heh well i'll be on in a bit, file checker/install is slow lol. I am super pumped.
Edit, Im on!
So im on a boat, is there a way to run this not in windowed mode.
There's a config program in the start menu, mess with it to change your settings. You can turn off Shadows, Dust Effects, and clothing physics in game though.
Im set now thanks!
I'm confused. I went out into the field and had a few fights. I hit some random buttons and now my character only walks unless my weapons are drawn. I also earned a skill called (I think) concussive hit for PUG but I cant seem to assign it.
I feel like a tool but the 'Manual' on the beta site leave a lot to be desired... only played for less then 1 hour but the game feels really solid minus some wierd lag with the mouse.
So far so good.
edit, crap... entered password in too many times incorrectly... now I have to wait several minutes (god knows how long that is)

This mornings patch fixed most of the UI lag. Synthing and dealing with the inventory are still a bear but everything else is now a relatively smooth process. As Smooth as I am inclined to believe they are willing to make it anwyay.
I still get UI lag if I'm scrolling through say inventory or vendor windows with the mouse. I need to find my controller and compare how it plays with that.
I played with my xbox pad last night and it was glorious. I really like the combat. Like... a lot. I really feel more engaged then in 11. I earned my first weapon skill and its nice.

I don't think I understand the guildleve system. I got the one from the story mission where you kill 3 rats but when I returned to the crystal there were no more to accept. do I need to get them back in town? Also I decided to explore last night and got to that costal town but I was on a cliff above it. I guess there is a tunnel or something to get down there.
The no zone think is pretty sweet. Feels like the world just goes on forever.

How did you set up your control scheme?
The descriptions in the button assignments were descriptive enough to someone that has played for a while, but to someone new it was all pretty cryptic.
I wasn't sure what to assign where and make it intuitive for actual play.

U set the left stick for movement and right for camera (clicking it was view change). The dpad I set for menu commands. Start brings up the menu. LB was emotes and RB is map. A is accept B is cancel and LT is auto run. I forget what I set Y, X and the RT.
Worked pretty well for a first stab at it.
I hope to be on for a little while tonight, maybe do some guildleves if I can figure out how they work. I'm trying to find a place to do some 'go fight stuff' quests for my pug.

Go back to the bar and visit the adventurer's guild and they'll give you some more guildleves. After that initial one the ones you get from the adventurer's guild have a 48 hour lockout, though. You're maxed at 8 guildleves, and the 48 hour lockout stops you from repeating the ones you have or picking up more until the lockout ends.
I found that doing the bearded rock camp ones all at 5 star difficulty is a breeze. The next camp, not so much. 2-3 stars is still doable, assuming invisible bogies don't chase you all across the zone shooting you with their lasers. (my guildleve bugged out =( Missed a perfect opportunity to announce loudly, "There's a bogy on my tail!")
I really hate guild leves. I hate that you have to go to the guild in limsa to get them. I hate that you then have to go to the camp where they are to activate them. I especially hate that you can only activate one at a time, porting back after each one. And of course who doesn't hate the 48 hour cooldown? It's so tedious.
My carpenter just got to level 10 last night, and I actually quite enjoy the crafting in this game.
Can you make me a shield?
I can if you're on this evening sure. I haven't really looked into making anything but bows because I don't know where to get all the blacksmithing parts for shields and whatnot.

So I've been using this beta as a way to decide what class I want to play at retail so I for once don't wind up rerolling 17 times in the first month, especially since none of the classes really call out to me right off. After playing Archer, Pugilist, Marauder and Thaum all to 16ish I still really have no idea which class to play.
I wish they'd release some info on advanced jobs if there are any so I can use that as a determining factor. Example, if Musketeer seems crazy awesome but it would be best to have the range attacks of the archer, or Fencer needs Gladiator sword skills to be optimal etc.....

