Every damn world is pretty eerie at night. When the sun sets I climb to the highest point of my tower and watch the skeletons running around the base. Especially those random music notes that play. UGGGGH my nerves are getting fried from cave exploring, I don't need random music to make it worse!!

Minecraft team deathmatch! Lots of tiny island. Most of the islands have 1 block of cover, and like 20 creepers underneath. They all look identical. The rest have actual diggable areas for cover, and bows. Material to make boats can be found. That would be so much fun. Eventually turns into pirate boat matches while leftover creepers swim around like mines.

Do those not signify anything at all?
They do, but when you go about 10 minutes of silence but the noise of your feet on the grass or rock, then suddenly a few notes play to signify like, midnight or something. It doesn't even do it every time...
Also, weird cave sounds like trains, or children playing or whatever. Creepy. As. Hell. Especially when you're in a dark cavern underlit by lava, then you just might be IN Hell.
Today I generated a world made up entirely of tiny islands
This is the least eerie thing possible
Until you find a cave system. Then you realize not only are you exploring a possibly enemy filled cavern, it's also completely underwater. Better watch your pickaxe.

hahah yes. "Dwarf has canceled mining job: damp stone."
Oh, you think you're safe on your little island paradise? Well, you won't be so confident when the shapeless, seaweed covered horrors from beyond the deepest deep come shambling onto your beach, moaning inutterable sounds that too closely resemble words.

Ia! Ia! Cthulhu fhtagn!
Haha yes!
Sea monsters would rule. I was just thinking the other day how awesome it would be to have to fight off a giant block squid, all chopping off tentacles and firing arrows into it.
Man I want a team of minions... (oh be honest, dwarves) and just tell them what I want done. Mine this area! Build a platform HERE.
You three, grab some spears and guard against* ssssssssssSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSSS (crap) BOOM.
I imagine it like you having the same interface, only infinite reach and the blocks you place are just shadows. Your minions then build it as over the shadows.
Sonar on
I'm building a real pirate ship. Really. Wanna help? Click here!

I'm positive Notch knows about the desire for spawn points from at least one person, since I've mentioned it to him directly. All he said was "I'll keep that in mind".
I think he has some sort of plans for it, perhaps integrating it with furniture or land claim flags so you can actually place it as an item, but evidently despite my pleading he didn't think it was too important.
However. I have found that...
There is a way to move your spawn point in Infdev if you're up for a little work.
1. In Infdev, go stand in the spot you want to set as your new spawn point, then choose Quit, so you 'log out' there.
2. Open up NBTedit (get it from here.)
3. Load your Infdev world, by going to your %appdata%\.minecraft\saves\world1-5\ directory and opening the level.dat file there, in NBTedit.
4. Click the plus sign next to the "Data" folder, where you will see your SpawnX, SpawnY, and SpawnZ stats. This is where the world knows to put you.
5. Change the numbers of these three entries to your current X,Y,Z position, which can be found, in order, under the data>player>pos folder.
6. Save.
And that's it! You're done. I've tested this out and after throwing myself into some lava I popped up ten feet away where I'd started, in the middle of my underground cave.
It's a third-party workaround but at least it works!
On Zetx's server we has six people carving out the middle of a mountain. We then planted a tree and dig a 6x6 hole from the summit down. Next we plan to have the tree grow out that giant hole and build a fortress around it, sprawling upwards.
Good job guys, I deposited all the stone I had in a neat pile in the corner of the cavern.

That sounds really easy to automate, I wounder who's gonna be the one that creates the program.

So I decided my efforts were useless.
edit: To use the skins, download the .png, and go to minecraft's homepage, login, click preferences. Then, upload the skin.
Here's the .png for mine if you want it.
Also looks like there will be a secret Friday update this week as well.

You can use some program to modify your save and adjust your spawn point. Maybe that will help?
