How much video quality do you really need though?

there is a significant number of people who prefer watching an LP to buying or playing through the relevant game, Henroid, you'd be surprised

The question still stands. :P
I think there's some people who will understand streaming video doesn't necessarily kick out the greatest, sharpest resolution. But whatever.

Well, the time to encode and upload is variable, but I don't actually have to be present for those parts to process. Playing and editing are pretty fixed in terms of time, so what it really comes down to is let a bunch of computer resources be used for a couple of hours for a regular video or 4-5 hours for a really nice video. And even when I'm uploading/encoding, I can still use my computer for a few other things without much trouble.
So making HD video really doesn't add any personal extra time spent on each set, only automated machine time. I probably wouldn't do it for every game, but a game like Crysis does actually benefit from the HD quality. The difference in effort for me is pretty minimal.

that's normally why they don't stream, they preload or download

Yeah, I've even got a decent connection and whenever I watch someone else's LP, I always let the whole set preload a bit. I hate getting paused right in the middle of a video because something or other gets stuck.

What I was getting at was having high-quality for the sake of high-quality. For me there exists a plain where "detailed enough" runs wild, allowing text to be read and things in the footage not be a garbled mess, while also not being a super-high quality that more or less extends to... nothing.
Besides, aiming for 'detailed enough' extends a hefty handshake to people who are on net connections behind data-caps.
It's a courtesy thing in a way. But anyhow.

In that case, 720 is more than adequate for anything but the tiniest text. 480 might even do for games with decent-sized text.
However, one upside of Youtube is the viewer can select whatever quality they want. So yeah, I upload Crysis vids with the goal being 1080 at the top end, but people can go all the way down to 280. Of course, you can't really see anything at 280, but the option is still there. So the having videos at 1080 on Youtube really doesn't hurt anybody and, if anything, gives people more options to choose from based on preference and internet connection.
The major downside being having to wonder if you'll get caught up in some secret purge, but that's why I keep backups.

I don't know how well-off your system is, but a big time-saver for me is uploading and encoding at the same time. Encode the first video, start uploading it, get the second video encoding, and so on. Cuts the time my computer spends occupied in half or thereabouts.

I mean finish transcoding/encoding one video, start uploading that very same video, and then transcode/encode the next video. So while you're finishing the transcoding/encoding on the second video, the first video is well underway for uploading. Cuts down on the total downtime of your computer since you run both processes at the same time and they both use different aspects of the system.

Ran a small update on the list. And I'm sorry I've slacked on this, real life has been, uh, taxing, so my free time is just like "FUCK I WANNA PLAY SHIT." Anyway, I dug out a list of yellow-status stuff to see what the deal is with them.
Shining Force 2 I can explain; I take it the intrigue of the whole thing died off so I might just kill it. All the other things in the list I need to take the time to find out what happened, or you guys can just like, let me know if you know.
Also I found out tonight that links in my sig were all screwed up. That was embarrassing to have to fix.
And before anyone points it out yeah I'm gonna get the Wizards & Warriors LP added to the list even though I forgot to as of this post. Remember to PM me updates needed.

as a general rule, henroid, I think six months is pretty much as long as you should wait before changing an lp's status to "dead"
because seriously, there's no excuse to go anywhere near that long without either an update or an explanation for why the hell there's no updates

Quitter.
The last couple updates to it I made because I was avoiding becoming a quitter, but my motivation has taken some serious blows recently because of real life bullshit (which I'm not getting into the specifics of; all I can ask is that my word be taken on it). But yeah I guess I'm a quitter maybe. We'll see.

also if we take them off the list then people can hopefully stop spamming them and going "man this sure is a great lp when's the next update???" when the post before them was like, six months ago
okay yeah seriously, most of those threads are almost a year old
stick a toe tag on those threads becuz dey be dead
ed: hmm, Pata just updated, so that's in-progress I guess
Okay I'm gonna do this on your word, right now.
oh i thought this was sarcasm but you did!

If everyone's general sentiment is that, I can pull abandoned games from the list and stick them into their own separate list of shame. Part of me doesn't want to turn away from whatever commitment was at least started into them.
Almost every abandoned LP in the list has only like one or two updates. I don't think there was ever much commitment. Not to mention abandoning is the very opposite of the definition of commitment.

Well just because I call it "abandoning" doesn't mean that's the actual circumstance.
I'll look into it myself in the future, each one, before removing them or not. Because I sure as hell am not removing what I got done for EO2. That's a monument for me. This isn't happening like tomorrow or next week / month though.
Buuuuuuuuuut I can add a note to remind people to not necro-post abandoned LPs listed. Again, can't enforce it, but power of suggestion.
I see your point, but most of the time it really is abandonment. People underestimate the effort it takes to make a good LP and then they don't enjoy making it anymore. Which is fine because sometimes you don't know till you try.
And while necroing abandoned LPs should be frowned upon, I think bumping finished ones should be encouraged. And yes I'm partially just saying this so my own potentially get more views. I think people often don't want to post in them because it has been so long, but I'm sure any LPer would be glad to know people are still reading or watching their stuff.

Finished LPs being necro'd is a different story, I was specifically addressing abandoned ones. Should've clarified that, sorry.

I think most people's "LP threads" are really test posts
by that i mean if we had a version of the tech support fort from SA, people would post the, you know, first couple of episodes there just to really learn what it's like to lp a game, and a vast, vast majority of those people would learn "oh hai lping a game is a lot of fucking work so yeah i'm not doing it"
but we can't really infract or ban people for posting shitty lps, or putting in barely any effort, etc, so what happens is people basically blatantly ignore the whole purpose of this thread, make an lp, go "oh shit this is hard", then abandon it, and people who actually fucking intend to finish their lps and put in the effort have to compete with that mindshare of the one-and-doners
it's, to say the least, extremely frustrating

Well, if people give up because they're overwhelmed, it's nothing to beat them on the head over. Just let it go. This shit can be a pain in the ass to keep up with (I'd fucking KILL for video editing capability on my part).
If someone was repeatedly doing this, then you can beat them over the head. Which I guess I need to finish SF2 or else I'm 1 for 3 on finished LPs.

If you do take the abandoned ones off the list, keep them somwhere. While there are some...not so great ones, there are still some good ones. And it's much easier to consult an index, even if it's is spoiled and in a 2nd post than trying to search for a thread, especially if it's a popular game, a couple years after the fact

I liked the idea behind that Zelda thread. It actually resulted in some stuff that I like seeing from LPs (someone made an MS Paint of whoever was playing Zelda 2, falling into lava in the game and shouting "FUCK!" - goddamn that was hilarious).
I haven't checked the thread for a long time but some of the games did get finished right?
just over half off them are unfinished and most of those have about four videos each.
I liked the idea as well it's just that in practice it obviously didn't work, I'd say most of the people who agreed to do a vid got caught up in the idea.
It actually looks like Elaro was updating in the end but no one else was posting so he gave up, if someone actually wanted to redo one of the unfinished Zeldas, that thread would be an exception to the necro posting rule I guess.
