Well technically you can burn creepers to death, which would possibly net you gunpowder. But it's still going to be a chore since fire does a lot less damage and is hard to manage without setting those green bastards off.

Player damage isn't implemented yet, so no matter what setting you're on, they won't hurt you.
It depends on whether you can scoop up lava aside from source blocks, I forget. I don't think lava can be made infinite like water can.
But I've seen other people complain that the iron for the bucket is a pretty precious resource to waste too. It costs 3 units that have to be themselves smelted...3 units of coal is 24 smeltings alone, and it's much more plentiful to mine.
when you find lava waterfalls you can only scoop up the source block, but I THINK you can scoop up lava from pools of lava that people normally find diamonds near
