Oh, hello. I didn't see you there. Perhaps I could interest you in a game of Firearms: Source?

Installation
Go here:
downloadbanner.png

Then, download and install 1.0. That's the base release. Then download and install 1.0c. Follow that up by downloading and installing 1.0d, which is the most recent patch. Installing in that exact order will get you up to speed, just follow the letters and the numbers of the releases to their logical conclusion.

Firearms: Source also requires Source SDK 2007 to provide some artwork and functionality. Downloading Firearms: Source and trying to run it should automatically start the download for the Source SDK in Steam, so you should be set on that front.


What is Firearms: Source?
Firearms: Source is a modification for Half-Life 2 and the sequel to Firearms, a lesser-known but much beloved mod for Half-Life 1.

Stolen shamelessly from the website: Firearms: Source is a fast-paced, quasi-realistic, action-oriented, warfare-centric modification for Valve's Source engine. FAS doesn't keep you waiting around to respawn or running forever to get into the action; our whole focus is on keeping you in the midst of the most brutal and violent firefights you've ever seen in Half-Life 2, period.


Hrmm. Sounds realistic. How often do you hear the phrase "Oscar Mike" in it?
It's not very realistic, and you don't hear that goddamn phrase at all! It plays kind of like Quake with real-life guns. It's fast and it's frantic and it's brutal. Leave your Oscar Mike, Tango Down, No Russian, Whiskey Hotel, Sitrep-calling, mission-planning B.S. at the door, son!


The old Firearms had tons of guns. How many does this one have?

How else can I configure my character's loadout?
I'm glad you asked! Firearms: Source has upgraded the old Firearms skill system. Every 10 points you earn (from kills, assists, or completing objectives) will allow you to upgrade one of the following categories:
  • Marksmanship: Lowers recoil and increases accuracy.
  • Gunnery: Speeds up reloads and weapon handling.
  • Field Medic: Allows you to restore health to yourself and your teammates.
  • Reconnaissance: Move faster and quieter.
  • Artillery: Rain death from above!
  • Leadership: Give buffs to your fellow teammates, like speed increases and damage reduction.

What kind of gameplay types are there?
Three at the moment, with a fourth planned. Currently, there is:
  • Push: Capture points in a linear fashion and drive the enemy back into their base.
  • Territorial Control: Capture points in a non-linear fashion and hold onto them, King of the Hill style.
  • Search and Destroy: See those boxes back there? Blow them up. Don't let them blow up yours. Got it? Good.
Capture the Intelligence will soon follow.

    hey AlejandroDaJ, is it currently planned to have things like sights/silencers/etc added on to the weapons? I seem to remember in old firearms being able to use a silenced SMG and be extra stealthy. . .


    also with the 150% melee damage is it possible to 1hit with the knife, machete or bayonet?

    Yup, sights, silencers, under-barrel grenade launchers, and other goodies are planned in release candidate 1.1. Some weapons already have native attachments, like how the AK-47 has a bayonet and the MGs/sniper rifles have bipods that can be deployed for accuracy bonuses.

    And yeah, I think the machete becomes a one-hit with the melee damage bonus. Not sure about the knife, though.

    Loved this mod since 2.5, had lots of my early gaming days with TAC and others through to 3.0.

    The 1.0c and d updates really improved the quality over the 1.0 and it feels really solid. Still some balancing issues needed here and there and a few more guns would be nice, but overall takes me way back and is still awesome!

    nevermind got that fixed.

    also needs to fix shutting the game down with F10. it doesn't actually close gracefully, it just zombies and then I have to kill the process.

    Good to hear Firearms: Source is living up to it's GoldSrc predecessor. It was one of those mods that made that era the golden age of modding.
