I was totally not interested in this.
Then I saw Garrett is voicing it.
    Then I saw the trailer.

But we're all agreed that the skyhooks are fucking badass, right?

    Because they're fucking badass.

No arguments over here. The way they seem to work in that Gameplay video makes it look like the game will be more open-worldish. Has that been rebuked/discussed already?

I don't really think it will go open world, they can easily limit travel just by having the things being broken and such after all. It's still an awesome as fuck concept.

It would seem I, and a number of you, are at an impasse, because I think that flying daddy looks awful and I honestly can't believe they blatantly used the exact same sound a big daddy makes.

    I will fight you all.

Though, the problem isn't what it is, its the aesthetics of it. Its stupid that they aren't just hearkening back (as the enforcer is like a big daddy in concept, but not in play), but using the exact same imagery and sound for that new thingie.

A mechanical steam powered giant manhawk (or manhawk Iron Man)? Awesome. No need for diver-helmet eyes and whale noises. It should have, I don't know, sounded like a bird? Ya know, because the daddies had diver-helmet eyes and whale noises because of the ocean theme.

It just bugs me. I really love the enforcers, though. That perfectly fits the pieces they've released so far.

Infinite is gonna be pretty damned fun either which way, and it has a blunderbuss/bore/whatever. It has olde timey guns! I am so getting it.

Also, I hope vita chamber like concepts die in a fire here. If you die, you should damn well die.

Regarding the overly-scripted nature of the gameplay video, apparently Jeff Gerstmann (and presumably other press) had that same section demoed live in front of them, and by the sounds of it things can go differently.

Fuckin' sweet. For a game coming out in 2012, they sure are doing quite a media blitz in a short amount of time.

Only after a patch in the first game actually (which is obviously when I played it). I just hated them because they broke verisimilitude in a terrible manner. I'd rather see the game balanced better and not on a concept that you can just die and come back repeatedly. Not that the original Bioshock was very hard, it was 3/4 through my first hard playthrough that I actually died.

I'm sure its mostly place holders, but the trailer was all "WHIZZ, BANG! WOOSH!" and I was all "..." because my brain stopped processing the cool after he jumped on the rails. Just started smoking from my ears.

Then the end with that hawk and it just killed the action for me.

I mean, did you guys see that rail thing? Holy crap. And the blunderthingie!? He was all "POW!" and then they were all chasing him and he was all "ZAP!"

It was also pretty great that Garret acknowledged how stupid it was to just drink some stuff he got off some guy he killed? That has to be the first thing everyone playing BioShock went "what?" to.

    I eagerly await the glowing eyed-political sky/hellscape.

Yes, it really is the same game in a new setting from what I can tell. It's a bit disappointing actually as I said, I really hoped they would avoid having another "plasmid" like system and would accomplish the same effect in new ways. I am not overly worried though, because it still looks awesome and that's the important part.

Especially if I can punt people over the edge to their doom: When will that ever get old?

After the somewhat mild Bioshock 2 I was on the fence when I heard that a third title was in the works. The environment looks great and I'm sure it's going to have some interesting twists and turns, but I don't really know how much further they can push the story and still keep it interesting.

Part of me wishes this game wasn't associated with Bioshock at all. It looks like it wants to be something else.

    Re: The "Plasmids"

There are no "Plasmids" in this per se. Instead de Witt has "Vigors", which provide him with a limited charge of powers. Weaker powers, like the Electo-Bolt have more charges then powerful ones like Murder of Crows. It appears that TK may have infinite charges. As for their origins, I'm guessing magic, which would fit the Wizard of Oz theme that seems to permeate the game.

    Re: The Trailer

Notice that every now and then de Witt has very subtle hallucinations? Check out Saltonstall's badge and the portrait in the bar. They all seem to become more foreign and threatening. This, plus the Indian like war call of the mob makes me think that this game's Big Bad is manipulating the vigors to make everyone in Columbia see the world his way.

    Re: The Bird Daddy/Him

Looks to be less an antagonist and more Elizabeth's obsessive guardian. Man, I will fucking kill for the final fight to take place on his back.

