Gen Con is coming up on 8/5 and lasting through that Sunday. I've never been and I was thinking about going but it all seems a little overwhelming.
Has anyone gone before/planning on going this year? Are there things that should be checked out for sure or avoided like the plague? How does the gaming sessions work? Can you just walk up and play or is preregistration a must?

Depends on the gaming session. Registering for events is usually a plus, since you get priority over any schmuck who shows up with just generics. Depends on the event, though.
