The controls are a deal breaker for me. They are just to cumbersome for an action RPG and ruin the game in my opinion. If I could switch to a more classic action RPG control scheme, I would like DSIII a lot. As it is, I don't think I can play an entire game like this. I'm glad Obsidian released a demo.

So my pessimism ages and pages ago regarding the PC controls and interface for this game actually came to fruition?
So my pessimism ages and pages ago regarding the PC controls and interface for this game actually came to fruition?
I'm pretty disappointed, then.
Interface works well. Its just the controls. They still worked well enough though after a short while and I've had played with worse control shemes before. PC Exclusive or not. Its just not really an optimal control sheme.
Probably a good comparison are old flight/space sims. (Though it doesn't get as worse) You play with the joystick because there is just too much controls over the entire keyboard/mouse.

As one of the staunchest Freespace 2 evangelist on these boards, you speak in a language I can understand.
I'll try to grab the demo later myself to see what's up.

Also the game has two control shemes. Use the WASD one. The mouse to walk/run one is even harder to get into and a little annoying (though I only tried it out shortly).
Some of the text for when they cut off certain areas is hilarious
"The area you are trying to enter is filled with lava, quicksand and undead mules. Try again in the retail version"
Not quicksand!?!

I enjoyed this well enough. Wasn't incredible or anything, but it was solid. I've always felt like Dungeon Siege was fairly average to begin with, so I wasn't expecting to be completely blown away. I'll probably pick it up once it drops in price a bit.
edit: Hrm. Tried plugging my trusty 360 pad in and it caused the game to load indefinitely without actually going anywhere. Reinstalling and keeping the keyboard/mouse controls as default allows me to just hop right in and play. Strange.
The game looks great and I started getting used to the control scheme by the end of the demo. It also felt really polished. Not one bug in the entire demo.
The one thing that kept getting on my nerves was the health system. Playing as the warrior character, I died a few times in the demo, mostly during the boss fight in the caves. I feel like I need a way to heal myself that isn't reliant on an enemy maybe dropping a green orb or being in combat with people and having my healing while hitting people spell active. Basically if I stay in combat when my health is low I'll die, but I also need to stay in combat to heal myself. Super frustrating.
Was anybody else bothered by Anaji's horrible voice acting? I know that they're going for some kind of ethereal reverb effect on her voice, but there wasn't a single line I could bear to listen to during the whole demo. The NPCs voice acting was a little better, but I'm not sure I could bear to listen to my own character for the whole game the way it is now.
With that said, I thought the controller functionality was pretty sweet.

In the beginning. After a while though I adjusted to it and began to "like" it.
Though, I can see how she gets really annoying. Lucas was way better. It was nice to hear Gann again.
Lucas's voice will always be Alucard from Hellsing to me, which is one reason I'll probably take him through the story. That and smashing assholes with a shield will never get boring.

I would like some money because these are artisanal nuggets of wisdom philistine.
This was pushed back to the 21st? That makes me so happy. I was pissed because I really wanted DS1 and DS2 but I didn't budget properly for them. And now I can afford it later in the month. OH FRABJOUS DAY!
The controls and the camera feel really awkward. I'm sure I could get used to them, but I'm not sure I'd want to. The cut scenes felt like they were getting in the way. The story isn't very interesting and I don't want to spend 5 minutes talking about some shit that could be explained in a 5 line text blurb.
I think I'll wait for a price drop. Found some d2 mods to keep me busy a while longer.
I love the controller support. Fuck clicking a mouse to hit bitches. I hate that shit in my hack n slash games. Dark Alliance showed me there is a better way~
So, yeah, buying the PC version now. Because this looks like it'll be awesome. Hopefully full mod support and this will be double golden.
Free copies of DS1 and DS2 are indeed just delicious icing on the cake.
I don't really think a demo is a good indication of how much a game is "worth" or how it will be in the end. Especially, if said demo portrays the first hour of the game. In a Obsidian game.
In a Obsidian game.
... In a Obsidian game.
Remember Telos Mining Station, Saudi Arabia, NWN2 Act 1?
C2B I know your whole gimmick is fawning over Obsidian, and I like them too, but if a demo isn't a reasonable indicator of quality what is?
I never said that? o_O
I said its not reasonable to judge the ENTIRE game by it or how it justifies a price point. Its an indicator of how much you like technical side (graphics, music, controls and so on), bits of content that were shown. In the end to give you a first impression.
Also its fine if you liked Telos and Saudia Arabia but they were in no way a representation of the best part of the games. So people who are unsure on that one or want to wait should at least consider reading reviews/player experiences to look if it gets better or worse.

So, based on the graphics, music, controls, game play mechanics, initial story line, dialogue system, combat system, and my first impression, I can't reasonably come up with a ballpark on what I'd be willing to pay?
Do I need to play the entire game to determine that? The demo was alright, but it felt very much like any other hack and slash with nothing that really grabbed me by the balls. I wouldn't pay $50 from what I saw. I don't need to see more content to qualify my statement.
A demo tells me, "This is the game. Do you want to see more of the same?" Not for that price, I don't.
So, after buying it, I'm now installing the Ultima 5 Lazarus mod for Dungeon Siege 1.
Which is, as I said, a total bonus to buying a game I'll probably enjoy long enough to hold me over til Torchlight 2. So hey. At 50$ for 3 games, I can't complain. DS1 and DS2 cost a decent amount anyway, so its more like getting a new game at a really cheap price.
I dont know if I'd buy it after the preorder bonus goes away though. It feels like a fun game, but Torchlight 2 is just around the corner. With the 3 games though? So bought'd.
Just played the demo and it felt like a budget game. $30 sounds about right. Too bad I already bought it impulsively for the DS1&2 deal... fuck. Whatever.
As others have said, the game is not covering any new territory. Very samey formula.
That said though, it is pretty fun. Technically, it looks great and runs really well on my 3 years old PC.
Control wise, wasn't really feeling the KBAM, but i felt it played really well with a controller. Not sure what the camera issues are that people are having though.
The demo was decent enough. The story wasn't much but then again, I've always had extremely low expectations for story when it comes to the Dungeon Siege series. If anything this seems like a definite improvement for the franchise.
What impressed me the most however, was how stable the game seemed to be. Given my long history of buying Obsidian's games, so far this seems like their most technically stable game to date. I'm curious to see if this will extend to the full version of the game as well.
The tutorial tells you absolutely jack before putting you in a fight against 4-5 enemies at once that kill you in 5-6 hits. I didn't even know how to switch to my 2h sword stance. Sure I can look up the keybindings but if we're going to go that route WHY HAVE A F'ING TUTORIAL AT ALL?
Then there's the loot mechanics. The game wanted me to loot a sword from the first rack. I go up to it and click it. Nope. Remembering the retarded way I opened the door I hold my mouse over it and hit E. Nope. Move my mouse to the EXACT point it wants on the item, then hit E. Ahh, now the sword dropped on the floor. Now it takes me 3-4 seconds to maneuver my guy DIRECTLY over the item where-upon I have to hit E to pick it up.
I've played DS1 and 2. They're loot whore games. I will not subject myself to that for an entire game.

Just to clear it up for people reading this:
You loot stuff on the PC by hitting E while standing in range of it. It is spammable. Doesn't matter where your mouse pointer is.

I'm sorry to hear that about the controls for you PC doods
There is. Thats actually the only really stupid part about the pc version. To switch between controller/keyboard you have to restart the game.
