That video is pretty nice. It's cool to see some of the jedi armors and robes in action. I also enjoyed some of the character models they had going. Bearded Jedi FTW.

It's a fact that human Jedi had a higher chance of surviving Order 66 if they were sporting a beard.
Completely being silly, please don't bring your lore proof into my joke. Hah

I wonder if I'll be able to play as a blind human jedi with a blindfold. I always liked that idea.
He sees only with the Force.
And no I don't like or care about that alien race who are blinded from birth or whatever. I don't identify with non human beings. Sorry.

Okay duders. If you want in the beta, just go register. There is at least one person who registered last month and never posted and got in. And it seems like its still in very early beta.
So long as Bioware doesn't push the game out the door early, its going to be really good. I mean if you hate MMOs and hate Bioware games, this isn't the game for you. But then why are you in the thread?

And you... the Miraluka were an awesome idea!

I loved the crap out of general kotas blinded skin in TFU. I would slap that skin on and run around with a yellow lightsaber and my glitched out infinite force/health save being fucking awesome.
So yes I thought he was quite spiffy.
I said I don't want to identify with them, which has got nothing to do with wether or not they are awesome. I like the idea of a blind human jedi because that's a unique member within a given race. Making the whole race do that kind of lost the appeal, yknow?

So yeah, I'm loving Jedi Knight cloaks and robes. I can't wait to level my Guardian. I'm gonna be force kicking Sith and bounty hunter scum for truth and justice!

Still waitng to see NPCs do more than stand there and shoot at you while getting shot. It just looks so very bad.
I want to see NPCs running for or setting up cover if they are ranged.
Trying to duck or dodge incoming fire.
To melee players that get up close instead of standing there shooting boringly.
Stop just standing and shooting boringly.
They should make all ranged combat fairly inaccurate but when you/them do hit something it does more damage and would equal the same dmg 5 shots hitting in a row if one of those more inaccurate shots hit. Just so you don't see some guy just absorbing ridiculous amounts of gun fire while standing still shooting back. It just looks really bad and unaction-movie like.
/Still waiting to be impressed with ranged combat animations/action of any type.

Who in this thread hasn't already registered?
Or, are you talking about registering somewhere else? Because I've been registered since February.
If I wasn't waiting to buy a new laptop until just before this comes out and it wasn't a mac that I will run boot camp for this on, I would have signed up.

Yeah, I'm willing to bet that the graphics on this game will go from being outstanding in terms or particle effects, light bloom, terrain etc. to god aweful. It's like that with most MMOs but with the art style they have for TOR, it seems like it will be playing in a cartoon versus anything realistic. I'm tempted to upgrade my video card and/or memory when this comes out.
Do Imperial Agents use Sniper Rifles? And if so, do they use slugs or the energy projectiles that blaster rifles/pistols use. I know it was energy projectiles in Battlefront, but it strikes me as odd that someone like an Agent, who would probably want to be stealthy, would use a tracer round.
I'm not registered. I don't want into the beta.
I'm happy to wait.
This.
I don't do betas. Looking forward to the game, but I don't feel the need to beta test it. I feel obligated to do bug reports as it is, so playing the game early when it's probably really buggy it would feel like a job, and I just want to enjoy the game when it's ready.
I want a pre-order bonus of letting us set up an account and use the character creator to make you're first character on a server. This would let you a better chance at any character name you wanted and it lets them see what kind of volume they're going to get on which servers. Granted not everyone will keep to that first server.
I know I would pre-order if I wasn't already and I'd be pumped knowing I have Catastrophe the Jedi waiting to get played.

