So this came up in the webcomics thread recently and brought back a flood of memories. I don't think I've played this game in at least 15 years, but I still hum the music to myself at times.
I think the earliest memories I have of gaming are from this:

It's a really basic platform shooter, one of the first ever released for PC back in 1988. Who needed an Nintendo when you had an 80286 clone?
Thanks to playing this game at the age of four, I developed an intense fear of the dark (there was a level where you need to have a lantern to see anything, I was always afraid the lantern would die out, like in Zork), but I also learned to love Space Lego minifigs, like these guys:
Captain Comic would eventually lead me (via my elder brother) to much more ambitious videogames like Wing Commander.

Since then I've always loved sci-fi.
What were your childhood videogame memories? How have they influenced you now that you're older?

Hey, how's it going.
before I could read
I was a dumb kid
shoe do you want to be the very best
like no one ever was
I taught myself about every system I bought from then until now.
I still own them all, except for the Sega CD I had to replace. That was my favorite system growing up.
I actually rented it four times before I could persuade my mother to buy me it, and Lunar: The Silver Star.
I was an RPG geek from the moment Nintendo Power sent out free copies of Dragon Warrior to subscribers. There's something you'll never see again.
I didn't get a PC until Doom came out, which was what sold me on one. That and Wing Commander 3.
Oh I used to do this, although I was old enough to read at the time.
But my Bro (age 10) would be playing Wing Commander, and it was my job (at age 6) to be his co-pilot and read important information to him out of the manual about which gun did what and which ships had armor or turrets and such.
that was a lot of fun
Interestingly enough, it's considered one of the best versions.
I do.
I don't know if you know about me I'm into this old ass mario game with quirky power-ups
one in particular
I forget the name
this + lemmings are my earliest gaming memories, sat on cushions so I could reach the keyboard + joystick of my cousin's amiga
My first RPG.

First game I played.
I used to play Contra in arcades. (Remember those?)
Rodents Revenge
Chips Challenge
Finally getting a Sega CD would be a close second. Lunar and... uh, some FMV games. Yeah, I liked those.

Sonic Chemical Plant music is so good
at first I was like, man that doesn't really show the game
but then I listened and was like, no, this works
gunstar heroes is right up there with rocket knight adventures as having the best mega drive music
Space Quest (Maybe II)
Police Quest
Some other game that was pretty hard because I kept fucking falling of this cliff that was like one pixel wide that you had to navigate.
Loom
Some weird racing game with Drag cars (Corvette was one of the bigger names in that game) where you could customize your car. Fucking mind blowing. Chop the roof, paint it, etc.
There's probably more.
It'll go down in history as a classic. Taken on its own merits, it's a hilarious b-movie.
Also, it's the reason ratings exist.
GTA 3
Burnout 2

my bro had a copy of it for the Atari 7800 (which was backwards compatible with the Atari 2600)
the man in the hat scared me
falling down in those pits scared me
having a limit on how many steps you could take before you died had a pretty profound affect on me
just looking at ET on the cover of the cartridge was pretty horrible, he looked like he was a burn victim made out of feces
It wasn't until more than a decade later that I would get on the internet and learn that the game was universally reviled and widely considered the worst game ever made.

It's taken for granted nowadays, but back then, CD quality music was unheard of for a game.

The Saturn was pretty much untouchable for RPGs until the Playstation buried it.
a mediocre sonic clone, but damned if it didn't have some excellent music
And I remember getting Food Fight but finding out it wouldnt work on the system I had (seriously I loved that game and packrat at Showbizz Pizza)
I've beaten Contra 4, yet this game's ending still eludes me.
except for mario 3 of course
I blame the fact that I got a lot of my games second hand and the big stuff didn't always come cheap
nba live 98 is still my favorite basketball sim game of all time
jam's the best b-ball game ever, though
