You are clear, yes. Don't worry about keeping the flow going, just make sure you know exactly what you're going to say. You don't sound like a rambler like me, so clear and simple seems to be the style to go for.

Oh god I'm such a rambler you have no idea how hard I work to stay on track in posts and conversations no idea the stories I could tell they'd go on forever until even I got lost oh my yes
I planned out these tutorials, because I was having real trouble staying on topic. I'd keep getting reminded of something else to say and it turned into a horrible mess. So I wrote out a plan based on what things I think need to be said and arranged them by topic.
Not a word for word script because I can't follow those.
Interestingly when I showed my girlfriend my recordings she kept telling me I don't sound the same. I couldn't pin down what it was she was noticing because she's not the queen of precise criticisms. But yeah apparently I don't sound like this normally. I think it's that the microphone is not picking up some aspect of my voice, the editing is tinnifying it a bit and the fact that I'm trying so hard to pronounce clearly that I'm coming off strange to her.

You sound like you have noise cancellation on a bit too much, or your microphone is really good at warbling your voice. This infrequently makes it a little hard to understand you whenever you speak more quietly than normal. Either way, you should check your audio software and see if noise-cancellation is turned on somewhere, then lower that.

Noise cancellation only has an off/on switch on my driver settings.
I'm already having a problem with my microphone picking up my controller clicks and button presses so I'm gonna have to mess about with the settings to try and fix that.
I turned my mic down a bit to see if it would help with that and then ended up with that loss a couple of times.
It's also because I'm mumbling at the end of my sentence though, so I could always just fix that.

I guess not mumbling is the easiest way to fix this, but at the same time I'd say that noise cancellation turned off would be a smart move. If you're willing to put in some more effort, you can just edit out the keyboard presses in Audacity after recording; that's more reliable than trusting your sound card to do the work.
Then again I'm not sure how loud keyboard presses are. I know without noise cancelling my mic picks up my button presses on my PS3 controller, and the keyboard would be louder than that unless you have soft keys or something. Still, to me warbling voices are more annoying than extra clicking and typing noises. YMMV.
But yeah you come in really quiet sometimes and it's a pain to try to hear what you're saying. The commentary isn't terrible though.
By the way, Rent are you still going to bash my LP? I want to see if you hate it as much as I do, or at least point out flaws that I missed.
And since I'm bored and want to whore out my videos, I wonder how relevant this old video I made is to LP'ing:

I know the points you are talking about. I marked them down as personal problems with trailing off. It only happens when I mumble.
I wont be turning off the noise cancelling because then it picks up a huge amount of static.
Like huge. It's way too much of a pain to get rid of.
Sorry, I'll just try my best not to mumble.
Oh and it picks up the ps3 controller clicks with noise cancelling on.
I don't plan to talk as much as that in the normal let's play anyway. I'm going to let my gameplay do the talking. The story itself has quite a lot of nice voice acting I want people to hear and I think me babbling away will really cut off the atmosphere. My mic has a nice button that turns it off which I'm going to do during cutscenes or during sections of missions when I know I don't need to talk or don't want to talk. That should help cut off unnecessary clicking.

Ahahaha. The walls have eyes and such. I'll make a thread for it tomorrow, I'm just worried it might bore people seeing how I have no idea where I'm going or what I'm doing in a real survival horror title.

One day I will lets play a survival horror, a new one, simply so people can see me freak the fuck out.
My first ever was dead space. Oh jesus, so scary. I'm such a wuss.
stalker doesn't really count, only certain parts were scary.
I survived them by pausing frequently and chatting to people on steam to let tension out. For dead space I would pause and stop playing for a while.
I reckon it'd be interesting to see how I'd go if I had to do a whole level at a time. I reckon I'd have a kind of nervous breakdown.

