Any idea on a remedy for a iPhone home button that isn't very responsive?
I really have to apply pressure to the thing to get it to work. Makes double-tapping a pain.
Sounds crazy but you could try WD40. I sprayed some on my a while back, pushed the button a lot, then sprayed some more and it seemed to work a lot better after that
SSD is a total win. It's the biggest upgrade I've ever made to any of my computers in terms of perceived speed.
I guess I'm just not $400 impressed. The Macbook Pro is supposed to be the "mobile workstation" kinda deal. The Retina version... I am seriously concerned that limited airflow + 4x the pixels will negatively impact its capabilities.
I guess we'll tell when people put it through its paces. I'm more than happy to retract everything I've said, should it turn out that the Retina version performs just as happily as it's non-retina "little" brother.
Go play with one at Best Buy or Apple Store, they have been on all day so they should be pretty warm already... put one through it's paces and see how well it goes.

I ran a Logic benchmark on one at the Apple store a few days ago. It's pretty much the single best indicator of how well a computer can handle what I throw at it when I'm recording and mixing. It basically involved adding more and more tracks/plugins until the cpu couldn't keep up and started to produce error messages. All four cores were going at 100% for a few minutes, and I can't say it got hotter than my Macbook Pro.

I bought Applecare on the damn thing so I might just bring it in to the local Apple Store, but it's such a minor issue that I feel a bit silly bringing it in for that.

Dumb question: is it possible to organize/filter bookmarks in iBooks? I have a lot of bookmarks in my programming books, but they're listed in the order they were saved. I want to organize them by page number.

Hmm, so I just wanted to stop by here and remind everyone who bought an iPhone 4 pre-antennae fix to file for their piece of that sweet Class action pie (it's like $15 or $30, and you were supposed to have been sent an e-mail about it, if anyone really wants details or needs help finding it, I'll dig up the links, since I still gotta do it myself ro my two that I bought, and have been waiting on ditching for the next upgrade..)
Anyway, I'm thinking of maybe ditching my regular ol' iPhone 4's and was looking for someone who has experience with the infowebz and getting best value outta parts like that, and if they wouldn't mind contacting me via PM to make BFF's in giving me a little guidance/advice. My knoweldge base about the valuations and hardware of mobile devices is jsut enough to be dangerous, so I like to check myself before i do anything if I can.
Apple released their standalone Podcast app today and it's...well....
Supposedly it's supposed to sync play positions and libraries with other devices, but it's not doing so for me. It's also really ugly. I don't care about the skewmorphism, but the general layout of the UI is simply awful. No universal controls, so you have to go into each pod's individual settings and set options for downloads and what to keep.
If syncing worked I'd consider switching from Downcast, but I can't figure out how to do it. And even if I could, I'm not entirely sure I'd switch anyway. It's a promising start in that it works, I guess, but it needs a lot of work before it could be considered a contender for the best paid apps.

Well, it is free...
I used it to listen to a podcast episode, got a phone call, then tried to turn it back on, app crashed and couldn't get it working again.
So, I am not an Apple person, please forgive my ignorance. My boss' wife has an older iPad 2. She would like to use it for texting people, but doesn't want to give a new phone number to them. She does not have an iPhone. Is this possible with iMessage? Or, as when I asked a few months ago, still not possible without rooting? Thanks.

No, its always been possible.
there is an app called textplus that gives you a phone number, for free that you can send and receive text messages from. It uses push notifications to let you know when texts arrive.
iMessage only works between iOS 5 and iOS6 devices; nothing else.

It's pretty nice so far. Does something similar to Safari's iCloud Tabs with Chrome browsers on different machines you're signed in to.
Really wish you could import your mobile Safari bookmarks as I have my bookmarks setup differently on my iPad than I do on my PC. Aside from that, it's pretty much everything I'd want out of mobile Chrome. Persistent browsing on iOS, Windows, and Linux? Hells to the yeah!

