6 hours of Dominion yesterday, glorious.

It just gets better the more I play, I highly recommend a 6/4 Prosperity/Base split in cards.

I picked up Prosperity yesterday; definitely an interesting and fun set. Are you planning to use the Platinum/Colony in all your games? (I'm thinking I will.)

    This review
(from the comments) of Prosperity seems accurate to me after my initial play.
As requested. I played 4 games of Prosperity at the Gathering with Dale and Andrea, so I certainly haven’t played the 50 that Eric did in his review, but our conclusions are the same. Here are my main reasons.

First is the numbers 6, 7, 9. Up to now in Dominion, those are almost always Gold, Gold, Province. In prosperity there are multiple good (often great) 6 and 7 cost actions. And for 9 you can now get Platinum, a 5 value Treasure. The change on those three price points is dramatic in opening up new decision making, and in changing the way that you think about money in your deck. Copper (and even Silver) become much more punitive when you are trying to not just get to 8, but to get beyond it.

Second is the Colony and the VP chips. My least favorite thing about 2-player Dominion is the race for the provinces. Knowing early on that the game will end because of Provence exhaustion, and knowing exactly who is ahead at any time, can become boring. With Prosperity, the Colony (11 cost, 10VP) changes that equation greatly. If you can get to 11, not only do you get a great VP card, but you increase the length of the game because there is another Province left to be bought. Similarly the VP chips offer a mechanism to increase your score without slowing your deck at all, which offers another way to deviate from a Province rush strategy.

Third, wicked powerful new 7-cost actions. The King’s Court, come on! 3x of an Action. The possibilities are endless. Forge, trash as many cards as you want to get exactly 1 card with the total cost. It’s almost a perfect superset of the chapel, and it allows you to step your deck up to more powerful cards as the game goes on. Expand, a Remodel where the new card costs 3 more. I had a turn in one game where I played King’s Court, Expand, and turned Gold, Gold, Province, into Platinum, Platinum, Colony. I lost, but cool.

Fourth, new Treasure based strategies. Earlier expansions have had lots of cards that combo off Action cards. Prosperity has those combos with Treasures. One fascinating game saw Andrea buy nothing but Treasure cards. This was mainly driven by the Bank (a Treasure card), which is worth 1 for each Treasure in play. In combination with Venture, a Treasure that has you play another Treasure, the Bank was often worth 5 or 6. She didn’t start buying VP cards until a couple of turns after everyone else, but then it was Colony, Colony, Colony, Colony. I’d never seen an effective action-less deck before.

So, in conclusion, unlike other expansions that have offered new mechanisms, and cool new actions, Prosperity feels like it offers a completely new, more complicated, game. With Colony and Platinum in play, long term planning is more rewarded than ever. With the Colony deck, it is more likely that the game ends through 3 decks being exhausted, which I, at least, always find a more interesting, and fun to manipulate, way of having the game end. With the new 6 and 7 cost actions, the continuum of useful price points is greatly extended. To put it another way, after playing Seaside the first couple of times I thought, “This is cool, I like the duration idea, I’ll get this” After my first plays of Alchemy I thought, “Disappointing. Not enough new cards, and too many of the mechanisms are slow (Philosopher’s Stone, Golem). Skip.” After Prosperity I though, “Okay, now I don’t want to play regular Dominion any more because this was just so much more fun.”

@Echo: Runebound is with Talisman for me; I might play it once a year or so.

Yeah, I'm leaning towards that. It was more fun than Talisman with all the gear and shopping, but still, five hours of doing the same things over and over.

And that was with some houserules to speed it up: you only lost half your gold rounded up if you died and not any items, and you only needed 2 experience to level up, not 4.

I can't even imagine playing it with 4 experience per level up.

Played 2 hours of Forbidden Island yesterday with 4 players. Had an absolute blast with the intensity towards the end game. I think we won about 50% of the games that we played. It's one of the few games that I actually enjoy losing to.

Also, finally got around to learning how to play Warhammer: Invasion. I'm really digging it. I wish that I would have bought it last year at Gen Con during pre-release.

