I have bitched about their decision to split up the campaigns in the past but color me a convert. If they can make the Protoss and Zerg ones this top notch and this long (how long it appears anyway) then I'll gladly pay full price for them.
Everything from the voice acting to the animations to well...everything, is just head and shoulders above what you typically see, particularly in an RTS. I don't know why I'm surprised really. I've loved Blizzard games since ever and have bought the CE of every one that has had one and have yet to be disappointed.
Anyway, a couple questions.
The colony missions, can you miss any? Is there any benefit to doing some over others first, for the upgrades, or if you get, say, the vehicles and then go back and do an "earlier" colony, will the enemies be altered according to what you have unlocked?
I just don't want to miss/skip anything.
Two, just how long is the campaign? I played a few hours and finished the really early section and one of the colony missions and judging from the achievement pane there's a ton more to go (hence my comment earlier about the length of the game) It really does seem like it's going to be as long as SC or BW (not combined, obviously) alone; is that about right?
it was about 20 or so hours for me on hard difficulty for me. you will have to do two playthroughs to play all the missions in the campaign but that is only because at some sections you have to choose between which missions to play through.
pretty much i dont think you'll miss anything and if you do, you'll understand why
So guys, what happens if you try to protect the colonists? I based my decision solely on the fact that I think the Protoss tech is better than the Zerg.
I'm a little confused on what to feel. I suppose I should have seen it coming; they spent a lot of time emphasizing how much Sarah meant to Jim. What the ending lacks, in my opinion, is Kerrigan getting some sort of punishment for the murder of countless billions human and protoss. I can subscribe to a theory that she wasn't culpable for her actions under the overmind. But what of the brood war, how much of her actions was her own and how much was the infestation. But, ultimately I'm a sucker for sappy endings. Knowing Blizzard this just means horrible soul-crushing things are in store for Raynor and crew.
Random question - anyone know if campaign progress is saved locally or to the bnet profile? I.e, if I get to a certain point in the campaign on my desktop and then load the game up on my laptop, will my profile remember where I am?
God damnit I have lost too many missions now because I go out of my away to get an achievement and end up losing because of it (I'm playing on Hard). Enough with that, it gets really boring playing the same mission more than once.
For Haven:
I went through both protect and purify just for kicks. In Purify you have to kill a bunch of Zerg outposts, while at the same time preventing colonies spread out across the map from being infected. I would say they are about the same difficulty.
so finding custom maps to play on sucks, harder to get into games than it was on WC3 and the ones i have played are rehashes of old WC3 maps.
sigh.

Is there any way that people can vaguely label their spoilers in terms of beginning/mid/endgame, so that it's not Russian roulette for me to click on them? like the infracted post above, which was thankfully early (a few missions in)... speaking of which, btw:
I did the rescue first, and then the artifact grab. Dunno what would have happened if those choices were reversed, but I get the feeling that all these early missions are required.
Enjoying the campaign so far, but I think I have to get used to the idea that units are expendable - I tend to make a bunch of units and then charge into battle, during which time I've stopped unit production and freak out whenever units die.
Loving the in between cut scenes, the mission intros, everything. Though I will say, so far I'm not enjoying the SC2 campaign quite as much as I did the DoW2 campaign. Still having a good bit of fun though.
Edit: Have also had a couple crashes so far, which are frustrating.
So I got a buddy key from a friend, deciding I'll see how the game runs before I play it.
Then the client takes about eleven hours to download.
Then an hour and a half to install.
Then it needs to update.
Then it tells me it doesn't support my graphics card and I should try and update the driver.
Then the driver update takes an hour because Vista decides it should continually reinstall the on board driver and the one I'm trying to install fails time and time again (this part was my fault).
Then the game is down for updates.
God the fuck dammit, this does not bode well I just want to plaaay.

Here's a dumb question: with the custom maps, is it the case where people create a totally unbalanced map and then try to get you to play on it? Does that happen?
I had one instance last night where i was on a mission about half way through, got wiped out because i went a bit nuts and spread myself way too thin just as the ai launched a big scripted attack, loaded the game again and then whilst it loaded went off and had some food. When i came back the game was on the victory screen. My computer apparently got bored of waiting, took over, and did the mission for me. Slightly scared i'll get home later and find the game has been completed.