The game actually forces you to try out other classes by decreasing the amount of XP and job points you accrue from higher level jobs until your others are up to snuff.
Or at least that's how I'm interpreting the "reserve XP" thing
I'm really leaning towards not buying this game at release now after playing beta here the last 2 days. There are just so many things on all fronts that are frustrating, assinine, backwards, or just plain retarded.
Apparently all caster spells healing and offensive under Rank10 at least are AOE only. Tiny range on both the AOE effect and the range period. The basic wand casting distance of the Thaumaturge is like 5 yards... and nothing like no auto-attack so you have to sit there spamming it as the only other spells you have take 3 secs to cast and are AOE that will piss off anything near it. And you can only cast maybe 20 spells before you're out of MP -- and guess what -- you can't med MP by sitting or such, you have to go all the way back to town to refill ... GG? None of the class descriptions tell you who the fuck the main healer is in the game either ... I presume it's the Conjuror since he has a spell called Cure that is a direct heal ... Thaumaturge only has an AOE regen one that hurts the caster to cast it...
And since the interface is so cludgy and slow, coupled with no root or stun spells for the caster, I sit there tanking the mob in cloth as it whips my ass.
Btw did I mentioned that vendors don't sell armor? The weapon vendor for changing jobs is hidden god knows where the fuck it is... And Phase3 managed to completely fuck over crafting success rates so you basically can't succeed at anything anymore even when using Rapid and waiting when it's unstable.
Party members also don't show up on your map or have an arrow pointing towards them on the minimap, so good luck finding them. And F-keys no longer select group members so good luck healing them etc...
The complete and utter fail right now is .... mindboggling.... for a company that merely updated FF11 to produce this game and plans to release it in a months time...
I am in game now, if anyone wants a linkshell invite. Standing at the end of the bar.
I'll be on later this evening. If I don't manage to catch you then another time perhaps!
My kingdom for some fire crystals. I hear that fireflies may drop them but I have had no such luck. I'll be on tonight and anyone willing to sell some fire crystals should they have them, would be much appreciated.

Is there anyone else out there who is still interested in this game but isn't in Beta? I'm beginning to associate this game with frustration and disappointment, and I haven't even played it yet.
Is there anyone else out there who is still interested in this game but isn't in Beta? I'm beginning to associate this game with frustration and disappointment, and I haven't even played it yet.
I am, for whatever it's worth. I've been signed up to the official for awhile but haven't had any luck. Same with the handful of german sites that popped up recently with give aways.
I also have a FP account they've been so sporadic in terms of how they've handled their give away that's it's laughable. No set time and an extremely limited amount of keys each day seems a bit crazy. But if I don't get in before release, meh.

Well I can tell you I am enjoying this game immensely. There are some frustrations to be sure. However I certainly do not agree with the overall sentiment that this game is somehow doomed to failure already. Most of the complaints seems to fall in the general category of "Expected the game to work like A, but game works like B" Aside from genuine bug complaints.
There are the complaints about the crafting being too difficult and how you fail every time. However this is not true. Early on you do most certainly fail. But as you gain rank the crafting becomes more forgiving and you have a much higher success rate on the crafting of lower rank items. I would assume this trend continues and you try to craft higher rank items at a lower rank skill.
There are complaints about the MP not regenerating. But it was known and advertised before beta ever began that MP would not regenerate outside combat and that people would have to ration their mp between aetheryte points. There are also abilities that regenerate MP points and alter the cost of abilities as well. On the Thaumaturge itself there is an ability that restores MP but is on a decent length cooldown.
There are complaints about the use interface design and the lag. The lag was supposedly addressed today (have not gone home to check yet) and the interface is clearly designed to be both compatible with Controllers and Keyboards (perhaps moreso on the controller aspect which might account for some of the ire).
People complain about lack of keybinding, which is a valid complaint I believe, but hardly game breaking.
They complain about the guildleves and how they are on a 48 hour cooldown. But neglect to mention that that only applies to the battle leves and even in those you can still do the leves if others have not done them yet. essentially allowing you to do them indefinitely so long as other people still have them available.
There are complaints about how the game doesn't hold your hand and it is easy to get lost with no direction. However the game actually has a tutorial that I find most people ignore (at least among the friends I've played with) and that it is very clear what you should be doing storywise if you merely read your journal or actual read what the NPC's say when you speak with them.
The crafting I find incredibly entertaining, and gathering minigames are much more interesting that other games where you simply click point and collect material.
The world itself seems massive, well designed and is very beautiful. The story so far is interesting, and the cutscenes tell the story in an entertaining way. Having my character actually have expressions and emotional responses to what is going on is a nice change from the typical blank smile or grimaces from most other games. I would like to see more voice acting since the initial cutscene was that much more immersive because of it.
So in general there is a positive review for you. I've spent a ridiculous amount of time already just fishing and gathering, and happened to stumble across a second story quest which I am currently progressing through. I remain confident the game will be pretty damned amazing at release. And I can't wait to see the two other starting area and begin to explore the world properly.
Not everyone is so down about this game, and in fact a visit to other fansites and forums will give you quite a different picture than the general sentiments displayed here. (I would avoid the beta forums themselves though. it's a scary place )
Of course keep in mind this is all my opinion, and I am a fairly rabid Final Fantasy fan so it could be that a large portion of the "problems" just get glazed over for me. But as I stated I am enjoying myself qutie a bit so far.