Over 24 hours and no posts? Did you all get into beta without me?
So, I have some thoughts.
I've been excited about The Old Republic ever since I first heard about it. But I think my doubts have been slowly collecting about the game.
The only major innovation revealed so far, as compared to World of Warcraft, is the story. That's probably why they talk about it so much. As players of TOR have often repeated, this feels like WoW in space -- with the exception of the engrossing, epic story.
Compare that to Guild Wars 2, which I've been learning about recently:
So, I've been reading and listening to a bunch of stuff about GW2 this morning and honestly, I don't know why more people aren't talking about it. As far as innovative upcoming MMOs go, this appears to be the one to watch.
In fact, after looking at some of the features, it's plainly obvious that Arena Net has taken a very long, close look at what's worked in other MMOs -- and more importantly, what hasn't. And they're changing things. Dramatically changing things. It's fantastic.
I've only started looking into the game today, and from that, here's the stuff that has really interested me so far:
In terms of combat...
- Scrapping the Holy Trinity of Tank-Healer-Damage. Instead, in GW2, every character is truly, actually versatile enough to fulfill enough different roles to accomplish your goals. There will be no dedicated healer class, and they'll be doing combat differently.
- Dramatically emphasizing positioning and movement in combat. You can dodge spells and other projectiles. You can summon a wall of flame to deny a space, or knock an enemy back into the wall of flame. It looks like you can also cast while moving.
- A bunch of other stuff that I loved about the original Guild Wars, like having a large number of available skills but only being able to use a small number of them at once -- and then figuring out creative ways to use combinations of skills that work together well. (Even designing your entire team around it).
And then generally...
- Making the game world feel alive with a persistent game world that changes based on player actions. In WoW, the rogues and scoundrels of the Defias will never take over Elwynn Forest. But in GW2, if you don't help the farmer with his troll problem, the trolls will take over his farm. And if you don't help the nearby village either, the trolls will take over the village. Don't help the nearby town, and the trolls will assault the town. That's an awesome idea, and something I've wanted in an MMO for a decade.
- Increasing the incentives for playing the game with other human beings. Remember in WoW how you often wouldn't want someone to wander over and "steal" your mob's kill? How everyone was sort of working on quests independently? GW2 is looking to change all of that with a bunch of different stuff.
- Cutting the grind from the game. There will be interesting action and story from level one on. Quest cutscenes and voice overs. No quest text (though you can read more about back story if you want).
I'm really interested in hearing more about how GW2 is gonna shake things up in the MMO world. In fact, I'm far more impressed with what I've read and watched about GW2 than I have been with what I've learned about The Old Republic... I really wish Bioware (and other upcoming MMOs) could be this ballsy with their innovations.
I don't get why Bioware can't do more with their game when it comes to shaking things up and making significant improvements and changes. Hopefully we're wrong about this basically being WoW in space.

Well, Bioware has never been known for their outstanding gameplay. The combat in KOTOR sucks, Mass Effects are poor man's third person cover based shooters (it got a little better in 2, though) and Dragon Age is a weird mess of trying to smash together turn-based and real time combat. In that light, it's not such a huge surprise that TOR is shaping out to play like that one popular MMO plus story segments.
I enjoyed the combat from Dragon Age. But you're right -- the other games didn't have very good combat. That's probably why I never finished Mass Effect 2; I just couldn't get into the actual combat of the game -- and I wrote a pretty scathing review of the original game.
I just seriously doubt that the story alone will be enough to really make me want to invest any kind of time into it. In every other area of the game besides the story, I have significant doubts. The graphics are plain and disappointing; a throwback to 2005. The animations and feel of the combat is very WoW-esque. They follow the tank-healer-dps paradigm.
And even all of that might be okay if they had some other kind of innovative framework for the game -- maybe something like the PvE dynamic events of guild wars, or perhaps something especially interesting with PvP, or crafting, or something.
It's pretty much WoW plus a nice story, so far. And a space combat minigame. I have been hoping all this time that they'll roll out a bunch of other cool features, but -- alas -- nothing, so far. With less than a year til release, that worries me.

edit. There's this real lack of urgency to everything. It's not so much "a fight to the death", but rather just "swinging our swords around a bit".

It doesn't really look that graphic intensive to me.
Also, the male faces look really, really ugly and off. The females look fine.
Either that or it was just the editing/music.

They throw in some bells and whistles for good hardware -- but make sure it's playable on systems that were mid-grade 6 years ago.