The campaign credits will be the last thing you see. You will hear your computer whir to life and a terrifying screech of metal scraping along metal. Then...darkness

Well... I'm sure people DO, because they are idiots...
but what would be the point?
Customs don't effect your win/loss/ record - or haven't in previous games, anyway.
how does one get into custom maps? I never tried but I didn't see an obvious UMS button when I took a cursory glance at MP.
is it true that arranged team matchmaking is fucked up?
so fuck the convoy mission, lost the last convoy and missed the achievement
and defending all the buildings would be kinda tough on that one
I find in the first few missions offense is suicide, but its absolutely essentially on the tosh mining lava surge mission. I only beat that after I wiped out all the zerg. Before figuring out you needed to be offensive on this map I HATED it. So annoying being constantly harassed by zerg while mining and running SCVs from lava.
thus far loving the fact that every mission has its own gimmick/special thing
OK I'm probably missing something really obvious, but is there a way to get the game to remember my BNet password? I deliberately generated something long and with lots of random stuff and I'm not inclined to actually try and memorise it.

Pick a shorter password and get an authenticator :^:
Although I guess that doesn't really solve your problem. Blizzard's not big on stored passwords in my experience.
And after their issues with WoW account security, I can't really blame them.
So I played through about 4 or 5 missions last night up to (not really a spoiler but to be safe anyways)
when you first get to the Hyperion
and I'm not really liking the campaign that much. It seems like typical SC 1 campaign structure.
Does it improve drastically, or is it pretty much the same from here on? I had the ending spoiled for me so I'm inclined to just play multiplayer instead but if it gets better, I'll soldier on.

In like, a year or two, you're gonna end up being locked out of your account and having to jump through hoops to get the password reset. :?
I've heard it said it gets better as it goes on, especially after the first third. Which bodes well for me as i loved it from the first mission. But i'm the kind of person who really enjoyed the tutorial missions in war3 ...
You are demanding a full refund or reship I hope? Because that's just unacceptable.

From that part on is where the missions get more and more diverse
Do people generally control their attack forces in one big preset group or do they break it down by unit/make squads? I found I have a tendency to just add more and more units to the same preset, and I'm not sure if that's a bad habit to get into.

I'm getting annoyed with the total b.net integration in everything.
Sure, it's fine for WoW to have password + authenticator. I've got five years worth of character investment there.
But password + authenticator every time I want to play a singleplayer mission? That feels like complete overkill. SC2 accounts are nowhere near as attractive to steal as a WoW account. But since they're the same account, you need the same security across the board.
Couldn't they at least give me a token after logging in that's valid for 24-48 hours or something so I don't have to log in and poke my authenticator every time I start the game?

It depends. Normally I group by type, Mutas are always 3, And then I have 1 and 2 as my main attack force, with 1 being something like Roaches and 2 being Hydras, if I know I'll need to micro around the roaches to take damage, or 1 being Speedlings/Ultras, and 2 being ranged.... it mostly depends on the situation for me.
I know some people just group everything into one group and just tab around for spells, which nicely gives you more keys for buildings and whatnot but still seems a little wonky to me.
I think I understand why they don't have plain medics in multiplayer for Terran. A medic/marine ball is amazingly good. It's cheap and there's nothing that can stand in it's way.

Yeah banelings don't show up for awhile, and even then they're kinda used the wrong way.
But I agree the M&M ball is intense especially once you get the medi pack thing from Swann

I usually break it up by what they can attack. I don't like having Marines and Marauders in the same control group, for instance. Marines can attack air, Marauders can't, so in a serious battle, I tend to want them shooting different things. It's just easier to focus fire micro if everything in a group can attack the same things.

Well the whole point of having a random password is so that it's secure, otherwise there's no point. But pretty much everything else is happy to remember my password for me.
Heck, there's hundreds of pounds worth of stuff on my Steam account, but it doesn't require that I put it in every time.
Ah well, guess I'll just have to memorise it then. That just seems exceedingly backwards for when I want to play singleplayer. Takes long enough to load in-between missions as it is, although maybe that just means I need more RAM.

And it even manages to have better security than battle.net by means of validating your email address and requiring you to click a link sent to your email to do stuff.

Yeah, if there's any change to the password then it first has to be verified from your submitted e-mail. Simple, and it works.
