I just had my first strategy epiphany. This is a fucking great feeling.

My friend plays terran, and he's gotten good at using ghosts to snipe my high templar whenever I make them.

I think I have just found the perfect use for Hallucination.

do it! show someone important the replay and call it the raiden build

Oh I wouldn't call it a build, just a tactic to keep high templar alive.

Calling it a build sort of implies that I plan my game around it, rather than going "He has a ghost academy, I should get hallucinate to counter snipe"

I more went for personal fame and glory than whether build was the most accurate term

    but fair point raiden

Yay! Finally over .500 overall. Third straight 1v1 over a platinum guy too (I'm in silver currently). Dude comes into my base and builds assimilators on both vespene geysers so I go pure barracks and kick his ass once I get some rauders. Normally I like teching to starports so I had to adjust.

EDIT: I am the worst infantry user. Next game, also protoss platinum dude, I forget to stim the marauders, they get horribly crushed.

Ah HA! After losing about 10 games to protoss who went mass cannons into void rays i have prevailed! I scout a forge and seem him wall off with 4 cannons (lol) I scan a bit later and spot 5 stargates (LOL). His bastard void rays arrive and make that sound that is about on the same level of annoyance as a yapping dog on my expo. My 10 marines stim up and swat them at which point he sends 3 more. I build up more and more marines each time eventually having 5 rax 1 fac 1 port on 2 base and never stopping the marine production and upgrades, getting 1 thor, a raven, and medivacs for support. During a lull i plop a PDD on his ramp, fight through a couple cannons to snipe the pylons powering them and procede to kill evey pylon in his base and then his nexus, after making about 12 new pylons around his base hoping to power his field of cannons he quits, no 'gl hf', no 'gg'

    ...ha!

To make matters better, I got my 25 win achievement on this ego-boosting match

Ugh, I'm having doubts about my midgame (anything after 10-15 minutes) play. Mostly because my games are overwhelmingly over in the 10-15 minute range. Which isn't to say this is a bad thing, since I can frequently win during this time. It's just...at the point where my initial combination hasn't killed the guy and I start to transition into higher tier units with an expansion up, I just lose any and all direction. I think this is part of the problem with my TvT play.

For instance, with TvZ I have a plan: I want reapers (LZ opening). If this for some reason doesn't work, I'll then get marauders or marines depending on what Zerg is doing, which is entirely planned for. If I still haven't killed the guy then I want after that marines/tanks/thors. Easy enough combination, simple to execute. For TvP I also have a plan: I want marine/ghost (Silver opening). Maybe toss in a few marauders. If this doesn't work (far more often than TvZ openings) then I want more of them, I want to expand during the initial push, and maybe I want some tanks (or even a Raven) but still a regular opening. It's not as concrete as my TvZ, but it's manageable.

I have no idea in TvT. I generally want marines/tanks/vikings since that's the accepted build but there are a million different ways TvT can go. I feel like I have no plan and it's harder to get a midgame plan going so I'm just flailing around. This happens somewhat in the other matchups too, it's hard to get a focus down where I'm not just flailing and putting up stuff 5 minutes after I should have anticipated it.

I suppose it doesn't help that I find it's hard to actually practice mid-late game since it takes you a hell of a long time to get there in the first place. There's also usually no set thing you're doing since it depends on game conditions.

I'm the opposite (granted: silver; but I seem to do OK against gold/plat) of Aegis it seems. If I manage to get an expansion up and running, I almost never lose. It's the early game that's tricky for me. I'm a builder at heart (grew up on civ) and have a hard time adopting a speedy military mindset.

EDIT: As for me, I tend to have a squad of detector hunting vikings with banshees slaughtering. Harder against terrans as they tend to also have viking swarms, but are less likely to build ravens so once they run out of OC energy their army goes poof.

Yea it's really not hard for me to look at a build order, spend some time practicing it and getting it down pat. The timing for the beginning I find is really easy to establish since it happens right away and all you're really looking at are initial building and unit construction, making sure you don't stop making workers, making sure everything isn't hanging and getting your initial scouting down.

