The Return of Beavis and Butthead: Traveling Dingleberries Within, Bungholes

Beavis and Butt-head are coming back to MTV.

The New York Post's Michael Starr reports that "Beavis and Butt-head" episodes are "in the works."

The show, which was a hallmark of '90s slacker culture, was canceled in 1997.

"The new series would keep Beavis and Butt-head in their perpetual high-school state, but it would be updated so that the pals -- who obsessively watch music videos on a battered TV set -- could lob their snarky comments at more current targets like Lady Gaga," the Post reports. "The show's minimalist animated style is also expected to remain intact."

Apparently MTV realizes they need more than reality garbage;

The move would both fit into MTV's broader strategy of returning to scripted fare and, as Starr notes, give the network a "back door" into playing music videos again.

Last month, the Wall Street Journal's Sam Schechner reported on MTV's move towards scripted programming, including "The Hard Times of RJ Berger" and "Warren the Ape."

From WSJ:

The new shows are part of a shift in resources to broaden MTV's programming slate beyond the heavy-reality TV fare for which it has become known in the last decade. About 18% of the approximately 50 potential shows MTV plans to test internally this year will be scripted or animated, up from just a handful a few years ago, the network says. MTV executives say they hope to greenlight two to four new scripted shows a year....

"The idea is that we should diversify our programming," Philippe Dauman, Viacom's chief executive, said in an interview. "If you limit yourself to one type of show, you're playing with one hand behind your back."

What think you D&D, is this a pathetic waste of time, a wise move by MTV, or a sign of the coming Apocalypse.

I have to admit, I was a huge fan and own all the DVDs. So naturally I'm quite thrilled. But should they be brought back like so many of yester years nostalgia fueled cartoons. Or should this, and those past animated goodies of old, be left in the past?

I can't see how the show would work well, now.

    Though I could be surprised.

Beavis and Butthead was great back in the day.

But I doubt it'll be the same.

Better to leave it in the past.

I'm torn, honestly. I don't know if they should be resurrected, but I do know I really want them to rip Ga Ga to shreds. But can Mike Judge really make it better than it (seemingly with rose tinted galsses) was, or is he just collecting a paycheck.

I guess I'll find out.

Beavis and Butthead do America was much better than it had any right to be, and Mike Judge has only gotten better in the years since, so this could be decent.

Beavis and Butthead wouldn't rip on Lady Gaga. They'd get annoyed and change the channel. This happened several times when shitty videos came on while they were watching TV.

They had a lot of fun with the "push the little daisies" video. I can only imagine they would have just as much fun with bad romance. I swear she is saying bromance, and no doubt they will hear the same.

I also like that they see this as a chance to backdoor music videos onto MTV again.

The main reason I'm excited for this is that, according to Mike Judge, they will once again do commentary on music videos.

Not only do today's music videos need Beavis and Butthead to point out their stupidity now more than ever, but they were ALWAYS the best part of the show. Remember when Beavis decided to randomly imitate Andy Rooney? Or when he couldn't stop singing the baseline of that MC 900 Ft. Jesus song? Yeah. Screw the other stuff, I'd gladly watch half an hour of that.

Nah. They dumped the series onto DVD finally and washed their hands of it. MTV hates when their antithesis gets popular.

No, I mean is she coming back in Beavis & Butthead? She was pretty much the only person on the show who understood them.

The following is not official, just Mike Judge rambling about a possible sequel. And perhaps a taste of things that may come:

Was it a good feeling going back to that? I know at Comic Con when you mentioned revisiting Beavis and Butthead, everybody was talking about it.
I don't ever want to close the door on that, but it seems like a couple of times when I've done interviews and say I've thought about, I go on the internet and see a headline that says I'm starting on the sequel. If I did do another movie, I wouldn't think of it as a sequel, it's just another. I don't think of the Cheech and Chong movies as sequels. If they didn't take so long-- it would take at least two years, and I haven't had two years to spare in a while. It is fun to do again. I worry that as I get older my voice is going to change, so I don't sound the same. But it was fun doing this one.

Occasionally I'll get an idea. A while back, I was thinking, God it would be so fun to just have them working tech support. They're the guys you get when you call. I started writing stuff down. The guy who I co-wrote the first draft of Idiocracy with, Etan Cohen, the whole time we were working on that script, we kept getting distracted thinking of Beavis and Butthead stuff. He was buying a new car, going through that process, and they started writing something about them wandering on a lot and trying to buy a Mercedes.

You feel like you still have it in you to write these guys, even though you've gotten older?
Yeah, I was still pushing 30 to begin with. I have no excuse. But yeah, I feel like they're always still there. I keep wanting to do something with them being like old, in their 60s, two dirty old men sitting on a couch. I've got various drawings of them old, two of which became their dads in the movie. Yeah, I've thought about that.

    I'd watch this.

Sneaking out of bed at midnight to stealth-watch B&B on MTV without the parents knowing was one of the greater highlights of my youth in the early-mid 90's.

In any case it sounds like it'll be better than when Spike tried to bring back Ren & Stimpy. Lord that was terrible.

I still remember the first time they said assmunch. It was such a big deal for some reason at the time. It was the episode where Beavis was floating over the shark tank, and they muffled it quite a bit.

    MTV

Doing something other than reality shows?

    I call hijinks

MTV has so many reality shows, that they had to start another MTV channel, that itself has so many reality channels.

MTV would not bring something good back into this mix.

They brought back Greg the Bunny. Well, kinda. It's Warren the Ape now. But it's actually good.

I'd say MTV is turning a corner, but Jersey Shore still exists. Ah well, it's an improvement.

Thats pretty much the point, they realize they have to many reality shows. Beavis and Butthead should garner some media attention and let everyone know they're trying to correct that mistake.

I am surprised they haven't attempted to make more money off the license. I own some of the single release DVDs and the three box sets. But I guess Mike Judge still owns a lot of the rights on them seeing as how he got to choose what was released and what wasn't.

Huh, I thought someone was just yanking my chain about MTV not showing music videos anymore.

I can just as easily see B&B doing their thing with videogames. I'd prefer the old music video thing but I think it would be quite likley and appropriate for the duo.

And yes, the movie was amazing
