Are some people here actually pissed about CE's? I haven't regreted buying a single one. I thought the AA set was pretty cool. Sure, I can't batarang someones face with it, but it still looks nice with the rest of my geeky stuff.

I think THQ's wording of 'premium multiplayer' might mean something more along the lines of Sony and EAs recent 'Here's a coupon for multiplayer, enter it and play all you want. Thanks for buying the game new' strategy. And if it is I have no problem at all with it, since I buy all my games new anyway - those developers deserve my money if I like their game enough to buy it.

The Project 10$ thing is probably the most inoffensive (or least offensive, if you're one of those people who hates paying for anything) way to monetize online multiplayer. I always buy new as well, so I'm not affected by it. But even if I were to buy used, as long as it wasn't from Gamestop (which used products can pretty much be $10 shy of the cost of new) I'd still be on board for the whole idea 'cause in the end I'd still be paying less than new.

As for Activision though, it is going to get retarded. Some exception or some sort of condition is going to be in place in whatever plan they could have to totally fuck the system over. That, or their method of monetizing is going to be selling those guns or whatever that will unbalance the game and you can only compete in multiplayer if you buy the guns too. So far, I think maintaining game balance with DLC is something the industry has been careful to have in place. But when I think, "Who is most willing to just totally fuck that over for a profit?" I think Activision.

Quick note; the other day I overheard a Gamestop employee telling someone about a game's DLC including beards for your character or whatever. What the hell was he talking about?

Yeah, I don't have a big issue with Project $10. What I do have a problem with from EA's recent marketing is their advertising their other games / pre-orders in games. From GiantBomb's Quick Look of Madden 2011, I saw that there were ads scrolling on the bottom telling people about the various pre-order bonuses for MMA 2011 (get fighter X if you pre-order at Gamestop! get fighter Y if your pre-order at Best Buy! etc). They also link to NFL.com's Fantasy Football league. It just all seems a bit over the top to me.

Isn't the point of almost all of these CE trinkets to just sit on a shelf next to the Mega Man plushies and replica GoW Lancers? There aren't supposed to be useful or anything. They are just geeky collectibles. That's why it's called a Collector's Edition. If you're not a collector of that kind of stuff, just get the regular version.

Mostly, it is also a way for them to justify selling extra for dlc codes that probably wouldn't get away with being sold stand-alone. (Gold guns etc.)

The thing that annoys most people about the CE trinkets is the general poor quality of the products especially when some are at RRP £100+ or the misconception of 'collectors/limited' when there are usually more copies of the CE/LE game on the shelves.

Hmmmmm, hopefully we find out about some of this data:

Publisher trade body ELSPA has announced plans to launch a UK download chart for PC games.

The association has formed a working group of members who sell PC games digitally, including Ubisoft, THQ, Sega, NCsoft, Mastertronic, Square Enix and three other “major publishers” due to be announced shortly.

All stakeholders have committed that sales data from third party resellers will be included, allaying fears that data from Steam will be missing from the chart.

ELSPA has partnered with long-term packaged goods charts specialist GfK Chart-Track “to do the heavy lifting”. Chart-Track has agreed to produce a closed beta chart which will be launched publicly once all parties involved are satisfied with the process of data collection and output.

While the growth of the social gaming market continues to garner headlines, a new report from Strategy Analytics suggests that the MMORPG segment remains “a steadily growing segment” and one that’s “not replaceable” for serious gamers.

The company's ‘The World of MMORPG: a Tale of Two Regions’ report predicts that the genre will generate $6 billion in 2010 and $8 billion in 2014, following 17 per cent annual growth to $5 billion in 2009.

Growth is expected to be primarily driven by the momentum of Asian online game companies like Shanda, Netease, Nexon and NCsoft.

I'm not sure why people keep saying that Social Gaming is going to replace other games as opposed to just adding to the games industry as a whole.

