The "hold the off button until it turns off" button didn't work even, so rebooting wasn't an option. It stayed crashed until I plugged it into my computer, at which point it shut down.

It rebooted just fine, then I uninstalled the fuck out of Yelp and haven't put it back since. Because fuck that noise, you know?

So my iPhone4 just showed up, but it doesn't seem to want to activate. I ordered it straight from at&t, and there's a sim on the manifest, but not in the box (I assume it's already in there like it was for my 3g..) Do they want me to stick the one from my old phone in there, maybe?

    [edit]
nevermind.. Got it figured out. Yay! New phone!

You can pretty much always restart an iOS device by holding the lock button and the home button. Simply holding the lock button to shut down is like shutting down Windows. Pressing both is like pressing and holding the power button on the front of your case.

Strange.. It seems to be a wifi issue, as if I disconnect, it works fine.

Not my router, as I'm still able to browse the internet and stuff.. Does the iP4 need port forwarding or something for the app store?

Fixed.. Bit of a strange issue, actually.

Apparently the wifi antenna/drivers on the iP4 don't play well with the G wifi on older routers.

I have a netgear WGR614 which apparently a lot of people have been having problems with.

By simply switching the wifi channel from "b and g" to "b only" it now works great.

Which is kinda crappy, because, y'know, g is better. But I've been meaning to pick up a new router anyway, and if other peoples reports are any indication, that also fixes the issue.

I've encountered a bit of a weird bug when an app tries to send an email (as in, to export data.) It won't send, so I wind up having to open Mail.app, go to my Outbox, and then send from there.

Anyone else encounter this before/have a solution?

The update broke searching artist by letter for me. You know on the right side, how you can tap a letter and jump to artists starting with that letter? Now all of my artists are under 123 rather than being divided by letter, and searching doesn't work at all, on iPhone or iPad. It's not a huge deal, but it's inconvenient when you have a ton of artists to scroll through.

the iPad version of the app is fantastic, though, and I can't wait to use it with the Apple TV.

OK, so the new touch-screen nano?
Much easier to use than I was expecting.
Basically the menu button is a left->right swipe, the middle button is a tap and everything else is there on the screen.
Physical volume buttons are the big thing that makes it not-useless though.

Mine worked fine until I decided to take them with me to the gym. The sweat managed to run down into the control and muck things up. I love them so much though that I bought a new set and grabbed the nano buds without a control for using at the gym.

I usually have major issues with earbuds because my ears are on the small side. The Apple buds manage to fit comfortably while also eliminating road noise to the point of actually being useful when I plug them into my i4. Which is more than I can say for the Plantronics Bluetooth handsfree I bought a few years ago for much more money.

You may find more luck with some of the aftermarket buds with inline controls. I'm pretty sure you can also buy the inline controls separate, with an attached female jack.

The trouble with separate inline control adapters is they go at the end of the headphone cord, so unless you have one of those split cords for use with armband-players, you either get a super-long cord or your inline control ends up basically right on top of the player itself.

As for 3rd party earbuds with inline controls, I've gone through quite a few. It's a bit embarrassing. I tried these: Scosche buds. Absolutely terrible. Do not buy them. Awful sound quality, the buttons were garbage, couldn't use them for more than a day.

Next I bought these from an Apple Store: Skullcandy 50/50s. I'd used Skullcandy's before when I was in a bind. The sound quality is decent, not fantastic, but not terrible. The controls worked well. However, after about a month the left earbud stopped working unless I bent the cord a certain way. Luckily they gave me a refund, but it was online-store credit and they were out of stock until very recently so I had to buy a different pair while I waited.

These are the ones I'm using at the moment: Sony buds. Inexpensive, they get the job done, no troubles so far (since August).

My favorite company is Sennheiser - they have great sound quality and a two-year replacement warranty, which I've used twice with no trouble. However, at the time I was buying the only low-priced earbuds they had didn't have the volume controls, only mic/button. They've got a few more models now, but they're over $100. If you're willing to spend that much, I'd say they're worth it.

Thanks for the recommendations, I got a pair of these. I don't really need high quality, most of my listening with them is podcasts at work, so I think they'll be fine.

