Thank you all for the support today. It's not even launch day and the sales we're seeing are.... awe-inspiring. I'm starting to gain hope that we just might be able to finish this game. The whole thing. All of it -- everything on the backburner included.
Today alone we've already made 133 sales so far. It's absolutely madness and I can't even count the sales we're making on Impulse yet ...
I am embarrassingly humbled by all of your gracious support, even knowing that our game isn't finished yet and we're just two guys essentially working with a shoe-string budget we've far and beyond surpassed our pre-order expectations and are starting to begin the climb toward what funds we'd need to complete the game entirely and properly and what we'd need to found the studio.
Perhaps it's a bit premature to think that we'll make enough sales to found the studio but you all are being awfully persuasive.

Congrats! If this game is half as good as it looks / sounds, you should have no problem getting the sales you need to open up a studio.

I'm going to wait for a demo because I feel like it's a policy I should stick to, but I have a lot of faith that you guys have made something worth a look. The scope of your attempt alone makes it worthwhile as a piece of performance art programming.

I certainly hope you get every sale you need and more, Firgof. I just saw Star Ruler pop up on the little Impulse sale popup, so looks like you're getting a little advertising there.

I just pre-ordered on D2D. I just wanted to say, this kind of thing? This is exactly the kind of thing that convinced me to not just buy this game, but to press others to do so too. (I just emailed Gabe informing him that unlike my last 120 purchases and 300$, this on is not going through STEAM because it wasn't an option.)
I get to feel like my money is being repaid directly in new features and improvements. That I'm not just paying for work that has already been done, but for you to keep working and make new stuff. I suppose it makes me a slightly selfish person that that matters to me, but whatever. Keep up the good work!
Excellent - woke up to the popup from Impulse. Pre-ordered this as I said I would earlier. Thanks for making something this intriguing and awesome, looking forward to the 23rd.
Our total sales are available on our website, which are updated ever so often. It's the "Galaxies Served" statistic.
Huh, totally missed that. You mentioned earlier that you couldn't count Impulse sales, is that still true, or are those included there?
16000 sales for the studio, eh? I'm going to need a form e-mail and a lot of contact information. How irritated do you think a credit union would be if an employee used their member e-mail list to advertise a video game?
I was going to wait for the demo because I want to watch my cashflow, but at the same time I figure I can make a few more home-cooked meals and give some incredibly plucky people a little bit of a boost.
I also posted a little preview thing on my blog. Though it feels a bit silly posting it in the thread that informed me about the game. Still! Like, 13 people saw it so you know everyone counts.
It's been a while since I used D2D, but from what I remember they will only let you download your purchase for a limited time unless you pay extra. And even that expired after a year or so. That was a deal breaker for me, now I only use distributors that keep track of your games and offer unlimited downloads.
This is no longer the case. You now have unlimited downloads forever.
Yeah, luckily for us steams owning of the marketplace has pretty much forced 'available for download forever' as the standard.
Ubi still wants like $4 to download your shit again
I'm kinda low on funds at the moment so I have to wait for the demo before I can commit to a purchase (even 25 dollars is a lot right now). I suspect a lot of people may be in the same boat. There may be a further surge of sales after that.
The installer on GG doesn't seem to have created Desktop or Start Menu shortcuts even though I selected the Desktop shortcut option.
Actually, scratch that. It did, but only for that (administrative) user account. A minor complaint, but the shortcuts should probably go to the appropriate "All Users" location for each.
Then again, there are probably comparatively few people with separate user accounts for general use and system administration...
Bleh that stupid bloated software Comrade thinks i'm in Dragon Age Origins and won't let me download it because it's paused. I'M NOT IN DRAGON AGE! IT'S NOT EVEN ON MY PROCESS LIST!
No wait, there we go. Shutting down Steam fixed it.
I'm going to put the word out here and now that Direct 2 Drive should be avoided due to the incredibly crappy bloated malware that is Comrade is used to download stuff. Avoid.
I can't find when I log into Impulse. Doesn't show up under My Software list.
This is my first time using this software. Is this normal?
Impulse doesn't show pre-ordered software on the list before it is available unless you get some sort of pre-release beta with your order that is available immediately.
(also, it isn't available on impulse until monday. enjoy your weekend!)
I'm going to try to secure a refund from Impulse one way or another. Went ahead and got it from D2D instead. Didn't feel like waiting.
Also, the game is interesting because it's a 4X game but everything happens in real time.
The AI sent a shit ton of ships towards my one system. I could see them coming in a giant, red wave...slowly floating through space, barreling down on my tiny planet.
I've just noticed how ridiculously massive fleets can be. Like, I've got a full system colonized and a bunch of them aren't building something? Well they can build my normal Frigate-y combat vessel en masse.
Of course, I still haven't actually like, found or seen an AI planet, so I have a feeling that any second now my awesome array of a billion ships and a couple of starbases will all of a sudden run headfirst into a trillion ships with lasers.
Ship design seems to have quite a high amount of options in how to construct it. When you compare your ship design to the pre set options available you feel fucking stupid, since you can obviously be quite complex with it if you put in enough time.
Certainly has a learning curve as I too am in the Oh my god oh my god what am I doing ahhhh! phase.
My first two cracks at ship design ended... badly. First battleships off the line went derelict the second they launched. First set of carriers did better but ended up disabled when they were patrolling their home system when I wasn't watching so that will take some detective work to find out what I did wrong (at least it gives the salvagers something to do) .
Of course I was feeling good about my progress still, had what I thought was a good sized fleet forming, that is until I happen to spot my neighbor's fleet. I had first thought "Oh, that's strange, the ridge of the galaxy seems a bit off colored and shifting and OH MY GOD... I... I need a bigger fleet..." Thankfully, they are one of the peaceful empires I've run into.
I'm just impressed with the optimization. I've just flitted about a bit, but the game started instantly, loaded in a couple of seconds, and I can zoom in and out on a hundred or so stars extremely smoothly.

I'd never buy anything from there that wasnt $1
Maybe I can get a refund and just buy it through Gamersgate or Direct2Dirve. They get it now.
Oh, and it looks like it is definitely downloadable on GamersGate now. Going at 1.5MB/s currently. It's only a 126MB download.
That's what I get for ignoring you guys.
mouth-frothing excitement!

What the hell am I doing oh god what the shit is that. Where is my galaxy. What do I do.
Oh god there is so much going on and all I'm doing is colonizing one system.
Example: The AI from the tutorial ruthlessly pwned me.
