another obvious improvement is the environment. sure, hulk was a last gen game, but the leap in shiny graphics was big from P1 to P2. each block looked fairly identical in the first game, now each area feels unique with landmarks.

they also streamlined the side missions so they flow more coherently into the story and give you good rewards for doing them.

    Not all of them.

I'm completely useless at evading strike teams. :P

The only parts of these games that has truly evolved over time is the movement system. Prototype 2's has taken a step backwards in a couple of areas (walls and control layout being the main ones) but it is actually a pretty big leap forward in precision, control and overall speed. In my opinion they should have separated dodge on the ground from dash and left dash on the trigger. Dodge on the ground would still be a tap of jump. This control system was perfectly functional for dash, it was only clunky for dodge roll. In trying to "fix" it they made it quite clunky for trying to get better movement. Similar to if, say, trickster in dmc required you to lock on and press a direction before dash would work instead of just always working.

I think that Hulk had the best offensive combat mechanics in terms of variety and how it all fit together.
Prototype had the highest overall power level of the series (solely because of muscle mass).
Prototype 2 has the best defensive mechanics of the entire series and some really fun powers that make you feel like you are affecting the world around you (tendrils, the pack, biobomb).

Story, plot, they're all crap really.

I think prototype 1 and 2 are deceptively good. Sometimes it feels like a pretty typical brawler but then other times you run up a building, jump off and come crashing down in the street exactly where you intended to and the feeling of control is a step above most other games. Also its an open world game where you can actually choose how you approach each mission, which is pretty rare.

Quite a lot of choice is gone in prototype 2. You are locked into a lot of missions in this one. In prototype 1 you could do most of the "vehicle" missions on foot, even the one where you weren't supposed to risk an alert. You can't do that anymore because they lock you into the vehicle.

The last boss is the best example of a cutscene pretending to be gameplay that I've seen in quite a while.

I really love the world in this one though.

    Try this.
Go find a pack of people lurking around talking to each other in the green or yellow zone. Pick up something small, like a trashcan, small piece of wood, shopping cart. Walk around with it for a while.
Everybody notices you picked something up and they watch you warily, but they don't completely freak out. It's small enough that a crazy man could easily pick it up. They back out of your way and are cautious but not panicking.

    Now pick up a car.

This is the best part. Walk with that car around for a bit, find a group of people where one is facing away from you. Just walk and don't make a bunch of noise. The one's facing you will see you and freak out. The one facing away from you will be confused and will be making body language for "what the hell is up with you guys?". Then he will turn around and see you....

It's also really great to just walk around the world and hear four or five different conversations going on at once, people sleeping on couches, chillin on chairs, have a smoke.

This also happens in military bases. I walked around one and the military guys are having conversations. I walk up to a group of them and there's a drill sargeant laying into his squad. Really putting the fear of Sarge into them. I lurked behind him for a while and let him lay into them, then ate him in front of the squad and bounded away. :)

Each pedestrian has a different voice and manner of talking appropriate to their model as well.

Even the zombies! Hit a zombie, then shield up and just watch. After a while a second zombie will walk up and start eating the corpse. Then a little bit later you might get another zombie walk up and grab the corpse as well. Then they pull in opposite directions....
    Skriiiitch.

Last game standing still and just observing the world caused you to see the cracks. In this game it's really rewarding.

Oh yeah and the whitelight barrels in the bases. Break them and carry them around. It will turn pedestrians and military into zombies. They convulse, collapse to the ground and come back as zombies. So much stuff to just mess with in this one.

I've seen protestor groups rallying in front of blackwatch bases with a leader egging on the group.

Even just simple things like which disguise you have. If you have a blackwatch disguise on and you walk through a large crowd of civilians they stop what they are doing and watch you like a hawk, backing out of your way. You do not fuck with blackwatch. The guys on the sidelines out of the way will call out insults. After a while Heller even makes a comment about feeling sick wearing his blackwatch disguise.
Walk through the same crowd as Heller or a civilian they just ignore you.

i liked the last fight, but it did make alex seem extremely weak

i'm not too worried about having to use vehicles on the vehicle missions since they aren't awful like the first game. i died in tanks all the time in P1, but now they seem to take more of a beating (from enemies, not heller). most of the choice is still there, it's just usually more appealing to just try to murder everything in as grand a fashion as possible. i can't really think of an area that i didn't have fun tackling (i really enjoy doing the 'pop the blister' lairs, speeding around elbow dropping each one before they hatch).

