The Guiding Principles and New Rules document is now in effect.
the XL is $30 cheaper (i'm looking at getting a refurb) and has more storage space, but the Premiere has a nicer-looking interface (apparently), is newer, and storage space is never really an issue for me on DVRs. And it appears to have a slew of other features.
Does anyone have experience with either or both boxes?
I'd get the Premiere. It's more future-proof as I doubt they will be adding more features to the HDs (which is what I have).
TiVo is pretty good about rolling out an update each year that adds new stuff, but they pretty much ignore old models once the new ones come out.
I also just read something about how Cox is selling Premieres to customers--the big story though is that somehow Cox is rolling on demand services into the Premieres. That would be a pretty big bonus if other companies started adopting that model. I actually just got a Comcast DVR for my second TV just for on demand stuff, and it is PAINFUL to use after having a TiVo for so long.
I wouldn't worry about storage--TiVos have a SATA slot so you can always expand.
I'm actually probably going to pick up a Premeire specifically because I have Cox and that deal about their on-demand services working with Tivo sold me on it again. I've had an original tivo for about a decade now and love it. Had a love/hate relationship with the TivoHD because of the cablecard/switched digital video fiasco.
Having said that, a cable company, specifically mine finally supporting tivo? I'm right back on that bandwagon.
For your question, get a premeire. It's got upgraded internals as well as the focus for updates. The TivoHD had some issues with certain HD signals, and I know they were working on them last I looked, but you'd have to verify those were resolved. Some issues of grey screens and so on. The premeire, on the other hand, has issues with fetching too much content from the internet in order to make things pretty and slows the whole interface down, but I know they just rolled out an update in the last couple days to help alleviate that. And yes, both have a SATA slot to add a DVR Expander to it if needed.

Buckeye is charging me $50 to install a cablecard and $7/month to use it. Fuckers.
Won't even let me install it myself. All you have to do is put it in and call a number to activate it
If it helps, Cox does the same crap, although it's only $30 and $1.99/mo. $7 seems a little extreme.
