Super awesome looking 'Lost in Shadow' is due to release Jan 4th 2011!
This means that it'll die a horrible death at retail. This is too bad because the game is just beautiful.
This is not a game you try to save for Christmas 2. Ugh.
Well it was already a given that it wouldn't sell terribly well, considering the entire internet is going "huh huh I thought this was a Wiiware game because it's 2D."

I thought it was one. Yes, because it's 2D, and by that, I mean it looks like the games I buy on XBLA.

Fair point but seeing as he specifically said 'IGN/Gamespy', I assume he was talking about the press side of things.
It all depends on whether you're rendering a cutscene-ish view with a focus on faces, or a screen that could be potentially filled with projectiles and monsters at any moment. I'm pretty sure MGS2 used different models for gameplay and cutscenes (and I know that FFX and FFXII did). It's a common technique.
The Snake model in the MGS3DS tech demo was pulled straight out of Peace Walker, so I imagine the 3DS should be able to handle it.

I admit when first announced I assumed it was WiiWare too. To my surprise and happiness it turns out it's a retail release. I prefer my discs. :P
But yea, the niche style of the game pretty much means it'll sell poorly just like A Boy and his Blob, but then they decide to release it on Christmas 2, which means it'll be even a worse sales disaster.
On the Diablo 3 for console topic I totally could see it done.
If anyone has played Sacred 2 for 360 (protip: Don't) they try to do the same sort of thing while epically failing at it but it's easy to see where Blizzard would fix it up so it would work well.
The closest thing to Diablo I can think of having played on a console have been DeathSpank and Too Human. I'm pretty sure both had better controls than I remember Diablo having.
*clicklicklicklicklicklicklicklicklicklick*
I played Diablo II for the first time a couple of years ago and man the clicking drove me crazy.
Yeah, same here. I don't find clickclickclickclick on enemies to really be all that engaging. It makes me feel so separated from what's going on in the game.
Diablo II added a neat feature where if you hold down the button, you'll auto-attack the target.
Diablo 1 had that too
Diablo 1 had click and hold for movement. Combat was repeat clicking.
And yes I'm sure of this 'cause I played the game a year ago, still relatively fresh on the mind.

You're saying the story in Twisted Metal games is better than the story in Mortal Kombat? Please. We're talking trying to rationalize a homicidal clown with a flaming head. Better to just go with it than to psychoanalyze him.
And yep, boring gangs make it a GTA ripoff. GTA is more realistic than past Twisted Metals, ergo a more realistic Twisted Metal would be trying to glom onto that game's success rather than forge its own path. And even if it plays somewhat differently, it's a matter of tone. Companies think all the time that if they make game X look similar to best-selling game Y, it'll sell more.
I'm calling him a crappy manager if he didn't tell his employees to stop wasting company money by making doodles of real-world gangs and getting back to work on Twisted Metal, yes. The only reason seriously exploring a real-world take makes sense is if the bossman wants it. And the bossman apparently wanted it at one point.
That also doesn't make Jaffe any less a derivative asshole, as he's proven over and over in the past.
Yes, I am saying TM has a better story than MK. It's really not hard. Are you saying you can't have good stories with bizarre characters like a psychopathic clown with a flaming head? Cause I've read some amazing comics with far, far weirder characters.
Alright, so by your definition of a GTA ripoff that means Yakuza (a brawler with RPG elements) and Heavy Rain (an adventure game) are GTA ripoffs too then? Don't be a prick, last I heard Rockstar doesn't have a patent on having realistic gangs in their games.
Yes, he'd clearly be a crappy manager if he listens to his colleagues and employees. Instead he should tell them to shut the fuck up and do what he tells them to do. Like Kotick says, making games ain't meant to be fun son. Are you trying to be daft or do you think close-mindedness is an admirable trait? I'd hardly consider coming up with multiple concepts for rebooting the franchise before finally deciding on the best one, a horribly bad idea that clearly proves he's a crappy manager. An apparently crappy manager that's somehow made some fucking good games over his career by the way. What, do you think they spent 3 years working on those other concepts before scrapping it all and going with the current one?
Only one sentence in that entire article came close to justifying one of your snarky responses, you really had to stretch quite a bit to come up with your other criticisms. In other words, you're Jaffe's crazy ex-girlfriend.
So apparently I've received a number of beta invitations for Starcraft 2 but I haven't noticed because they've all been shuffled directly into my spam folder.
Not that it really matters because I'm not really interested in the game anyway.
On the Diablo 3 for console topic I totally could see it done.
If anyone has played Sacred 2 for 360 (protip: Don't) they try to do the same sort of thing while epically failing at it but it's easy to see where Blizzard would fix it up so it would work well.
Sacred 2 had opportunity, but it was ridiculously obtuse. 360 version was ugly as sin and ran really badly as well.
Website Electricpig asked Nintendo's marketing manager James Honeywell about the Nintendo 3DS pricing to which Honeywell replied:
"Price, we haven't made any kind of announcement at the moment, but for everyone who already knows, you know, the Nintendo DSi is available for around £129.99. The Nintendo DSi XL, with the larger screens, is around £159.99. So obviously, it's going to fit, kind of, somewhere within that kind of architecture."
I'm interpreting that as "these are the prices of our previous consoles. Maybe there's a corrolation between those consoles and their price, and perhaps that corrolation is true for the 3DS. You know. Maybe."
I think James Honeywell has no clue about what the pricing will be because that decision is not at his level, and he's about to get rapped on the knuckles by his bosses for publicly speculating about it.
On the Diablo 3 for console topic I totally could see it done.
If anyone has played Sacred 2 for 360 (protip: Don't) they try to do the same sort of thing while epically failing at it but it's easy to see where Blizzard would fix it up so it would work well.
I dunno, I think if Blizzard were to make a console game they should just go the whole way and make something tailored to the platform. Like a 3rd person shooter or something. Since Starcraft's so popular right now, that would be the logical choice. They'd have to base it around the Terrans since it has to be able to click with people who aren't familiar with the series. Plus the character would have to be special to justify their leading role in the setting, like maybe make them a Ghost or something, that'd be pretty cool.

