Anyone know if smart cover imitations are likely to be any worse than the real thing? I mean it's not a complex bit of kit really right? It's finally iPad time in our lives but the wife really wants a purple cover, which of course Apple don't do.
Also any pitfalls to avoid with getting a bluetooth keyboard for it?
I had a to buy a protective case for my wife (the clumsiest person in the world) and it's one of the "Lente Designs" cases on Amazon that retail for ~£20. It takes a couple of tries to get it to lock on close, as it not locking in to the iPad to form a hinge there's a lot of variation in the angle that it can close at depending on how the iPad itself is sat in the holder part.
But, it provides a little protection against drops off the couch, falling off the bedside table when she precariously perches it and didn't cost the Earth, so I can't complain.
The one about the fucking space hairdresser and the cowboy. He's got a tinfoil pal and a pedal bin
A bit more all enclosing but good reviews and seems to otherwise match up to the smart cover feature set. A bit more protection is probably a good idea as well as I've no doubt our 1.5 year old daughter will want to play.
Not using the screen protector though. Ugh. Hate 'em. Would rather scratches.
Random question! I have an old iphone 4 I'm not using anymore (since I have a 4S now), but the backplate doesn't stay on (obviously not an issue if in a case) and the home button requires a rather large amount of pressure to actually trigger. Any hope of selling this thing? What's the best thing to do with it?

I believe both of those things are actually pretty easily repairable. There are numerous sites out there that will give you instructions on how to do so, like iFixit.
I'd try repairing them yourself and trying to resell it. I'm sure you could still get some decent money for it.
But...then I have to spend money. I want to sell the thing. Not replace it. I have a 4S.
If you spend $150 to get a brand new replacement, you could probably sell it for double that amount.
In its current condition, you might get $50 - $100, at best.
Buh? Isn't a new 4S like, 200 bucks?
No. You're thinking of subsidized with-contract prices. I sold my iPhone 4 for almost 400 bucks when I got my 4S. And that was on Craigslist for like 30 minutes. Unsubsidized (without a contract) the 4S sells for like $600-$700, and the 4 is probably around $400 right now.
Check eBay and/or Craigslist to see what they're going for.
Everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty
I don't know where you're located, but I wouldn't mind paying $50 for it as-is.

Is $150 or $50 with AppleCare for a total replacement? I've dropped my 4S a couple of times and it's got some dings. I was thinking of replacing it for resale before the 5 comes out.
My wife got an out of warranty replacement on her 4S for $150 when she ran it through the washing machine. She did end up buying AppleCare+ for the replacement phone though so they may have discounted that replacement price...

If its less than a year old they will replace it for free. But maybe not for some dings.

That would be an exception to the policy. Any accidental damage costs $149 (for pre iPhone 4S models) or $199 (for the 4S) to replace the phone. Assuming you don't have AppleCare+, that is. That said, exceptions are made often so it's never a bad idea to head into a store and ask.

This. And remember, the genius you deal with typically has 100% authority to make that call. So being nice, honest, and not at all dickface will go a long way. You may get a genius who feels like making your day a little better. Worst case scenario, it's still only $150. You'd still profit in the long run.

Is there any reason to use Instapaper over, say, Pocket? They both seem to do essentially do the same thing, except Pocket seems to do it a bit fancier and at the cost of free. Wondering if there's something about Instapaper I'm missing considering all of the praise it gets.

The developer (Marco Arment) is pretty well liked in the Mac developer scene so that's part of the praise. That being said he was also one of the first to market with the app and it works really well. I've tried a few of the other "free" ones but Instapaper is the app I default back to. It works well, is pretty fast and I've never had any issues with the syncing.
I also like that he just focuses on one thing instead of trying to be the catch all for every sort of link/save later kind of thing. It's not a URL storage app for anything you find on the web, it's just for reading long articles that you find later offline

I don't have any opinion on Instapaper or Pocket (though I'm quite fond of Marco's articles) but I have to say this is as Apple-y as praise gets. :P
iOS6: improved Siri with 3rd gen iPad support (no Siri for iPad 1/2), Apple maps, FaceTime/AID integration, Passbook, Facebook integration, remodeled storefronts, and other stuff.
SmartCases: $50 polyurethane smartcover/body cases in a smattering of colors.
And in peripheral topics:
AirPort Express: white Apple TV design, simultaneous dual band WiFi, two ethernet ports.
MacBooks (just go to any tech site): refreshed line-wide, including a 15" retina display. New Mac Pro, too.
Excited about Siri and maps, ambivalent/apathetic about the rest. A fall release date means we won't see it until the new iPhone is released. They've all but ensured that I'm upgrading to the next iPhone when it's introduced if they include a 4" model. New MacBooks have some nice hardware, but are still forced to run Apple's awful software. I despise Apple's PC software and an awesome retina display on a MacBook, which I'm sure is an impressive thing to behold, isn't enough to convince me that it's worth trying to use OS X (especially at $2200). I think they should have included a retina display on the 11" Air and am a little surprised they didn't. The Pro retina seems like it's primarily aimed at professionals, and a retina Air could have been a great device to target to the general population. I've been considering an AirPort Express for Airplay/AirTunes (whatever you want to call it), so hopefully this new models means refurbs of the previous model will come down in price.