So, we've seen the elctro-bolt, telekinesis and bee plasmids so far. This plasmid business has been massively underwhelming. I'd be happier if they went tech with it, throw me a good electro-bolting-stun-baton-thingie. Maybe we'll get orcs and bi-planes. Aracnum FPS, its coming!

I like the words you're saying and I like the way you make them a coherent thought about the story. That'd be a pretty great idea. I was confused by a bunch of grey haired white guys in a bar suddenly started making war cries like that.

The bird should get a redesign, and I'll be all types of happy with it.

Didn't they crap on communism in 2? I haven't played it, but reviews go with that angle. I expect watching jingoism and bigotry get crapped on is gonna be a lot more fun then anything else ever could be.

I was thinking something similar; seeing the woman sweeping her porch while her house burns down made me think some people are seeing what they want to see. Which means the whole floating city thing might be a shared hallucination.

Nah, considering the U.S. used Columbia as it's own Death Star, it's really flying. Now the real question that no one seems to be asking is what is Elizabeth? We know she can manipulate the weather, has telekinesis, and apparently pyrokinesis. Is she a mutant? A witch(good or bad)? Is she the source of the Vigors? And just who hired de Witt to recover her?

    Fuck, so many questions.

WHY MUST YOU TAUNT ME SO LEVINE?! YOU'RE TEARING ME APART KEN!

EDIT: de Witt starts with TK, though we don't know if he has it naturally or gets it from a vigor.

Yeah, most of the praise for Bioshock was on the story/atmosphere side and most of the complaints were on the actual gunplay side. I'm much of a shooter fan but I thought it was great (and that may be the reason why actually)

My question about that demo is what did happen to the people? They're more lucid than splicers but there's obviously some very serious disconnect.

Graphics and art design look top notch.

Gameplay looks hardly changed from the last one (perhaps less of an atmosphere of pure horror, now more of the RE4-style "Shit is getting REAL and I'm barely scraping through by the skin of my teeth" feel).

Jingoism theme is subtle like a dump truck. Why do gamers need to be beaten over the head with thematic elements?

Oh. They're picking on American nationalism. No one's ever done THAT before. How brave.
    Political mini-rant:

In all seriousness I love the trailer and the game looks like it will be a blast but the politics look to be absolutely dreadful. I don't mind political commentary but this has got to be the single most commonly parodied and attacked concept in modern times. Show me something new. I see great new settings but the idea it is based on are as old as dirt and I'm about tired of hearing them since this is one of those subjects that gets coughed up every few days when someone with a soapbox feels "brave" enough to tell the public something that 90% of them already agree with.

Picking on American nationalism while Stephen Colbert is a national icon is not brave. It is boring. We got the point several decades ago.

    /endrant.

EDIT: I am excited for the game, though. It's visually stunning and the gameplay looks to be top-notch. I'm just sick of getting this same political message every few weeks. It's gone from boring to annoying.

    The game itself looks great...
If the main theme behind surrounding the first "BioShock" was objectivism, the main theme of "BioShock Infinite" appears to be jingoism. At the game's premiere, propaganda posters displayed racist stereotypes of other nationalities, with George Washington in the center, looking like a savior among savages.

This undercurrent matches real American beliefs at the time. Ken Levine read a quote from President William McKinley, talking about his decision to make the Philippines part of the US. It's basically the epitome of Manifest Destiny.

Um. No, it doesn't. Washington was extraordinarily egalitarian for his time, as was Paine, Jefferson and Franklin. None of these men held an Aristotle-esque perspective of 'us and the barbarians'; the whole concept of the new free republic was based on the writings of John Locke, and while some of the founding fathers participated in the slave trade, many of them were quite vocal in their opposition to slavery of any kind.

Nobody would dispute that the plan to annex the Philippines was rooted in some blend of racism & nationalism, but to choose to focus only on that campaign and ignore, say, the Lewis & Clark expedition is, at best, doing revisionist history.
