There's a surprising number of people here playing on peaceful, considering this board's boner for punishing gameplay. Does the game just default to peaceful or something?
There's no point to being punished when there aren't any rewards for doing so. When he adds in random drops that lead to rare and unique items, then we'll talk. Right now I just want to build and monsters are a hindrance to that.
I was exploring and nightfall came, I made a little walkway in the face of a cliff but I dropped a block in front of it and just waited out the night. OH HI THERE SKELETON who then raped my face. So I switched it to peaceful so I can build my shit first.
I didn't even have a fucking torch yet, couldn't find coal to at least give myself fire to do some mining in the cave while I waited dayfall.
The easiest way to survive the first night? Dig straight down three blocks, put a block over your head. Go make dinner and come back in 10 minutes or so.
Well what a hum dinger, my pick broke while trying to build my way back up to the surface. Luckily there's enough dirt in this cave to break apart. Jesus, I brought like 4 picks with me just in case. All this for 12 iron ores. I'm going to smelt the shit out of that.

Thanks to corky who pointed out that you couldn't /save or /load locations on my server. Turns out I forgot to set the location saving flag to true. Oops. It's fixed now. (Someone else may have said something, but I only just saw his message on the console. No wonder I was the only one using it. )

I just got some wood with my bare hands, built a crafting bench and a wooden pick, then got 2 pieces of coal, made 2 torches, mined a small hole in a mountain and lit it up, then just closed it up for the night leaving a single block unblocked so I was able to see outside... Allows you to do some work during the night, for example crafting more tools or enlarging your little hideout
Hardest part is finding the coal, but with some effort you'll get a couple pieces (I could only find 2 pieces, but even 1 is enough) This on hard
I am super pumped when the mulitplayer gets all figured out. I mean, after just a few days of playing I managed to make a neat little fort by myself. I can't imagine what a group of people could actually accomplish.
so please say notch has mentioned players spawning as skeletons and creepers etc. designed to attack / blow up players but unable to dig or contruct.
though I suppose players spawning as creepers would have to be its own server mod, the griefing potential would be astronomical
if this were to exist, i would think the server would have to have a "block respawn" time, so creeper-players dont just blow an entire area away. as well as a random respawn for the players so you cant camp a respawn point.

The land claim thing that prevents damage could work - I think a big damaging aoe explosion is enough to be fun without needing to blow up blocks.

There are plenty of us not playing on peaceful and loving it

In my game I spent the first... I don't know 12 nights outside by myself without a house just running around in the dark.
Granted, it sucks being lost in the dark, it's not as bad as some people make it out to be.
Make creepers explode if they're unable to get closer than n blocks to the player within a certain amount of time. Alternatively, they can just blow up when the sun hits them, but that could be a pretty big hit to a server.
When I began my current map, I thought that the landscape was the most beautiful I've seen so far in Minecraft. So when I found my first cave, and decided to turn it into a mine, I never uncovered the entrance. Now, I've marked about a dozen huge cave systems with several dozen openings, but I can't find my first mine... and I left quite a lot of things in chests in there... silly me.

Heard the proposition that RIAA and MPAA should join forces and form "Music And Film Industry Association"?
I just fell into a cave and this sucks. Like. I was digging and did the tile underneath me and whoops I fell about 80 meters (1 meter = block). I barely survived.
Rule #1 of minecraft: never dig directly underneath of you.

If you made any kind of manmade shaped rooms or something underground, you can find it with cartographer.
It's a mapping program, but if you choose to do the "cave mode" it'll show you underground places, and any human shapes should be obvious. If you do cave mode with oblique-angled, it'll show up even better, but it'll probably take 5 minutes to make the map, especially if you have a large map.
FYI- The thing doesn't tell you when it's busy rendering, so if windows says "not responding" that just means it's busy making a map usually.
So in today's misadventures with creepers, I accidentally breached my entire basement and had to fight off a whole wall of flooding ocean.
I didn't think there could be any harm in harvesting some of my bamboo garden at dusk, but the creepers thought otherwise. Two must have spawned right on top of me because it turned dark, then suddenly I was running backwards for my life. The first futile sword swing only angered the beast, and the subsequent chain explosion left me seeing a red haze. The last thing I saw under the respawn button, was at least 10 squares of ocean flooding into my basement, and a bamboo garden left to ruin.
My mineshaft to bedrock received it's first inhabitant as well. Running up the stairs with a backpack full of red dust, iron, and some diamonds, I heard the dreaded "THWONG!" and nearly broke my keyboard as I jumped out of my chair. (it was pitch black out and dead quiet too) Dodging arrows, I nearly made it to the surface with just a few hearts left. The skeleton, in a bid to take me out, jumps off the top ledge, but is just a square short. I didn't stop to see what happened to him as I rushed back home. Needless to say, the mine entrance has a door now.

I honestly can't wait till vic's server becomes a monster spawning hell once the monsters are turned back on. There is a lack of lighting all over the place. And its going to be difficult to light all the places which the monsters will spawn.
Yeah, I think Skeletons are the most annoying of the opponents. I fear not the creeper: if I'm careful, there can almost always be a wall between them and I. But I fear the skeleton.
No, why am I lying? I fear them all, even the little slimes.
I had to stop playing the other day. I was mining, and I'd dropped a few hundred dirt and shale cubes in a bobbing pile to make room for iron and crafting. When I turned around a minutes later, I saw movement and just about went into panic mode.
Peaceful people: without Creepers, there is no TNT. Don't miss out!
TNT is way too inefficient to use for mining; you could easily mine hundreds of cobblestone blocks with a few pickaxes in the time it takes to even make one block of TNT.

No, you can only craft swords
Because the bows require monsters to be present to make them
Hey! Don't mock our sheer, unabashed terror!

THE EYES. SO MANY RED EYES.
I wasn't suggesting that people on peacefulcraft should craft swords and then go on a Quixote-esque hunt for spiders that aren't there
to protect themselves from zombies that also aren't there
why ever not? seems a mighty fine suggestion
edit: although personally I prefer to get tooled up before switching difficulties from peaceful
And then cower in their cave the first night as they listen to the angry hissing outside.
I am the fucking man. Save while in-game. Doesn't work as a console command.
Default command is /sv
With hey0 mod stuff: hm.java | hm.class -- Requires player to be an admin by default (you'll need to edit it out if you want it differently)
Without anything else: hm.java | hm.class
Tested by /sv'ing then killing my server.

Fuck.
At least you can get useful items from spiders and creepers.
I physically twitched when I read that.