I've been doing some thinking.
I don't think I will be doing commentary, live or post, in the main story missions of my let's play. What few things I have to say can be done with either youtube annotations or some simple lines of text under the updated video. I've watched some other prototype let's plays and they talk all over the story.
The point of this games story is to present something epic and atmospheric. I think me chattering away during missions when I'm supposed to be kicking ass and chewing bubble gum would really take away from that.
The actual plot of the game is pure gibberish as is all the "science", but the atmosphere is sex and epic. I aint tainting it with my crappy accent.
I'll probably make a few freeroam vids here and there to explain new powers as I go along and I might talk a bit in there. But for the most part I think I'm gonna do the main missions silently.
I'm going to make some combat tutorials that I will chatter all over and various miscellaneous guides, like making ep cash quickly etc. So I don't think anybody will miss out from this as you can learn what I am doing in there by watching those alongside the let's play.
There isn't really much filler in the actual prototype missions, they're kind of all action all the time, so there isn't really much room to talk in them without ruining the funs.
What do you guys think?

I think I fucking hate subtitle LPs, you read them and end up missing the action.
The problem with Prototype is that it's fun if you ignore the story and most of the story missions, the best way to play is to go for the all out sandbox experience.
It will therefore be hard to LP if you plan on treating the game seriously and will probably be boring to be honest.
I thought your test vid was fine but I prefer to watch VO LPs over other types. All of my above comments are also personal preference, of course.
I also thought in your test vid you kept the rambling to a minimum, just watch one of my Fallout vids and you'll see what true inane rambling is.

This turned out to be far more ranty that I intended. Thankfully it's really addressing only one problem, so please don't take this as a slight against you or anything.
Morninglord, video quality is fine. Commentary would be okay except,
The microphone volume and noise cancellation. Still very bad. You still get super quiet a few times there, and your voice warbling so much is very distracting, for me at least.
Since you say without noise cancellation screws with your recording even worse than with, the only thing I can say is to speak louder than you normally would. Unfortunately with your current recording settings I don't think you have the convenience of carrying a conversational voice; it just comes in too damn quiet.
I have the same problem with my laptop. I'm putting my money on the soundcard being the fuckup, which means there's not much you can do unless you feel like shelling out more cash.
Aside from audio quality, commentary was okay. It was informative, a little monotonous. Honestly though? That monotony could be blamed on low quality audio; inflections in your speech become more flatlined throughout your commentary, making it sound less lively than if your voice came in clear. This monotony made it a little hard to follow on with what you were doing in the video, at some points I was lost for a moment figuring out what stunt you were showing off.
Considering the immutability of your hardware, I would recommend trying to speak in a more lively, and more loud, manner. That seems to be the easiest fix you can do.
they are the worst thing and a really, really lazy way to do an actual subtitled vlp
Except adding annotations throughout a ten minute video is a very laborious process which is the exact opposite of lazy. It also allows for people to switch commentary off, essentially, if all they want to do is watch a game being played with skill.

except youtube annotations are ugly and stupid and are incredibly easy to add to a video and have ugly ass bright color boxes surrounding them and a tiny font necessitating fullscreening it just to read it
also if you don't want to see or hear commentary, you shouldn't be watching an lp, you should be playing the game itself

I'm making this for all those people who said they'd be happy to sit there and watch me play. I'm not really doing it to show off for the sake of it and I don't care if I don't have very many views because I'm not being chatty mcchatterson. I want to show off the full potential of the skillset of the game. I'm very good at it and I was brought to realise this by people in this community. Believing that I have skill in something does not come naturally to me, quite the reverse in fact. I have a lot of insecurity issues.
It is a continuously underrated game and this makes me feel like I'm playing a completely different game. I want to show this different game to other people and let them decide for themselves wether I'm full of shit.
I have about zero interest in chatting merrily with someone and ignoring the reason why I decided to make it in the first place. My number 1 primary interest in using voice commentary was to present gameplay information in a clear and understandable manner, with the intent of teaching other people how the gameplay systems work so that they can, if they wish, pick up the game and play just like me. (Because I believe I am not anyone special and that if I teach anyone the right method they can learn to play like I can) Combat tutorials will pretty much 100% cover this, so now I'm left wondering what the point would be.
I'll have a think about it some more. Voiced commentary is a lot of work and I'm having problems with it for a lot of reasons.
For context, I have about three things I feel the need to communicate in the entirety of the first half hour of prototype. A little note about consuming people for health (it doesn't work if you get knocked or stunned in the middle of it). A small remark about detection (the game does the absolute worst job of explaining the stealth meter). The intro welcome and hello and such.
That's it. That's the only time I felt like I should say something. Recording ducking and muxing half an hours shit for <1 minutes talking struck me as really dumb. Which is what prompted my question.