My group had our first play of Agricola on Friday. Even though it was another player's game I had to read the rules as the owner didn't bother and his brother apparently sucks at reading them. Overall it seemed pretty fun, not as streamlined as Puerto Rico and will have to play a couple more times to decide whether I like the randomness or not. About half way through the game it seemed like we had almost nothing done but soon after that once we got more family members started pumping out stuff like crazy.

I do have a rules question for Agricola. I noticed that some of the major improvements for bread making limited the number of wheat you could convert. The other major improvements like fireplace which convert to food many different types of item don't have any numbers listed so are we right in assuming you can convert as many resources as you have to food?

Yeah, the reason there is a limit with converting grain to food is that it's baking, which is a special action you can only do with the sow/bake action, when buying an oven, or the other bake action that I forget exactly what it is.

Cooking animals or vegetables with a fireplace you can do whenever you want without an action, or also eating grain without baking it.

With a split of cards in favour of Prosperity we do. With the 4 player games at the weekend we ended up using this Kingdom card selection strategy.

Deal out the Base set cards to each player, then deal out the Prosperity cards to each player but also include a dummy pile. Each player takes it in turn to play a card from their hand, they have to play 1 Prosperity and 1 Base but they can choose which one the play first. After 2 rounds of that (i.e. there will be 8 cards played, 4 Base, 4 Prosperity) randomly select two Prosperity cards from the dummy pile to make up the set).

This led to a variety of interesting and challenging card mixes. One of which I took Loan/Bishop as my opener and managed to get my deck down to 8 cards at one point and really got it playing tight, alas I lost to my friend who went Hoards/Duchy/Bishop to win by 10 VPs as I kept getting my Bishop and remodel in the same hand.

BGG.con was seriously awesome. 7 Wonders was my favorite new game, and I'm totally preordering it and the funky sleeves. Civilization was cool, but I think I need another play to completely form an opinion.

Picked up a bunch of Secret Santa stuff from the flea market, as well as Cleopatra and Catan.

I was bummed that I kept missing out on Twilight Imperium, but The Battling Tops tourney and the game show made up for it.

7 wonders. Is it awesome? Lots of people on the review websites think so what do you guys think?

Thunderstone. I tried to buy this last month but accidentally bought the wrath of elements expansion (oops) So I have that as well. Is it good?

Cadwallon: City of Thieves. This on its face looks awesome. Haven't heard any personal experiences with it.

And finally Mansions of Madness. I really didn't like arkham horror. I wanted much more from my cthulhu style simulation. This game seems like it might be it. Has anyone played it. The gubber and the still photos I have seen make it look AWESOME. I really hope this is as good as castle ravenloft/betrayal at house on the hill.

Not a board game, but this might be of interest to you:

Neptune's Pride is a multiplayer online game that takes place over a few weeks. It is like a version of Diplomacy in space; it's a 4X game with very simplified infrastructure and slow, real-time travel so that the gameplay focuses on the planning and conversation. Here's what the escapist had to say about it:
What makes the game different, though, is that unlike most browser-based strategy games of this type it doesn't boast thousands of simultaneous players in the same game - the free games are set at 8 players. And that's also what makes the game so great, because at no point is any one player too powerful to completely disregard every other player.

Some can hope that their superior strategic abilities will win the day, but in reality the most devious bastard will usually be the victor. Alliances shift and change with the leaderboard, as there can be only one winner per game. Someone in first place will often find themselves facing a coalition of every other player in the game. Technological trades are tentative, because there's nothing stopping the other player from not holding up his end of the bargain - except the threat of your battleships. Why become embroiled in an unnecessary war, especially when you've just convinced another player to help you in a war against your larger foe?

Here's the PA thread for it; I just won my first two games (you can play in two Free games at a time). In one, 3 "opponents" went inactive immediately (AI controlled players will just spend all their money on infrastructure each day, but not take any new stars), and a fourth (the one blocking my access to the rest of the galaxy) went inactive after just a few days. Yellow started in the center of the galaxy and had free reign to expand into what should have been the territory of several other players. So dark red and I worked together to break purple, allowing me to access the rest of the galaxy, and then turned our sights on yellow to stop his exponential growth. Sadly, my ally stopped playing at that point, but he had worked (and traded tech) with me long enough to allow me to get onto even footing with yellow, and I was able to maintain that momentum to take a close win in the end (the game ends as soon as one player controls half the stars in the galaxy).

