So, I was just messing around in the tutorial, and I was all, "Well, there's these other planets in my system, I guess I'll go over and see who's there."
Scout ship trundles over, and finds ... nothing.
"That's weird," I said to myself. "I could've sworn that I was exchanging treaties with someone. Oh - I see - there's another star system next to mine. He must be there."
Nope.
Yes, folks, even the tutorial starts off with a huge galaxy.
Bahaha. Yeah, apparently trying to be clever with only having ramscoop engines and solar power generators for system-only ships can make them just sit there until they explode. Whoops.
Also, I don't even know what's going on in my systems right now, but I was attacked and my brilliant strategy of mass-producing my own personal battleship designs and ridiculously mass-producing the "Wasp", a size 1 ship with only a laser and thrusters managed to work wonderfully.
EDIT: Oh I get it. I can't have a solar cell without capacitors.
Has anyone got the jump drives to work? I'm wondering if I'm not giving the command correctly.
Unrelated note - A huge star scale ship with level 12 or so lasers will one shot planets.
The default AI is pretty unfriendly - plan accordingly.
The economy information is kind of unclear to me - newly settled worlds (and even some that have been settled for awhile will have one or more of thier resources sit at 50% of capacity. Do fleets have a maintence cost? Ore keeps going down on planets even when I'm not building anything in my empire.
Quick update folks. Gamersgate and D2D released an out of date build. You should uninstall your current version of Star Ruler and download the install the new version.

What should the version number be? I just started downloading mine a couple min ago. I take it I should be fine?

I haven't started it up, been busy with other stuff, but all of this sounds really hectic. Is there a pause button or something so you can design ships in peace?

One thing I'd like to see is some options for the AI, like setting to to be peacenicks or maybe just a "very easy" where my ships do double damage or something, until I get the ropes better

The first thing I like to do in all 4X games is start a custom game in a tiny universe with no opponents. That way, I can figure out how all the non-combat gameplay works. Maybe that's possible in SR?
How competent is the AI without giving them cheats? Good AI opponents is about all it takes to make me buy a 4X game.

Whatever system count you want, 0 AI opponents. There you go.

Well in the tutorial, the skies on your home planet darken with the coming of a hundred ships within a few minutes who will wipe out your pathetic species, if that answers your question

I think ore is always being processed into metals, which are moved to the Empire bank.

I think you're right - I downloaded the updated version noticed how the empire bank was working.
the thing i'm most impressed by is how intuitive this game is.
for all the options and customization available, i've basically got things figured out after only a couple hours. this is awesome compared to a thing like SEV, where there's a button for everything and nothing is labeled with text.
Well, you guys got me. I caved and picked up the game on Impulse. When I sent an email to Gabe N I said I would guarantee a purchase from me if it made it to Steam. Guess I'll have to buy it twice if that ever happens.
Is there any kind of Fleet Management window? I thought the tutorial said something about it, but I don't really remember.
I'd LOVE to have some good ship and fleet management windows.
The point i'm at, I have a several systems, all producing my "Heavy Capital Ships." Occasionally, I select all the combat ships in the system and funnel them into one system where i'm about to declare war and start a big fight.
I wish I could see how many I had coming from where and totals. Not easy at all to keep track of all the floating triangles.
Also, very little control in combat. Ships pretty much just float and auto attack whenever they please.
Also, the AI is obliterating me. I never have enough ships.
Screenshots! If you think this looks confusing...that's because it is. Need some more windows.
I think only 4 AIs isn't enough for a default number of star systems game, as I've just now, after getting level 10 on every single research node, started hunting for them and they seem to be on the opposite side of the galaxy from me. At least all I've run into is scouts so far and I just walked from my start on the rim to the center (I'm playing on Flattened until I get a grasp on things).

Well my one wish so far with the game is for a Fleet Management window.
The way I picture it would be like this:
The window would be broken down in to two sections. On the right would be all you ships NOT in a fleet. The second side would have all your fleets listed with little icon to expand them so you can see a list every ship in a particular fleet. As an added bonus, you'd be able to drag and drop ships to different or new fleets.
As an example I drew a fancy picture :P

Be careful.
He's also not afraid to build a Dreadnought fleet and annihilate your puny empire.
I know.

Pretty much. I mean I wanted to wait until steam or a demo, but my D2D account has quite a few games on it...blurgh.

most certainly.

It's more about the big picture and moving resources and ships around rather then micromanaging everything and every ship.