Amen to that, I really really tried to like it (someone gave it to me as a cheap gift) but there was way too much back tracking and not enough teleportation to distances. I gave up when all my quests required me to run around that giant city on wild goose chases.
Plus it was really obtuse, yes. Despite popular opinion people like their things to be somewhat recognisable (ie: Traditional classes and races would've been nice).
Also, people posting about Nintendo making a loss is it their profits weren't as high as last quarter or they actually spent more than they made?

That's about the same section I gave up on. Basically running around, trying to find people to do side quests for, and the city was really huge, which would be nice in most cases, but I remember having trouble actually getting around it.
It tried to be humorous in a traditional fantasy world and it didn't work as well as, say, Deathspank.

They actually lost money. Mostly due to the exchange rate.
Considering they had to write 75 down and their loses are 25. It's entirly the exchange rate.
Or did I get something wrong?
I factor in the general slowdown of the Wii and the DS (esp. in Japan, where they desperately need those sales) as part of the cause, but in terms of straight finances, yeah, the exchange rate screwed them over.

Yakuza? If you can't see the GTA influences in that game you're nuts. Heavy Rain? ...the hell? That's classic film noir mixed with a touch of Saw (or at least it is so far, I actually just played the "crawling on broken glass" bit). Even if gangs do show up later, the game's hardly based on them.
...no, I'm not being closed-minded, I'm thinking like a project manager. Sure, you can have fun, but you don't want to screw around to the point that it interferes with the work. The realistic take on Twisted Metal was apparently explored deeply enough to imply that Jaffe directed at least a few people to work on it, otherwise he wouldn't have mentioned it. We're not talking about an artist doodling Sweet Tooth as a realistic biker on his coffee break, here. And no, you don't have to work on the concept for "three years" to explore the concept. Besides, the only way he would be a "crappy manager" is if he let his employees run willy nilly doing whatever the hell they want to without any direction. That's why I said he would be a "crappy manager" if the realistic take on Twisted Metal WASN'T something Jaffe wanted to explore, which I'm saying isn't the case. Do you even know what you're arguing about anymore? I mean, I do realize that criticizing a Sony employee activates your berserker rage, but yeesh.
And you're posting in the industry thread, for god's sake. You should know by now that an offhanded sentence by a developer or executive can often reveal a wealth of hidden information.
The company did ¥188,646 million in sales over the three month period, down from the ¥253,498 million of the same period last year. Operating income was down from ¥40,401 million to ¥23,342 million.
Operating income = profit. Their income is way down, but it's still in the positive column. Otherwise, it would be a loss, or they would say the operating income was NEGATIVE ¥23,342 million.
That's not too bad then, they're still sustaining themselves, just not as strongly.
I read it as 23,342 thousand at first and was a bit surprised, even in dollars that's crazy low in profits.
In the end they come out at about $266,387,068.43 profits which is a lot better than many companies.

You have to go to their investor page. They posted a huge foreign exhange loss. In the same time period since FY2007, their highest non-operating expenses was 3,840. This quarter it was 71,567 (70,594 was foreign exhange loss). Basically an aberration occurred in the weakest quarter of the year. Most of the time that would cause a loss unless they had huge profits like in 2007/8 (FY '08/'09).

Actually, I'm pretty sure that once you include account translation/transaction gains(losses) on conducting business, other incomes (like royalties) and other expenses (like restructuring), bank interest/expense, and income taxes, Nintendo comes out on a negative.
I'd double check if I could, but for some reason I can't access the financial reports right now. :x
Also, Kotaku posts that they suffered a net USD 290 million loss, but I don't really want to refer to that because... you know, Kotaku.
Well, I'll take the word of the Associated Press, who said:
Kyoto-based Nintendo Co. said Thursday it suffered a loss of 25.22 billion yen ($289.17 million) for the April-June period compared with a profit of 42.32 billion yen a year earlier -- the first in six quarters. Sales for the fiscal first quarter sank 25.6 percent to 188.65 billion yen ($2.16 billion).
So it's a loss. Then what the fuck were those numbers that Cous posted? Is Japan a little more lenient on wacky accounting or something? Blah.

Lost in Shadow deserves better than being sent to die.
Worse, because it doesn't have any nostalgic brand recognition, and is only pretty in that non-mass market way.
