So I got a ton of forms filled by names like NOTCH HIMSELF OMG, BALLS BALLS TESTICLES, Is this the facebook? I was just clicking links and ended up here somehow. How do I talk to my grandson?, etc'

I'm obviously going to remove those, but why would anyone intentionally try to fuck this up is beyond me.

    EDIT:

    NEW VERSION IS OUT

    http://notch.tumblr.com/post/942787216/minecraft-alpha-1-0-16-minecraft-server-0-1-1-and-a
First of all, if you’re playing the downloaded game, you will have to download a new version of the launcher from here:
    http://www.minecraft.net/download.jsp

The reason for this is that I had to add some authentication bits to the launcher instead of to the game (which is downloaded after authentication), and the launcher can’t update itself yet.

    Client changelog:

    * Added support for more records
    * Added online authentication for online servers

    Server changelog:

    * The server can now be started in either online/secure mode or offline/insecure mode. A secure server requires all connecting players to first authenticate on www.minecraft.net, then checks that the authentication matches, before letting the player in. A server running in offline mode won’t do any such checks, nor will it ask the client to authenticate, but you can’t be sure that people who connect really are who they claim they are. Offline mode is meant for LAN plan where you know the people connecting to the server.
    * Added ban/pardon commands to ban and unban a player from the game
    * Added ban-ip/pardon-ip commands to ban and unban a specific ip (you have to kick the player manually)
    * Added op/deop commands to add/remove a player from the op list
    * Added player ops. They can send server commands by typing a slash followed by a server command. Server ops can also build/destroy blocks near the spawn area.
    * Made the server save terrain more frequently

    [edit:]

The mac launcher is fixed now. Download again!

The possibilities of a large server (mmo size) could be incredible for this game. Communities popping up, main centers etc etc

    Could be real epic :winky:

I am really, really surprised this is the first free build mmo that's sprouted up. Or, at least one that isn't made by fuckmuppets and lets us have the control. Add in the "claim" system that he wants to do, and this is an awesome thing.

I seriously doubt this game will ever reach anything approaching "MMO" status. It'll have a big world like an MMO, but the game just doesn't have the infrastructure to support that many people in one world with all the other things going on. It's going to be a gargantuan effort just syncing all the mobs in the game with the few people SMP currently allows.

I'm still blindly optimistic that one day the game will support more than 20 people at once though (likely on beefy server-class hardware of course).

I took a look at wurm a while back it just seems so... dull. I mean blocks are pretty low end graphical wise but the style just makes everything exciting and pop. And it's definitely more unique than wurm.

I'd imagine it was probably more fun than it appears.

They are about the same level on the unique scale, Wurm isn't WoW + Digging, bit more complex than that, but this is not Wurmchat, this is Minecraftchat. Anyone make a Protoss or Terran SC2 skin yet?

I played minecraft no problem on an old pentium D with 2gb of ram and a ati2600hd, fullscreen (1650x1080). So I'd guess it would run on a wide range of systems. As for specific requirements I couldn't really find any.

For information on the progress of the SMP check Notch's Dev. Blog, considering it is still in alpha, and the level of polish Notch likes to put on things, I'd say it will be a bit before there is anything "official" for SMP, but as far as stability goes, probably ~1 month I'd guess.

Thinking about SMP some more, I'm thinking that the "currencies" will be Iron, Diamond, and Obsidian.

I think that Redstone and Lava will be the things most likely to be "purchased", with records and Mossy Cobblestone showing up occasionally and selling for quite a lot.

Especially since Obisidan is a pain to mine and is immune to explosions.

Without the threat of baddies at night this game losses so much. Nothing is quite like hiding in your house at night afraid to go outside or running into a cave planting torches all over in a panic over every little noise.
