Well yes, when I'm in those situations I do feel like I may as well have just rolled a Siren, and that's what bugs me.

During the very little bit of multiplayer I was able to do last year when I got the game (using obscure German VPN programs and other arcane rituals), Mordecai seemed to be the most popular character and I can testify that it is fun to play in a group of snipers, except for those "Oh shit" moments when you're all crouched in some elevated position popping off heads across the map and some improbably stealthy Badass Psycho somehow sneaks around behind you all.

Actually those moments were pretty fun too.

I remember playing a Sniper spec Mordecai and found this rifle with something like a 2.5 or something like that ridiculous fire rate. I used that for close range encounters if something snuck up on me. :D

What the hell happened to assault rifles? Pre-patch they fired continuously like SMGs and now they don't.

some do and some don't, it's always been like that

the ones that do are machine guns, the ones that don't are combat rifles

they both use the same ammo and they both receive all benefits from any class mods or talents that boost assault rifles

Yep. Machine guns are the bullet hoses, but are pretty iffy at range unless you get one with an accuracy of at least 80 (some recoil reduction would be nice too). Combat rifles are the ones with small clips that fire in 3-round bursts, making them purely long-range choices (they'll always have a scope of some kind). And then there are the Pounders - the ones with high damage but only six round clips which fire so slowly that they're nigh-on worthless. I never, never bother using those.

Combat rifles are actually great short range weapons if you can overcome their primary weakness (low cilp size). At close range you can usally make all three bullets critical. This combined with a +50% critical weapon drops enemies incredibly quickly.

With RoF upgrades you can actually get the three round burst rifles to the point where a burst can start before the previous one has finished firing.

Get the trigger timing down and they are better than automatic.

What's a good alt-weapon for the Brick? I've been primarily (solely?) using shotguns, but a few times I've run out of ammo and wasn't sure what else I could equip. Pistols with +melee damage? Or does it not matter when berserking?

Berserking uses its own damage calculations, nothing weapons help with.

Brick is good with anything, up to and including snipers if you're in the mood. His bonuses carry over to all weapon types.

My typical loadout is Blast Hammer (shotgun), Scoped Ogre (machine gun), Anarchy (smg), Niddhogg.

Heavy Gunner usually gets me 7+ bursts. Which is like 2.4 seconds of real time shooting, but still.

it's a bitch and a half to find a good machine gun (i.e. one that's accurate and scoped with a good fire rate)

I basically didn't find one until like, level 52

I used a Destroyer as a stop-gap because 30 round bursts are great

On my first Roland I found a Pearl Havoc at level 28 with 91 acc, 13 rof and 12something base damage.

    my latest finds:

a 380 (!!!) damage red cobra assault rifle

    a 514 (!!!) damage stomper assault rifle

    a 408 (!!!) damage havoc machine gun

    despite being awesome guns

nothing kills as fast as my new 387x12 shotgun

also, brick with a cobra sniper is dangerous

Here's the thing about combat rifles in this game: they almost never have anything above X1 elemental, and that's annoying to me. If they do... they only have 12 bullets in the chamber and have 3 round bursts.

And a lot of them have fast reload. No elemental is annoying, but they're still my go-to weapon, especially on Roland. With mods, my current rifle is 95 damage, 14 fire rate, 90-ish accurate, 28 clips size. And I picked it up at level 14. Very few things survive more than a double tap.
