i mean this game sounds cool, but snarky pessimism makes me look even cooler, so~

i agree. why be critical of anything when i can gleefully consume media without analysis

And yet some of us believe that there can be a middle ground.

Is that merely childish naivete? I say - no.

What says the man in Washington?

    What?
Sorry, no youtube of this scene. I hate myspace.

If it's made by the same guys who made the first bioshock then I am sort of hopeful. And like I said, I'm placing a good bet that the surprise is it turns out you are Andrew Ryan.

I think you'll find not RTFA or even RTFTP is par for the course with me. However, I don't know whether the rapture thing at the start of the trailer is purely a "look we made a funny with a fishbowl!" or it's a hint that it does have some relation to rapture. Or they could be simply using the Bioshock name to cash in on the mindshare of the other games.

So why are we getting another sequel for subpar bioshock and not a follow up to the astoundingly good system shock 2 again?

Because Irrational don't own the right to System Shock?

No, wait, I forgot we aren't allowed to like Bioshock. I loved Bioshock, Bioshock 2 AND System Shock 2, so apparently I'm an anomaly?

The trailer impresses me but I do agree that it's a stupid name. Probably a marketing decision.

I had fallout new vegas preordered the second it went up on steam, because obsidian is at least attempting an UN-dumbing of the game from fallout 3. Call my cynical but Irrational was pretty adamant about hard removing anything from thier 'spiritual successor' that might get confused with RPG mechanics.

Well of course. Obsidian didn't have to, you know, develop an engine and assets with working gameplay. Obsidian rocks when they can hop onto the framework someone else has built. Irrational is building a whole new game. People forget the 'game' stuff takes time too.

I enjoyed Bioshock, very last bit was slightly iffy and in parts it did feel like it dragged on. Didn't touch BS2, I got burned by the drm on the first one. So I've never played it. System Shock 2 was awesome, the whole ghost thing early on creeped me the fuck out.

    Guys, it's called Skyoshock

And it looks awesome. Victorian-era futurism is very different from the 40's-50's futurism of Bioshock, I'll be interested to see what the weapons are like.

I'm still wondering why they're calling it Infinite. It's such a weird choice of title that I can't help but assume it's important to the game in some way. Unless Levine just wants to make it difficult to market another retread sequel like Bioshock 2.

    From the joystiq interview:
Why call it BioShock, then? What not call it something else? Is that marketing? Is that artistic option?

I think it's both because I think BioShock is a lot more than just Rapture. This is a game; it's a first-person shooter set in an amazing place with a story wrought with – from our perspective – ideas that are tied with history. And everything else really is up for grabs. But we felt that if we made this game and it wasn't a BioShock game, that would be a bit of a cheat. To say, "Oh, it's a totally new thing." But it is a new thing, but it's also a continuation of the things we've done before.

A new BioShock? In the air?

I don't know if I'm excited or not. I loved BioShock to death, and even though I realized it was fully competent, I never finished part 2. I just...didn't find it compelling at all.

Just watched the trailer. Looking forward to hearing more about it. I enjoyed both Bioshock 1 and 2.

I'm kind of hoping it won't be chronologically linked to the original Bioshock.

And before anyone points out "Well BioShock 2 wasn't by Irrational!", it doesn't really matter.

It felt enough like BioShock 1, only improved in its mechanics. The developer made no difference there, I was just tired of the setting and feel by the time 2 rolled around (keep in mind I beat the original game three times, twice on 360 and once on PS3).

The only thing I hope is that the RPG elements are much, much deeper than the first 2 games.

I fully expect to be disappointed, but I'll get it anyway because I loved the first 2 Bioshock games.

I don't get the Bioshock 2 hate, myself. The original is a much better experience, but Bioshock 2 is a better game. Mechanically it's tighter, better gunplay, more interesting plasmid use. The plot isn't as good of course.

Hm, I played Bioshock 1 and 2 back to back a couple weeks ago, and I really liked 2 more. The combat was better, and the setting felt more developed. 1 spent the whole game explaining what happened, so in 2 they could have a story set there without it being all about the setting.

I really hope the combat is good in Skyoshock, it sounds like they're paying more attention to it this time.

Andrew Ryan being in the game would be odd, considering that Columbia is based on intense American patriotism, something Andrew Ryan seemed to be against to the fullest degree, unless he is tied into the story in the sense of how he got where he did in Bioshock.

Yeah, it is a better game. But it really made me tired of that world. It retroactively made me like Bioshock less. I couldn't care less about mad geniuses and the dystopias they have created by taking their philosophical beliefs too far, after playing Bioshock 2.

The ending is miles and away better than B1's but ultimately it just feels like the story was being stretched well beyond its means, I mean it couldn't even make it to the end of the first game, let alone then coming up with a whole new thing that manages to tie into all the main characters of the first. Plus it introduces characters and completely ignores them and it continues the silly 'moral dilemma' with the sisters.

Its silly to continue it under the Bio name but at least Levine has thrown Rapture at the wayside and moved onto something else.

Haha yeah. Apparently from a Bioshock wiki he would have been 20 in 1912, so him turning up in some capacity could happen, but I highly doubt it would be him in support of Columbia, unless of course as I said he had a falling out with the ideas of the city to reach his beliefs that lead to the formation of Rapture.
