's the dealio with the switch-axe? It feels pretty good, but what's the draw there? (why not pick a long sword, for example) I have no idea how they work!
They switch from axe (long sword like) to sword mode (gs like, sorta), giving you a bit of flexibility in movement and power, depending on what you like. It also has the phial aspect, which you can charge up and blast at your target.
yeah, the control scheme is awful without dual analogs. veteran players like to tout their "well I used the claw technique and it's perfectly good" but that doesn't excuse the fact that it's just objectively a suboptimal/wonky control scheme.
I get that a lot of people may wag an epeen about being a veteran, but I've used the same control scheme for three monster hunter games without any of the issues anyone in this thread is describing. I've never used the claw technique and had to look up what the hell that was. Why is it so bad to hit L1 to re-focus the camera like countless other games where you hit a button to focus the camera behind your character? The only time I make much use of the d-pad to move the camera is swimming in Tri, otherwise L1 is all I'm using as it's objectively faster than panning MH's slow ass camera around.
If the complaints are screen size then I'll buy that; watching a friend play MHFU on the PSP's screen looked abysmal tome but I'm not a big handheld fan.
All that in mind, after skimming the thread while I was out, can anyone confirm "legacy" controls where right stick is used to attack? Like Ice said after I asked the first time a page or so ago I really don't want to use the shitty button control scheme...

On the Classic Controller Pro I believe it's the L2 and R2 equivalents (Zr and Zl?) that move you up and down. I never use them though, always seem to be swimming forward and using the camera to move up and down like someone else already mentioned.
Edit => I'm hopping online on Tri. My friend code thingy or whatever nintendo/MH calls it should be under my name. If anyone's on and wants some help or a partner let me know, and like always, just add something as simple as PA (that can be the whole message) and I'll get back to you.

Tell me more about charging those swords. All I did was 'A' button it in the legs and head (I use the Lance in Tri and nothing else)
When you go into demon mode, your stamina will start to decrease but each successful hit will charge a red bar under your health. When it tops out, you'll get a glowing red aura and some of your attacks will change. You also get the ability to lunge-dash as IceBurner mentioned which takes the place of your roll while the swords are out. You can you use the lunge's invincibility frames to dodge through certain attacks and it enables you to stay right in the enemy's face and keep swinging away. In P3rd, using stamina potions would allow you to maintain your demon mode longer but it cut the overall duration of the potion. One of my favorite setups in P3rd is to chug a mega juice, jump in, get enough hits in demon mode to max the buff gauge and then turn it off. I could then use the lunge to cancel combo strings and keep the pressure on while maintaining mobility. It's pretty fun once you get the hang of it and slotting in evade + and evade distance makes it even better.
The Axe form has one of the longest reaches of any melee weapon, making it ideal for poking a monster, and for slashing certain body parts. Most monsters can have their tail cut off to get stuff, and the Switch Axe is pretty ideal for doing that.
The Sword mode has a fun bonus. If you hit a part of the monster that is too tough for your weapon's current sharpness, it will bounce off and do minimal damage. There is a special Armor skill called ESP that negates that whole thing. The Sword Mode of a Switch Axe always has ESP, so you can hammer away at armored ridges all day and do full damage. It's great for breaking monster body parts.
And yeah, the Phial thing. Each different Switch Axe has a special Phial that activates in sword mode. Some have extra elemental properties, some deliver paralysis, and the best are Strength Phials wich give a flat boost to damage while in Sword mode.
Oh, and another fun trick. Try hitting X and A at the same time while in Sword Mode, and repeatedly tap X (or A. I dunno which one).

Dual swords have a gauge at upper left which fills as you hit things with attacks in Demonized mode, which you activate with R. this mode drains your stamina but increases power and changes your move set. Once the gauge is filled you get demonized attacks without being in that mode and your dodges turn into the slidey ones.
Ah, I gave the Arrow Rain a shot. It's interesting, but I don't know how useful it is. It has this nasty tendancy to be just slow enough that the monster has vacated the premises by the time the arrows fall.

I think it might cause stamina drain if it hits? Which is nice, but yeah, something to use when the monsters tripped or trapped or whatever I think. Like the DS demon dance.
Speaking of which I might try use DSs as my main weapon this go round, I normally use LSs but after three files of that I think a change might be fun and DSs are pretty similar to a LS with the whole 'no shield' thing whilst still being awesome looking.
Arrow rain is something you need to use with good timing, but also note that there are different types of rain which also play a role in what they do/how to time and use them.
Different types of rain? Does it depend on the type of coating you have?
In any case, it might be the thing to use after throwing a whole ton of Para Coated arrows at the monster. I'm already having a lot of fun combining the Sleep Coating with the Large Barrel Bomb the demo gives you. That and the fact that you can safely set off the bomb with an arrow.

Yeah, pulling off those shots when paralyzed or when the monster is wasting time roaring or goofing off or is stunned works pretty well.
