720p vs 1080p vs screen size

So i finally came up with some cash and figured it was time to pick up a hdtv. Only problem is I am dealing with about $1,100 and find myself between two hdtvs.

The Westinghouse LVM-37W3 37, which is 1080p

or

The Samsung LN-S4041D 40, which is 720p but has three extra inches for about the same.

So any ideas on which i should lean towards? I'm mostly going to use the tv for watching movies and gaming and am not quite sure if 1080 is worth grabbing a smaller set.

I'm going to say that you won't really appreciate 1080p at that screen size unless you sit very close to the screen.

Higher resolution becomes necessary if the screen is going to fill a lot of your visual field. Diagonal size alone can't tell you that; you also need to know how far away you'll be sitting. That said, 40" doesn't need to be 1080p unless you sit very close--far closer than people usually do.

So you can probably go ahead and get a 720p TV that's bigger. But if you decided on a Samsung, see if you can track down an LN-S4051D or LN-S4092D that's still within your budget. Both of them have better contrast ratio and response time than the model you mentioned, plus better color adjustment.

Neither are very big as far as flat screen TVs go, but between the two I'd get the 1080p screen because it's far higher resolution for about the same size TV.

What will be your primary use for the TV? will it be SD/HD cable, SD/HD gaming, HTPC (Media Center), or a combination thereof?

I am asking because the 37" westinghouse will be my display because my classmate has one, and it is a great monitor. We both use Media Center and displaying at 1080p = awesome computer monitor. Furthermore, PS3 and XB360 gaming are apparently great on the 1080p sets. That last part is mainly from avsforum, whose users also love the westy.

    my two cents

Martin Luther King Jr. was born in Atlanta. However, not even one hundred clones of the celebrated civil rights leader could remove Georgia's reputation as the birthplace of Joseph Stalin.