It also depends on how effective the build is. If it tends to work fairly often in the matchups I'm wanting, then I start to get comfortable with it since I generally know how it'll fare provided I don't run into something odd.

And at least in Platinum so far, while a lot more players are competent (I'm mostly paired on ladder against platinums, a few diamonds, and the occasional gold) at having a specific plan in mind, they might not be quite good at execution yet. So if you have an early enough push build you get to practice (7-8 minutes), you stand a good chance of catching them offguard.

I had a guy pre-emptively GG me last night. What he didn't know was that, as a turtling Terran, he had missed as I had taken 3 expansions. As he marched through my main taking out what little remained there, he did not notice my Stalkers clearing out his main, or the Dark Templar I had warped in to take out his brand new expo.

I have to say, using Dark Templar when there is no possibility that he has detection or could possibly get it is about the best thing ever.

about 1-2 times a day this week (im on vacation so i get about 5 hours of playtime a day) i have been checked for honesty by mass marines/zealots/zerglings.

Honestly, my scouting has just been what people tell me to do. I send my scout at 12-14 depending on my build, use my first orbcom ability to MULE, and the second to scan, and then do Firg All about exploring their base. Needs some work on my part I guess, like so many other elements in this game.

I spent some time in build order tester and im honestly frightened just how much attention 1 rax 1 factory 1 starport takes to not slip up and forget workers or a refinery entirely without ANY enemies on the field

I had a reverse reverse GG. I figured they guy had won, probably had a few probes left, took out 90% of my base and had phoenixes making sure I didn't re expand, marched my tanks into his base take out his nexus and some probes and he GGs. All I had left was some tanks which his carrier was following and had destroyed just as the nexus went down. As I went to yell "BM" at him he leaves.

Yeah, man. I feel like an old man when I try to execute the simplest of build orders correctly without messing up the timing, let alone doing it while scouting and not forgetting to build units and all kinds of other stuff.

I have also finally started to remember that shift clicking on building SCVs is the best thing.

Not so much for sending them back to minerals but moreso in that it made initial scouting much less of a pain since I can set the first supply depot building SCV to then head out to scout and forget about it (since it's hotkeyed before it builds the depot which I can just check in every once and a while).

I am curious: Should I be using one of the custom maps available to polish my macro for a couple days instead of playing all night and leaving mostly disappointed?

It feels alot like Street Fighter combos to me. As a new Ken player my focus was on completing my short-jab-shoryuken combo when I should just be able to do it from time spent in training mode. As a new Starcraft player its my focus to do macro right and to not leave gaps, but it seems it should be secondhand, muscle memory to build up, expand, make new workers, get new gas, get upgrades, build new production, produce a wave of units, get supply up etc etc etc etc and that my attention in-game should be all over what my opponent is doing

Anyone starting to get a little tired of the MP??? I certainly still love just playing the SP campaign but as of the last couple of days, the kind of fun factor has been starting to fade for me, making the game just become more frustrating rather than something to be viewed as a good challenge. I dont know if it has to do with me being in the Diamond league or not (which I do not think i should be in), but I really would like to go back down to my platinum ways.

My favorite losses so far have been to those weird strategies that bad people use because they can't play a full game. My favorite was when I got boxed in by a planetary fortress, just because it's ridiculous and shouldn't work and I've always wanted to try it. So awesome.

Also, I've found 2v2 with a friend is so much less stressful than 1v1. It's great having somebody who has your back and can complement your army if you didn't build the right counters. Also, you each get to feel like you've earned your wins, meanwhile you can mentally pawn off the responsibilities for your losses to your partner!

There is exactly 1 "clear the map" mission, and you get it out of the way quick. After that every mission has its own twist that actually matters and makes you play a whole different way each mission.

Best thing I could do against this guy was get a bunch of lings close in order to "distract" him and have the blings right behind them. I managed to break in, but I didn't last long. The next time he had 3 siege tanks there. He turtled the match insanely and showed up with about 15 battlecruisers.

It's also the god damn sensor tower that pisses me off, I can't make any surprise attacks because of it.