Is there a downside to upgrading an iPad 2 to iOS 5?

There is zero solution for this. None.
Pretty sure even jailbroken.
That said, all of my iOS buddies I can chat with on my desktop, iPad and iPhone, and all the conversations are kept in sync. It is pretty great. iMessage is awesome, it is just proprietary.

I think the closest you cold get to a real solution to that problem is google phone, using your current number as your new universal number, maybe.
But I haven't checked how well that works on iOS at all.

No. The iPad can't send text messages. Only iMessages, which only work between iOS devices.
The ONLY other option is one of these text messaging apps as mentioned above that give your iPad a phone number and allow you to text via the app. There is no way for it to "use" your phone's existing number and text message via that, whether it's an Android phone, an iPhone, or anything else.

Ah, got it, thanks. It was just so new, it wasn't on the first page of results. Looking forward to trying this out...
Ummmm...... You guys may want to wait on this. While I had Chrome open, my iPhone utterly froze (no home key functionality or anything) twice now.
It's working perfectly fine for me on the iPad. In fact, it's at least as fast if not faster than Safari. Which is pretty impressive considering 3rd party browsers are forced to use an inferior JavaScript engine. Performance is so nice that I'm wondering if any of the tech sites talking about it being slower ever actually tried using it. I'm wondering if Google is working a little of their fu on their end to push results faster or something to make up for the imposed technical limitations.
The only problem I've had with it is that it duplicated a lot of my bookmarks for some reason after syncing, but the actual browsing experience has been more enjoyable than Safari. The extra keyboard keys when using the URL/search bar are a nice touch, and having a unified URL/search bar is a huge improvement over Safari's separate bars. I'm really quite impressed. I don't see myself going back to Safari for a long time, if ever.
Yeah, the few minutes I've had to play around with it I've been very impressed. Everything good that you mentioned I agree with, and I really do think I'm gonna switch full-time to Chrome, as soon as I can. I won't be trying it for a few days still again on my phone to see if the kinks work themselves out. I don't like having a brick-phone, even if only temporary...

@Thanatos I could be wrong, but I think most phone numbers can be converted to Google Voice for $20. If she does that and puts the Google Voice app on her iPad, she could use it to send and receive texts?
This is theoretical, I've never used the Google Voice app.
edit: the Google Voice app is apparently just for iPhone. I don't know if using the phone number through Google Voice service will be helpful with any other iPadable texting apps.
I like Chrome a lot so far, on iPhone and iPad. Too bad it can't be set to the default browser, but I'm doing ok with Sparrow for email even though it's not default so I'll try out Chrome for a while and see if that irritates me at all. It seems plenty fast too; even though I know it's slower than Safari I don't notice it.

Anyone use their iPhone with an auxiliary cable in their car? I notice that when I plug mine in I can hear music just fine, but ringing and notifications are almost silent. This is only with an aux cable (using our second one now), though... headphones don't do this, and my wife's Galaxy Nexus (before she finally got rid of the piece of shit) had no such problem using the same cord.

I think you can change the volume of alerts/notifications with an aux cable plugged in. When you're in a music/podcast app not playing anything using the volume buttons will change the volume of the alerts/notifications.

If you're getting the line-out from the dock connector, going into a 3.5mm aux jack in your car, I get the same issue in my Volvo.
Doesn't matter what I set my alerts or system volume at. The music/podcast audio is just MUCH louder than any system sounds. Far as I can tell that's just how it is with the dock line out. I've never seen any way to adjust it, but personally, I prefer it. When I used to use the headphone jack, text message alerts would be annoyingly loud when I was playing music.

No, this is with the cable going from the headphone jack to the car. Same jack as I use for my headphones, but wildly different results between headphones and aux cable.
So I watched this again recently. I can't believe its already been 5 years, but its so very interesting seeing people lose their shit at full screen movies and scrolling.