Would you ever buy a fake plastic helmet that wouldn't even fit on your head? Well people went apeshit for it because it was of Master Chief.
They didn't go gaga over it. The fake plastic helmet edition ended up costing less than the regular edition in many places.

    http://www.mcvuk.com/news/40386/5m-sales-goal-for-Fable-III
Development boss Peter Molyneux has high hopes for 360 edition of RPG sequel

UK developer Lionhead may be inundated with speculation regarding a certain boy-talking Kinect game, but Peter Molyneux reckons the third Fable game will generate the biggest buzz come October.

The development maestro has told MCV he expects Fable III to grow into the biggest selling game of the series so far, even topping 2008’s sales triumph.

And although Molyneux is famous for big promises and a spot of verbal ambiguity, the Microsoft Game Studio European creative director was clear on what he expects from the title come release on Friday, October 29th.

“We want more than five million people playing Fable III on the Xbox 360, full stop,” he told MCV.

The game’s sales projection echoes its design remit to be less intimidating for more casual audiences.

“Part of that plan is less clutter in the game, less aggravating little inventions that Peter Molyneux once thought was a good idea. More clarity, better story, better cast, better balance,” he said.

The game’s voice actors include John Cleese, Stephen Fry, Jonathan Ross and Shaun of the Dead writer and comedian Simon Pegg.

“Of course, we have to do all this still with fresh ideas and a new feel to the game.”

The original Fable game for Xbox sold about three million copies worldwide. The next in the series, Fable II, sold a little better with 3.5 million units.

Yet Molyneux’s prediction for Fable III is solely for the 360 version and doesn’t include sales picked up by the PC edition.

Microsoft announced Fable III for PC back in May, though last week explained the keyboard-and-mouse edition will be released at some point after its 360 cousin.

And while console owners will be getting their fix a little earlier, Molyneux recently confirmed the game has abandoned Kinect support.
Is he talking in third person?

    http://www.mcvuk.com/news/40392/More-COD-premium-multiplayer-claims
RUMOUR WATCH: Talk that game may carry an optional sub-£10 a month subscription for additional features

Mark this one down strictly as unsubstantiated rumour, but games site MaxConsole claims to have word from a “source” regarding the paid-for multiplayer components that Activision is expected to announce shortly for Call of Duty: Black Ops.

It claims that alongside the traditional multiplayer options – which will remain free – Activision will also offer an optional monthly subscription that will be priced £10 or less.

For the money players will get free access to DLC map packs, and that access will be granted before non-subscribers get the chance to play. Exclusive maps and equipment will also be offered, as well as early beta access to the next Call of Duty title. Apparently there’s also the chance of dedicated servers offering more players than normal.

Though all of this could well have been plucked from the air by MaxConsole, it does look to be roughly in line with what many believe Activision will offer.

Expect official details in a few weeks.

    http://kotaku.com/5610337/the-playstation-3-launches-in-incredibly-expensive-brazil

Nine months after the official launch of the PlayStation 2 in Brazil, Sony brings the high-definition magic of the PlayStation 3 to the South American country, with a launch price of roughly $1130, $500 less than originally planned.

Video games are expensive in Brazil. When the PlayStation 2 launched there last November, the asking price for the then nine-year-old system was around $461.

So it makes sense that the PlayStation 3 carry a higher price tag. Today the 120GB PlayStation 3 Slim goes on sale at Sony Style stores around the country for 1,999 Brazil Reais, which at current exchange rates equals approximately $1,130. Pretty steep, but it could have been worse.

According to Anderson Gracias, division manager of Sony PlayStation Brazil, the original price was to be 2,499 Brazil Reais, or $1,408. In order to stay competitive with the Xbox 360, which sells for $999 to $1,599 in the country, Sony is subsidizing part of the cost.

Brazil with get the PlayStation Network in three phases, beginning in 2011 with a Portuguese translation. Then Brazilian content will be added, and finally the service will be tweaked to work with the services available in the country.
I forgot about the insane taxes in Brazil.

