I'm currently working in a world like this. I solved the problem by building low structures with grass roofs and hiding any entrances with trees. There's a vast underground network of tunnels and undersea domes but you can hardly tell the map has been built on from the world previewer.

Any structures I did build above ground are randomly and organically shaped and look more like hills and cliffs than buildings.

My lighthouse is a giant tree that took forever to grow with torches hidden amongst the leaves.

It's kind of a neat exercise seeing how well you can hide things within the landscape.

I agree, I'd love to get snow, lava zones, forest zones. I'd also love underground plants and shit. Or the ability to get grass seed and grow them underground.

So, essentially we all want a first person Dwarf Fortress. Maybe Notch could work with Toady on Dwarf Fortress: The MMO. Crappy graphics and to-do lists for all! Endless Crafting!

At least Notch knows how to design an interface and a visually pleasing game. I would actually LOVE an amalgam of the two games. The incredible detail of Dwarf Fortress and complete mercilessness of it is wonderful, it's just a wholly unapproachable game. Minecraft, if it continues in the path it's headed, will reach that level of awesome while maintaining the simple gameplay that would make it enjoyable.

Well, you can hide in a hole and wait the night, or just build a wall around the area you'll be building in (you can use dirt) - 3 blocks or higher will make sure that you're safe, then light the whole place up and build - day and night.

Hell, my "house" has a huge flattened-out area around it with walls, and the cave access is inside this area... I basically don't care anymore if it's day or night since I got everything I need inside :) Even animals like cows and pigs spawn inside so I only need to go out if I require stuff only the mobs drop - like gunpowder - and even then I get my fair share of mobs while exploring the cave systems, so I really haven't needed to do so...

A torch hat would be so excellent.

oooh and also: the ability to throw/drop lit torches (maybe make it a seperate item like "flares" or something) so you can drop them down shafts and such to see how far it goes without actually having to dig down or take some ridiculous leap of faith.

A mobile light source is probably one of the most oft-requested features, but It's probably not incredibly likely. Considering how the lighting system works, a mobile light source would generate a noticeable amount of tile updates at a pretty fast pace, significantly burdening server bandwidth.

Throwable that only lights up once it attaches to a surface.

As for handheld torches, they only really need to show up locally. You don't have to display them remotely. Most online games solve this by just lighting up the player model in night environments so they're easy to see, rather than adding a torch to them.

Imagine dropping a flare down a newly discovered stygian abyss only to catch a brief glimpse of some unspeakable horror looking up at you from a ledge part ways down before it fades back into the darkness, not even sure that you've seen what you thought you saw.

but AkimboEG has a good point about the tile-updates; it would take alot of quick computing and rendering.

That's the easy part though. The actual rendering of mobile light source would be hard on the system, I imagine. It would re-rendering everything it moved past constantly.

Having a throwable torch that only lights up once it connects would be a pretty awesome workaround/alternative to this, though. I like that idea alot too.

Yeah, something that only lights up once it hits a solid object is much more viable. Also, now I want to be able to light my arrowheads on fire and have them burn whatever they hit.

Picked this up last night after a friend of mine told me about it. Did some single player, and then we (after half an hour of fiddling with stuff) tried multiplayer with me hosting the server. Sadly, we discovered that not all of the survival mechanics are working in multiplayer yet :( Hopefully we'll do some properly once the stuff is added.

That said, I see there's a few PA servers out there, is any of them paticularly frequented or newbie friendly? And, if people are on fairly often, what sorts of times?

Yeah it'd probably work okay in offline mode. I like the idea of the flare/fire arrow though idea on collision with the surface.

It would suck if the hole was really deep or there was water at the bottom though!

I've been playing this game in SP for a week or two and I jumped onto Zetx's (I think) Server last night and it was pretty sweet. It was the first time I'd tried multiplayer and as soon as I showed up people were asking what should be done with this and that, as if my opinion mattered, and we all ended up collaborating on hollowing out a very large mountain for an underground castle with a tree at the center.

Everyone was nice about explaining how things worked and overall it was pretty awesome. I'm looking forward to attempting to find the cave again so I can check it's progress. (I'll probably never be able to find it though, the way there was very complicated)

I reeeeeally hope we can designate "pvp only" areas like the land claim flags. I will never play on an open pvp server unless I feel like being a dick and killing random people (which I would still be really bad at).

I mean I'm just picturing working on an awesome tower, halfway up, and a guy sets you on fire and stabs you in the gut with a sword and dumps all the building materials you were carrying into the ocean.

Or the alternative, being so paranoid that you're going to get ganked that you have to walk for half an hour before you start building.

It seems that about 1/10 trees ends up being a 'Great' tree, one with branches and such, twice as tall as a standard tree. I have stacked 'Great' trees on top of eachother by placing a single block of dirt on top and getting it to grow another layer.