Yeah green, for some reason in my mind I had them going in traffic light order

Unrelated, one of my favorite things from both games is doing the flip over a vehicle and grabbing it mid flip, so stylish

    OK, thanks guys.

Could you guys explain the hunter radar thing? I think I get it, but I am not sure. It feels like I am running around in circles when I use it. The return wave comes from the direction of the target, right?

  • SlortexSlortex In my chairRegistered User regular
The target is always in the center of the return wave. They're usually moving, so they might not be exactly where the last return wave showed them.

Beat the game last night. I honestly think this is far better than the first Prototype in a lot of ways. Very happy with it.

Yep, me too. Slowing things down a bit gave everything a greater sense of heft--you truly feel powerful in this one. Compared to the first, where I was twitchy and all the bad guys were made out of paper. Add to that the real sense of scale that the city possesses, and it just makes it all feel more satisfying in some significant way.

You can claw lunge from ground to sky and it wont use up your air claw lunge. Then you can jump on another one and cut its rotors off.

Claw is so fucking good. Works straight off a building too, don't have to jump off again. Sucks a bit when it misses but eh. Land and do it again or cancel and grab them. Woo! Scratching helicopters from the sky.

    Yeah, and the subsequent fight
The Koenig fight was awesome. I would slam him into a wall and run over to try it again, but before he'd have a chance I'd get kicked into a bus. The subsequent fight against the military dude was even better since it was more wide open, and I had an opportunity to throw more cars after being faceplanted into the same cars.

Prototype 2 introduces opponents that make you go from reveling into how unstoppably powerful you are to pulling your head out of a brick wall and realizing that other things are strong too. It's honestly something I'd like to see in more "super-powered" games.

Something I don't get in a lot of games is a real sense of power, because everything scales with you to maintain challenge. Prototype et al are awesome because you really feel like some sort of crazy juggernaut of destruction. The tough monsters and such in Prototype 1 were nice, but often felt like set-pieces rather than opponents.

So I saw that someone had posted saying the Collossal Mayhem DLC was available now for European PSN.

I tried it and it worked.

Its a set of toggleable cheats. You go into the rewards screen and you set them to on. You get a warning saying Trophies and Events will be disabled until you reload your save file.

Here's what you get in the way of cheats.

Boomstick - Really Big Rocket Launcher. Infinite Ammo. Everything dies. Toggle it on, it appears in your hands. Drop it and it disappears. You gotta retoggle it via the menu.

Anti Gravity Field - Anything Heller interacts with starts floating like it's in zero gravity. Although I have actually seen things Heller hasn't interacted with start floating, like two cars hit each other and then started floating around.

Vortex - Pick up an object, any object, throw it, make a whirlwind that sucks up a whole street. Pretty cool. Looks awesome. Does shit damage to armor but eh, you can combine it with biobomb and it will suck things into the vortex. :)

Air Time - Infinite Glide in a jump. Keep on pressing R2 and you hit the skybox. This is flight.

    Skins-

Zombie Heller - He actually growls instead of speaks anytime the normal Heller would talk. Pretty funny.
Test Subject Heller - Basically what he looks like at the start of the game before he gets told to put some clothes on.

    Fun stuff.

in the art book, there are DLC concepts for those two skins. there are also concepts for an armored version of heller, similar to mercer's armor in the first game. i hope they add that.

i don't read too much into story in these games, but honestly heller's motivations to kill blackwatch are much clearer than mercers. blackwatch fucks him over as much as mercer does, and uses
    his daughter
to blackmail him. add in that blackwatch are total bastards in this game, and heller seems totally justified in killing every last one of them.

in prototype 1, even though mercer saves NYC, he still killed a lot of people for pretty much no reason (as he was already dead and basically just a being of hate and virus material. unlike heller, he is cold and manipulative.

i can see what you meant, but i never felt the need to eat random people. honestly if you still live in NYC when this shit is happening you probably had a short life expectancy anyways. i never had to eat any civilians, probably did a few times by accident. but i usually consumed infected/military for health as it was killing two birds with one hammerfist.

I didn't really see him as a good guy. He clearly doesn't give a fuck about anyone, and is pretty psychotic where Alex was just a blank (evil) slate a lot of the time. The thing that makes me really like him as a character is that he is clearly having a lot of fun with his goopy murder powers.

He's just a good player surrogate for an ultraviolent sandbox game. Enjoys fucking around and killing dudes, good motivations for hating the badguys.