New Maps are bullllshiiiiiiit.
It's nice maps are vectors, but that never really bothered anyone
It's nice that there is built in turn by turn, but anyone who really needed that would have gotten an app for that which would work offline as well.
The flyover mode is really nice. it looks great! Why the fuck would I use it though?
Two features that people actually used in maps, that is street view and public transport are no longer in the app.
Why would I want this new app when features are no longer present.
To be fair, if you drive a lot a rarely do much bus/train it doesn't really effect you. But if you do this is a Pretty Big Deal.

Hm, you do have a point. I hadn't really noticed. All the pretty and shiny was a bit distracting, I guess. I can definitely see myself using the flyover thing. I'm a sucker for shit like that. In truth, I've never used street view on my phone, but transit directions are nice to have, especially in a foreign city. I can circumvent this easily enough with local transit apps. Still, hopefully that will change between now and the actual release...
As for the rest of the stuff, there are at least a few features I can see myself using the hell out of:
- Do not disturb. Functionality I was easily able to program on my old Nokia E71 (minus the exception list and clever additions). Would be nice to have it back.
- Call rejection features.
- Mail VIP thing.
- Passbook thing.
- iCloud Tabs.
- It's nice that the iMessage and FaceTime implementations have been cleaned up a bit with Apple ID and phone numbers.
Still want to see Notification Centre opened up more... some more widgets in it would be welcome. That's really my main wish at this point.
I'm guessing a few more features will be announced in the fall alongside the next iPhone announcement. Hopefully that's one of them...

Honestly, what I would love, is if the iPhone and iPad were on the same wifi connection the iPhone would send all my messages (not just imessages) to my iPad and I could reply from there.
Yeah, new maps is trash. I'll be basically relying on Google Maps once that comes out, because the public transit thing was 99% of what I used it for. Not having to plan your own route? Fuckin' priceless.
And the new Macbooks are trash. The Retina display is something that most people won't even fucking notice, if you sit a reasonable distance back from your screen. It's just more pixels to push, with a CPU clocked at exactly the same as last-gen and the exact same GPU as the last gen. Plus, owning an Air, I am fairly certain that they new Mac Pro smaller case will have the same airflow issues, meaning it's gonna automatically clock down the processor, which means it will be slower still than a last-gen Pro. And all for the low, low price of $2200+.

That is totally incorrect. The new Macbook Pro's with Retina Display are running the new Ivy Bridge i7's which at the same clock speeds get a 10% performance boost over the previous Sandy Bridge i7's (they also consume less power). They are also coming with the NVidia GeForce GT 650M which is using the brand spanking new Kepler architecture.
That laptop is as bleeding edge as you can get right now in the mobile computing space.
Now the Mac Pro (workstation class desktop) did get a silent refresh that was trash... I think you may have gotten the two mixed up.
If there's a difference between the processors and GPUs there, they don't specify it.
Between those two models, you're paying $400 for a prettier screen you may not even notice, should you be sitting back appropriately.
Of course, if there's different architecture at work, you'd think they could do a better job pointing that out and you know, selling us on it.
You do realize they upgraded the components on the regular 15" Pro as well, right? All of their laptops received updated Ivy Bridge cpus and nVidia gpus (from Sandy Bridge and AMD previously).
Going for the Retina Pro over the regular one gives you a SSD standard, as opposed to a 5400rpm HDD, the retina display, and a thinner, lighter enclosure, along with the same Ivy Bridge/nVidia components. Ivy Bridge has only been on the market for a few weeks now.

I'd say $400 is a bargain for a screen with 4x as many pixels, an ssd, and a chassis that is so much thinner and lighter.
But hey, to each their own.
Everything looks beautiful when you're young and pretty
Average consumer probably doesn't need a retina MacBook yet. Professional photo and video people absolutely want it, though. Retina Pro is a dream machine for those people, and is who it's primarily targeted at. Not sure why they'd include two USB 3 and Thunderbolt ports and HDMI if this wasn't the case.
Public would be better served with a retina Air. Hell, I'd consider buying a retina Air despite trying to get away from laptop/desktop computing and hating Apple's PC software.

It comes down to what people want out of their specs. In this very thread we've got multiple people listing the SSD as a downside, whereas I consider it a complete win. Ultimately, people just have different needs and are frequently bad at understanding that.
SSD is a total win. It's the biggest upgrade I've ever made to any of my computers in terms of perceived speed.
I guess I'm just not $400 impressed. The Macbook Pro is supposed to be the "mobile workstation" kinda deal. The Retina version... I am seriously concerned that limited airflow + 4x the pixels will negatively impact its capabilities.
I guess we'll tell when people put it through its paces. I'm more than happy to retract everything I've said, should it turn out that the Retina version performs just as happily as it's non-retina "little" brother.
That amp/case is cool but ridiculously overpriced even coming from V-Moda.
On an unrelated not, I'm very tempted to buy one of Apple's new iPad Smart Covers. I like to hold my iPad with the smart cover rolled up like a folded magazine, but it has the tendency to detach from my iPad with annoying regularity. Having the cover and back as one piece would prevent that from happening anymore.