Edit: I haven't been dunking them in water or sweating on them, so I'm not sure why my Apple earbuds keep dying. The first set died progressively and would change the volume on their own, but this second set suddenly died, and after a little poking with a multimeter I think the mic wire came apart somewhere.

I'm not sure if I asked this before, but I need a bit of help with my iPod Touch.

Recently, I got an iMac as a desktop and, thanks to the nice, 1TB Hard Drive within it instead of my laptop's (which is almost used up). As such, I'd like to move the iPod over to the mac. I've even already ported my music over.

Just one problem: How do I sync my iPod with the iMac without losing everything in there? i.e., My Contacts, My Notes, all the saved-game data in most of my apps?

I don't mind buying refurbished if its worth it, I saw on the apple site that I could get a 5th gen 16g Nano for $149 and I think Id rather have the new one since its only $179

That's phone support for the iMac. The iPod has its own phone support groups. Feel free to try getting in touch with the CPU people, but they may have absolutely no idea how to sync an iAnything with the Mac.

This may be moot, though. If the 90 days have expired he's looking at paying for support either way (and iPod support is cheaper). Unless you've got AppleCare, of course.

It's a bit easier to navigate the menus while running using the scroll wheel versus trying to touch the proper regions or swipe. Again, this is only while in mid-run and not wanting to stop.

Like I said, it's minor; plus I plan on running this nano into the ground before I replace it.

You know, I'm not entirely certain about that. Initially sure, but I suspect that it may turn out to be far easier to learn than it initially appears. Especially if the buttons on the main menu are customisable.

Sony is really hard to beat. The E-series are excellent and dirt cheap (but I'm not sure if the 16GB model is still available), the S-series aren't much more expensive and come with a built-in speaker. You're looking at $130 US, max. Sony also does some touch screen Walkmans, towards the top of your price range, but I don't know anything about those.

The thing with Apple products- and any Apple owner can confirm this- strictly speaking, you are paying more and getting less. The advantages of iPods are that they are sturdy, aesthetically pleasing and easy to use. If you get a touch/iPhone, you've got wi-fi, apps, games, etc.

Taken only as MP3 players, they leave a lot to be desired: audio quality is poor, and you have to contend with proprietary bullshit- that is to say, everything is designed to work very well in one way.

    Spoiler for rant:
I'll give you the example that ultimately drove me away from Apple: Software updates wipe all the content off your iPod (why this is the case in 2010, I have no idea, but I'm not a software engineer), so when you begin the updating process, you are prompted to back up the content to your computer. Fine so far. However, I have a tiny SSD as my primary hard drive with just enough space for Windows and small applications. The updater, apparently unaware of any of my other hard drives, told me I didn't have enough space to back up the content. I cancelled the update, went into iTunes and attempted to back up the content manually, figuring there must be an option to specify a drive that way. But outside of updating, you can only back up things like apps, pictures and preferences.

I'm not suggesting that this is a problem you'll even run into- my computer's configuration isn't common. But it's representative of a pervasive narrow-mindedness evident in the design of iTunes and iPod. The philosophy is that it should all "just work," which is admirable. In streamlining the experience, they've sacrificed options and marginalized users with more specific demands. I don't want to get into iTunes here, since I know there are a lot of its proponents here, but suffice it to say there is better software out there, and iPods are extremely limited by their inability to be used without software. Which brings me to Sony.

I became disenchanted with my iPod as an MP3 player a long time ago (still think it's fantastic for couch web browsing and small games, though) and bought a Sony E-series 16GB. Again, fewer features- just music and video. But this simplicity is its strength: when you plug it in, it behaves like a USB drive. No drivers, no software, just drag and drop or use Windows Media. Sound quality is excellent. Battery life is tremendous. Firmware updates are rare, and somehow manage to not erase all your shit.

I've heard Creative also does good MP3 players, apparently with superior audio quality, but their pricing is more in line with Apple's. They can also be bulky and ugly.

tl;dr: If you're not buying an iPod touch for its sweet bells and whistles, avoid Apple. More money, poor audio quality, inflexible software. My personal recommendation is Sony.

PS., regardless of what MP3 player you get, throw the included headphones in the garbage and buy your own.