I'm pretty sure DotT works fine under SCUMMVM, although I don't have a Win7 machine so I can't say 100% about that.

I think Tim Schafer has 2 polarizing games, Brütal Legend and Psychonauts, although Full Throttle was well received (except that it's really, really short).

Grim Fandango came out after Sierra had pretty much given up on adventure games. I think they still released Gabriel Knight 3 afterwards, which also didn't do well, and LucasArts only made that Monkey Island game that no one liked.

At a guess, I'd say that ~1997 was when FPS and RTS games hit their stride and started dominating the PC game market, pushing aside adventure games and later almost everything else.

I think Blizzard nailed the collector's edition with Starcraft II.

-In-game goodies that don't affect gameplay (portraits, decals, and a unit skin)
    -Art Book
    -Soundtrack
-DVD of the cinematics (including in-game ones) with commentary
    -Exclusive comic book
-Kick ass looking memory stick, made to look like SC universe dog tags. Made of die-cast metal, lights up, and comes with Starcraft I/Brood War.

Not a single thing on that list I wouldn't use or view at some point. And the box it comes in is pretty badass as well, without taking up a shit-ton of unnecessary room.

Sure. But if this is as close as they'll let us get to that, then, well, consider my money spent. I mean, I could deal with all the bullshit MW2 had: the ridiculous knife, various broken or overpowered items, etc... but the thing that finally got me to stop playing were the cheaters. Once I joined a game, and, without me having to do anything, I was level 70, 10th prestige, had all the emblems and titles... everything.

But again, if we're paying for dedicated servers that aren't managed by the players, are we really getting anything different than how it works today? Will servers have player admins that actually play on the servers and kick/ban troublemakers?

Again, I know, it's wild speculation.

Way to overreact. Anyways, I think (while perhaps poorly worded) there is certainly something to be said for not supporting developers that are trying to nickel and dime you at every turn. Just like there is something to be said for supporting developers that make games you want to encourage more of.

But I don't really get the whole WW2 FPS craze anyways, so I suppose I'm not qualified to post.

Tim Schafer isn't polarizing. Just one of his games.

Mania Mansion, Day of the Tentacle, and Grim Fandango are awesome.

Day of the Tentacle needs a re-release - I can't get it working on modern systems :\.

Why did Grim Fandango sell so badly anyway? Adventure games were still doing pretty well at the time weren't they?

You forgot the part where it tastes really nasty as well.

A perfect example of why I don't play many shooters, and don't use my headset when playing with randoms on live.

Way to overreact. Anyways, I think (while perhaps poorly worded) there is certainly something to be said for not supporting developers that are trying to nickel and dime you at every turn. Just like there is something to be said for supporting developers that make games you want to encourage more of.

Uh, excuse me, this is a Vietnam FPS game.

Or did you forget that green is the new brown?

Also, ten imaginary dollars says that "dedicated servers" doesn't mean "Activision-managed dedicated servers, maybe administrated by players" but "licensing fee paid for the privilege of hosting or playing on a dedicated server."

Assuming that's the actual plan and that this isn't entirely some guy's fever dream that he decided to put on some internet news site.

If paying 10 bucks for something I want makes me retarded, then, well, I guess every time I enjoy a delicious Chipotle burrito, I'm a retard!

Sorry, I'm not calling you personally retarded.

I'm just saying it's silly to want to pay for something that used to be free, and still is free in most cases. It's like making your own delicious burrito, and also paying for it. At the very least it's not a wise use of your money.

Shows how little I know about FPS games. They should probably just go full on MMOFPS at this point. It seems to be what they want (a steady stream of revenue) anyways, based on what I've read in this thread alone.

It'll be next to useless without the major sites like steam, D2D, or gamersgate (which is supposedly more popular in europe?). Heck, they don't even have EA or Activision, which were also supposed to be really big in DD
