Am I the only person that gets tired of switching "costumes" or "characters" or even "emotions" in his 2D platforming games? I likes the New Super Mario Bros cause it didn't have that mechanism that seems to be present in this new Wario game, the new Yoshi Island game, and the Princess Peach game (respectively). Give me one charaters, sure he can get, and subsequentialy lose, power-ups, but dont make me got to a certain point in order to change something just to further the game. I loved Kirby Canvas curse, and as I mentioned before, New Super Mario bros, because both were great 2D games that didnt REQUIRE switching between shit to actually make it to the next part of the level.

Metroidvania isn't for you.
But in all honesty, you're better off rediscovering the roots of the newer (admittingly more addicting) platformers that you don't enjoy: Super MArio World, Yoshi's Island, Sonic, Kirby's Dreamland, Wario World, Castlevania 1,2,3, 4, Bloodlines, etc.
I, personally the new platformers. There's no such thing as too much Metroidvania.
Yes I love all the old classics as well, but I want something new. I can only play Super Mario World sooo many times (thats a lie) before it gets old. I want new/old platformers. I bought the first castlevania game for the GBA (don't remember the name anymore, manily cause I didnt like it) but that didnt stick in my mind as a great game like everyone told me it was going to be either.
Edit: Kirby All-Stars was one of the funnest games I've ever had the expirence to play. I also remember thinking great things about Mischeif Makers for N64 and thinking at the same time, "wow this is probably the last next-gen 2D platformer ever. Still need to finish playing thru Viewtiful Joe which I bought for $7 cause it seemed sweet enough for me.
is it bad that I noticed that you draw a dick for the torpedo?
Would that be as bad as the minigame where you drop piles of crap into a toilet?
In Japan, crap is as much a reccurring theme in Wario games as garlic is. They just remove 90% of it in localisation process. It sneaks through in a few WarioWare games.
I have high, high hopes for this game.
Hm, I didn't know that. Do you happen to remember what instances of crap were taken out of Wario games? I noticed that Smooth Moves has you waving some crap on a stick when you have to shoo away... things, so maybe they're loosening up.
The instance that sticks in the memory is from the first WarioWare on the GBA. A microgame involved three objects, either cherries or a turd, appearing at the top of the screen and you needing to line Wario up under the cherries. They changed the crap into diamonds causing you to avoid treasure for fruit! He's Wario, not Pacman!
Then in the same game they left the golden turd in the treasure chest at the end of Wario's boss level. Crazy.
Yeah I just sat down and looked at Famitsu. 29 out of 40.
They said, basically, that the touchscreen aspects of the game were fun, and that it's rewarding to use Wario's changing abilities for puzzles/tricks etc. They did say it was quite hard, and that the difficulty changed a lot between normal play and the boss battles. The bosses can be quite stressful, and the minigames leave something to be desired.
This, the two Castlevanias, Kirby Canvas, Elite Beat, New Super Mario Bros, the upcoming Pokemon game(s), Yoshi's Island DS, Phoenix Wright 1+2, Clubhouse Games, Big Brain Academy, Advance Wars DS, Mario Kart DS, Super Princess Peach, Meteos and Tetris DS, Hotel Dusk, Final Fantasy 3, Final Fantasy VI (GBA).. and to a lesser extent Metroid: Hunters (still on the fence).
Combine that fucking AAAAAAAAAAAA+++ list of games with a 1.25 hour busride EITHER WAY almost everyday and I can see myself getting my money's worth out of it.
Someone convince me to boycott this goddamn wallet wrecking idea. Please..
Oh God, temptations are rising..

Has anybody picked this up yet?
Is it good/bad? I have some extra $ and I want a new DS game. This looked fun, but I'm kinda trying to feel out what people think of the game.
I was going to buy it, but it got mediocre reviews (6.6 average now - http://www.gamerankings.com/htmlpages4/930505.asp ), and the segment on it in last weekend's 1UP Show made it look really crappy.

I told you it could go either way. And it went the wrong way. Pity.
If your game is obnoxious to play and you can't figure out why, check to see if someone accidentally tacked on some uncomfortable, impractical, stupid touch-screen controls to your game. It happens enough seemingly on its own to make that your number 1 troubleshooting step if you find your game starting to suck. In fact, it happens so often that any day now, Nintendo will release a dev kit update fixing a bug that automatically tacks on shitty touch-screen controls to all your games that have no business using them. I'm sure of it.
In short, it's ok to not use the touch screen as an input device, especially if you game controls with the buttons on the face 99% of the time. Yes it's there. Do not use it unless it makes sense.
It was outsourced to another, lesser known company, which is probably part of the reason the execution is meh. I mean, yeah, YI2 was pretty good and outsourced, but that was after that studio made Yoshi's Topsy Turvy. :S
Apparently this was developed by Tose (That team that has made literally thousands of games for different companies in Japan, they also did Super Princess Peach) instead of the normal Wario team. I guess thats why it didnt turn out so good.
Well since Tose is such a huge team its actually possible that the same guys that did SPP didnt do Wario. I agree that SPP was a decent platformer. Not as good as NSMB, but quite competent.
I liked SPP better than NSMB. I thought it had more original gameplay and overall I had more fun with it.
I'm really disappointed that this came ended up mediocre (according to reviewers at least). I was really hoping with the costume change mechanism that we were looking at a reincarnation of Kid Chameleon.

I hope it doesn't fade into obscurity because the first game didn't sell well.

A mixed review - I guess the 29 makes sense.

The original Warioland and the VB Warioland shall forever remain my favorites.
So am I to assume by everyones reactions that this is kind of the anti-Canvas Curse effect? Trying too hard for touch elements?

I'll still have to pick this up on the cheap at some point.
No purchase for me.
It LOOKS awesome, but the execution appears to be crap. Dammit.
Or when the price drops sufficiently.
