We did, actually, a bit. The MSPA art forumers are timid, like nervous sheep.

I get the feeling that a lot of them, and perhaps a lot of fanartists in general, are nervous about what they're doing. They primarily create art out of work other people have done because it's a comfort zone for them. If someone else has made the basics, it is a lot easier to add your own style to.

You say the original forum was sort of a wasteland, perhaps that is because it was made primarily for original artwork? The fanart thread is much more popular. One thing you might want to try to encourage is not just critique, but for people to try posting their own original art.

Fanart gets a different response than original art because it differs from the original piece. If it differs in an interesting and unique way that other fans like, that by itself is going to garner praise, possibly much moreso than if it were the same style but with something totally original.

Yeah, that was pretty much our thought process when we shifted the other art threads there. I expect it will be a gradual development, but we're already seeing a lot more non-MSPA traffic through there, so hopefully it will open up.

Very originally, it was a thriving art community, with quite a few people from PA and other places. When Andrew changed the forums to the official MSPA forums, a lot of the original artists left and the new ones who came were, as you said, nervous about posting stuff. So hopefully they'll start to branch out now if they see people posting non-fanart. I'll drag up my old thread, make Lexxy critique the crap out of me or something. Set a good example.

I used to do some critique back in college, but now-a-days it wouldn't be especially constructive. Not in the insulting fashion, but in that I can only look at something and go by what pops immediately into my head. It's all intuition with no grounding in any sort of actual technique. The only technical thing I can remember from college is negative space. Otherwise I'd try to help out.
