WoW - DirectSound3D / OpenAL / ALchemy

#1. You need a currently ACTIVE (ie paying) WoW account to post in any of the official WoW forums? Unbelievable if true! Perhaps someone with an active account could post this on the tech support forum for me? (assuming it can't be answered well here)

#2. I'm under the impression that despite it being over 3.5 years since Vista was released, that to get full proper sound support for this game under Vista or 7, I need to use ALchemy.

IS that correct? There haven't been updates or something to get around that? (ie. OpenAL support patched into the game)

Is that still a possibility? Or will ALchemy always be needed as far as anyone can tell?

I figure it might be an exception because it's one pre-Vista game that is still played by a good deal of people, and I'd imagine support for it would help it to run as well as possible on current operating systems.

Why do you care about a sound issue if you're currently not playing the game?

I play WoW on Vista and it has sound. Is that what you're asking?

Google searched "world of warcraft surround sound"

    Second result:

So yes, World of Warcraft supports surround sound as long as you have a proper system, and have things configured correctly in windows.

If you aren't talking about surround sound, then your post is very confusing.

    http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/DirectSound3D#Windows_Vista

Vista/7 doesn't allow hardware audio acceleration (Creative X-Fi cards, for example) with regards to DirectSound (and DirectSound 3D and such).

So games written for XP that used DS3D will lose surround sound and/or EAX effects when played in Vista. (try Half-Life, for example)

Unless you use Creative's ALchemy program, which converts the DS3D stuff to OpenAL, which can be hardware accelerated in Vista/7

So the question is, was WoW ever updated to use OpenAL or some other sound API to allow for full as-intended sound under Vista/7?

Or does one need ALchemy to get the best sound possible?

Far and away most games pre Vista need ALchemy if they are DirectSound games. However, since this game is still played by millions, there exists a possibility it is an exception and got a substantial update somewhere along the way to have better compatibility with Vista/7

The source engine is another one in question I'm wondering about. Cuz HL2 is pre-Vista, but Portal is post.

Wow supports Vista Surround Sound, no Alchemy needed for the sound. Tested here. My 5.1 sound great in Vista.

So like, stuff behind you in the game only comes out of the rear channels?

It's possible other stuff is missing like EAX effects... really if it was patched into the game to use OpenAL or something I'd just like to see some documentation or something saying so.

It'd be the only game I know to have done that.
