Blizzard, The Burning Crusade and the future…

North American and EU numbers are out for first day sales of TBC and it’s a whopping 2.4 million copies sold (This does not include any of the Asian markets) Needless to say the developers and owners of Blizzard and Vivendi are sitting back and lighting cigars with hundred dollar bills (You can read more about this here.)

There is also rumor on the horizon that the next release by Blizzard will be another MMO format game, some of the hints are that it might be based in the Diablo or Starcraft universe (leaning more towards Starcraft). Blizzard VP of Development dropped some verbal hints at the EU launch party:

“We’d like to say to our fans of Diablo and Starcraft that we haven’t forgotten we have these franchises,” he said. “We cannot wait to be here in a few years, or however long it will be. It won’t be a decade, and we’ll be celebrating the launch of [the next] Starcraft together.” — Source: Gamespot

A Starcraft MMO offers some interesting possibilities and would change the setting to a more sci-fi oriented universe instead of rolling out another fantasy based MMO with Diablo, though it wouldn’t put it past them to eventually offer both.

There's 0 point in a Diablo MMO save for the different lore - I think releasing Diablo 3 with battlenet to support the online component and ladder matches makes the most sense. For Starcraft, however, an MMO would probably shatter the world as we know it - the one thing that would probably pull subscribers from WoW (and let's face it, no matter what they do they're going to cannabalize their own base, but when their base is so damn huge to begin with, who cares?) would be the same functionality in fucking SPACE.

Whatever, I'll buy them both. I'll buy them all. Blizzard owns my soul.

This reads almost exactly like something I read on WoWvault yesterday. But nonetheless I like the idea of a Starcraft MMO if done correctly, not a WoW clone and please no World of Starcraft names. Starcraft could have 3 easy races but I hope they would look into more and I would like a 3 faction system as well and since the Zerg might be hard to be player controlled make them what the scourge are to WoW and have a Rebellion, Human and Protoss based faction. The rebellion faction would have pieces from the other side but be loyal to neither while the other two would have some other races to make it more then just those. Classes could range from Marine(hunter) to Zealot(rogue) with similarities between the factions. The biggest problem here is balance since technology on both sides is vastly different.

Starcraft MMO = WoW + Counterstrike.
No matter how cool the idea is, the player base will tear it to shreds and make it look like utter shut. That and if possible 95% of players would be Dark Templar and the other 80% would be Ghost. Yes, they would defy logic.

Not to mention the combat mechanics they'd need to have in place.

Nothing sucks more than MMOs like Anarchy Online that add these cool-sounding guns, but then give them a 30-foot range and give them all the hitting power of throwing a rusty spoon.

A Starcraft MMO ought to be a 3rd person shooter, now that I think about it; something like MMO Mercenaries with Star Craft lore/races/etc.

First of all, a Diablo MMO is out of the question for some time. Half the stuff in WoW was inspired by Diablo anyway. If they do that it'll be when WoW is on its way out and they want a new fantasy MMO. I think it's equally unlikely that we'll see a World of Starcraft while WoW is still in its hayday - Blizzard doesn't need to be cannabalizing its sales. I'm sure the next Starcraft game will be an RTS sequel. They can't just forget the genre that made them who they are. Starcraft 2 is a license to print money.

I think we should wait and see how Tabula Rasa plays out before saying whether shooter MMO's can work.

There's always been speculation about "what if's" and such, but never a confirmation or an inkling of a hint from Blizzard about the next jump they're gonna make.

Plus the news was also about the 2+ million copies sold on Day #1.

I don't know about you guys but the sheer number of drooling retards I stumbled across playing WoW has really turned me off to the idea of Blizzard MMOs. That plus their rampant mismanagement has guaranteed I'll never buy another Blizzard game again, and that's a shame, since I was a loyal customer of theirs for 10 years, starting in the old Warcraft: Orcs and Humans days.

They should stick to single player games with Battle.net support, MMOs are not their forte.

I wish I could remember where I read this, but I thought I had read that it was infact Vivendi pushing for a second MMO based on a different Blizzard franchise. Though Blizzard was actually against this idea.
Anyone else remember seeing anything like this?

I don't see how that wording necessarily means MMO. Assuming it is though, I can only hope and pray that they don't try to fit Starcraft into the same model as WoW. The last thing I want is to raid the Overmind for a 1% chance of getting "Raynor's Epic Rifle".

Yeah right. They'll continue playing the old game after spending months in forums protesting all the changes Blizzard made to the game, claiming it is horribly unbalanced and too "noob friendly".

Also, they had to upgrade their 200 megahertz PC to play it.

Yes. Blizzard will make more games. Very insightful.

I mean, really, what is the point here? That they have properties that will receive sequels? That single player content is probably pretty much dead from Blizzard as MMOs are making them so much more money? That Blizzard likes money?

    Huh.

Then maybe I'm not thinking of a Starcraft MMO in the right light. Maybe I'm thinking of it as a strategy game, with a different person playing a different unit.

And maybe I need to start thinking of something a lot cooler.

A Starcraft MMO ought to be PvP oriented. This makes perfect sense to me - WoW for the PvE nuts, and StarCraft for the PvP nuts.

Don't be retarded. Just because there is world PvP on any one WoW server does not make WoW a PvP game. EVE Online is a PvP game. Shadowbane was a PvP game. DAoC (and now WAR?) is a PvP game.

WoW is a pretty loots game. That's great - but a PvP game it is not.

I was merely refuting your assertion that WoW is for "PvE nuts", because it's a completely bullshit thing to say. I wasn't trying to rank it amongst other games.

If it's for "PvE nuts", then why does half the subscribing population play on a PvP server?

Sorry, just because there are PvP elements in WoW does not make it a PvP game. At the end of the day, WoW is about getting the shiniest loots off the ugliest dragon.

People who enjoy PvP might be drawn to other PvP games if they were of the same quality and polish - a spot that a game like, say, a StarCraft MMO would fulfill.