The much more satisfying game was the one where 4 of the 8 slots were taken by PAers. In this one, only one player went inactive early, and even he showed at least some signs of life, exchanging messages and expanding from his starting worlds. Here, I found myself with four neighbors, trying to negotiate a safe expansion and keep from getting ganged up on. Meanwhile, the two PA players I knew of (Darkewolfe and ThatOtherHorseman) joined me in a strong alliance that should see us all to the top three, to then duke it out for final positioning. Our tech trading made us all early powers to be reckoned with, but the other players seemed not to realize it. Dw was taking an early planet lead, but lagging in industry and science. He started battling purple, tucked away in the SW corner, and skirmished a bit with dark blue, who resided between Dw and myself. Around that time, we realized that dark blue was actually another PAer (AustinP007). Quick change in plans, and Austin and I worked together to wipe out the mostly inactive yellow, then turned our attention to the galactic west. At the urging of red, I attacked green in the NW, while Austin and TOH handled red. Around that time, Dw suddenly went inactive, so Austin turned his attention back to the east to gobble up those stars while we finished off red and green. With all of Dw's built-up stars, Austin was becoming a threat to quickly take over the game, so TOH and I made plans to both swing our forces that way and cut him back down to size. I managed to catch Austin with his fleets out of position and broke most of his industry; for some reason, instead of fighting back directly, he decided to focus his efforts on wiping out purple to rebuild from the southeast corner. That backfired when I was able to take the lion's share of his planets and end the game. Still, for the last week I've been watching TOH's fleets nervously, wondering if he was going to attack me and go for the win himself. This page shows the balance of power over the last week of the game.

    npg1late.jpg

So, if this sounds interesting to you, pop over to the PA thread and let's set up a game.

I've started that Neptune game three times , but always end up losing interest/getting distracted. In two of the games I got second place though, from what I managed to do before giving up.

It's probably a lot more interesting with actual diplomacy, which I've only seen to a small degree in one of my games. But probably also much more time-consuming? Sending messages back and forth, timing fleet attacks with your allies etc.

Well, since you cannot actually join in an attack on a single star (outside of formal alliances, available in the Premium mode games), it's more that you need coordination so you don't hit the same stars and leave a good travel path through shared space.

But diplomacy is definitely what makes the game interesting, which is why I'd love to get a game started with a majority of the slots filled by forumers.

Let me put it this way. During BGG.CON some people said the table was full every single time they went to the 7 wonders table. And that's 7 players each time with 7 players rotating out each time at a 1000 person convention. That said, people would also go back for repeat plays because it's that fun. There was also a prototype copy available sometimes and at least another group brought their own copy as well.

However, it IS a light civ drafting game. 30 minutes 7 players.

I don't think people at the convention were that interested in winning, since a lot were people playing for their first time. Low level strategy that anyone can do is not giving your neighbors science or military cards if you're going science/military cards, or not building resources your neighbor needs for their wonders. Or giving them cards they've already built as you can't build duplicates. But theoretically, if you're really competitive, you'd memorize all the cards that have been given to you, and looked at what everyone has built, and after a few hands, should be able to deduce all the cards remaining that might still come to you, and then based on that, figure out what you should build based on what else your neighbors have built and might still be capable of building.

If nothing else, it is an awesome gateway filler game.

The one game of Neptune's Pride I played was really fun- up to the point where one player who was tied for second place decided to send all of his ships to kill the other tied-for-second, leaving everyone of of his planets naked for the player in first, who just happened to have fleets on the way.

I don't know if it was one person with multiple accounts, or the guy was crazy, or what, but that pretty much ruined it for me. I might try again with PAers.

I've gone to the FLGS 3 times this week and just stared at Thunderstone, Arkham Horror, and Lord of the Rings unable to decide which to get. Argh!!!!

Which LotR games? The Knizia co-op? I'd highly recommend either AH or Thunderstone over that.

Agreed. The co-op game is fun but a little simple and there are much better co-ops out there now. I'd probably also skip Arkham until there are some solid reports on Mansions of Madness. I also really like thunderstone.
