    Put the tapes in a cardboard box, and write "DO NOT WANT" on said box with a Sharpie.

    This is going to sound maybe too simple.

    But why not just throw them into a wood chipper?

    Nice, easy, simple - fast. If you can't get your own wood chipper you can rent your own for a few hours without much cost.

    Shredding and general lengthwise cutting of the tapes won't do much in the way of destroying the data? Just scan each strip and recombine the tracks.

    I suggest melting the tapes. Mold them into sculptures, post pictures.
