I don't know if you'll get those kind of updates until open beta to be honest. I just don't see us getting objective looks at the game from any objective source until we can make up our mind for the game ourselves. Maybe IGN or something will get a preview, but they probably won't get much of one compared to what the consumers will get anyway.
You said the same thing I was gonna say.
You sound a lot nicer than I do when I say it. :P

Don't worry, there will be Unique Companions for $15-$20 in the TOR Store.
I kid!
I hope....
Oh yikes... Oddly enough, that didn't even enter my mind til you said that.
After google'ing I apparently missed the articles talking about job listings for BioWare Austin and beta sign-up fine print that talk about BW using microtransactions points in SWTOR. What those points would get you is anyones guess, since it's still so early.
Wow. This is what happens when you try and limit your intake, you miss big old things like that.
Edit: MTs for things don't give you a competitive edge (ie server transfers, vanity pets, mounts), I'm ok with. Charging real money for in game currency, crafting mats, special quests/content, extra companions, access to certain Races, I do have a bit of an issue with. See: Cryptic MMOs.
Even WoW sells horse armor (well, horse armor made of stars or something) these days, so I'd say the days where you simply paid a sub and got everything are gone.
Blame the idiots who bought things from the cash shops when they first started putting them in, though the latest wisdom to come down from the mount says most MMOs won't be able to stay alive unless they get income from a cash shop anyways. Not enough non-WoW dominated market to go around, so they say, and cash shops actually bring in more dollars than sub fees do, because whatever you don't make from people who wouldn't have subbed is made back by people spending 60$ a month for consumables or whatnot.
I want to play this game so bad
god dammit not coming out for a long time

So I can be a badass Gunslinger(AKA Space Cowboy) with a crew of hot girls and robots who will scavenge up parts, make guns and go treasure hunting for me while I'm out being awesome?
God damn, I didn't want to get excited about another MMO but they are sure making it hard not to.
Does anyone have any opinions on any SWTOR podcasts? I see that Darth Hater has one. Are they generally worth listening to? I'm about to run into a shit ton of vacation days and I figured I could at least listen to something interesting while traveling. Please tell me DH isn't a loud, obnoxious, self-fellating British guy.

Cryptic mostly doesn't do gameplay altering sales, though. About the closest you can get is the end-game ship variants, which you can gain in-game anyways. The buys are just a way to get them if you can't spare the time to unlock them.
Plus, the races thing I can understand with STO. You wouldn't expect to see many Klingons in Star Fleet when the Klingon empire is literally just a sector away, pillaging and looting one of your starbases. It keeps them rarities.
My main concern is paying for crafting mats or other gameplay altering features. Bioware hasn't pointed anything out about that yet.
MT's are the future of MMO's it seems, so yeah.
Speaking personally, if they put out some interesting MT companions after release, i'll probably get them. If I can run around with a homicidal, human hating HK-48 you can damn well bet i'm going to run around with an HK-48. I just won't ever expose him to art.

I like the darth hater website. The podcast has some good information. But, I hate listening to 2 or 3 of the people on it. Then again, I'm one of like 2 people on Itunes that didn't give them 4 or 5 stars. I guess the guy who does the site isn't on the podcast.
All the good information is on the website, the podcast talks about how awesome it is that they got the information. They do a desent summary but diverge into how lucky they are to have so and so sit down with them or that. I just find it to be a little self centered. They are under the belief that the bioware marketing team is publishing materials to screw with them or trick them. I want to think whenever they use "us" they mean the whole fan base but i get the feeling they think it's more personal.
They tend to ramble on a bit on the podcast. Personally, I'd prefer if they had recorded some of the interviews they've done and put them in the podcasts, but whatcha gonna do. Mostly, they just speculate on what's going to happen like the rest of us. Most of them have had hands on experience with the game though, so they have a bit of perspective, but not too much.
It's tough to run a fansite about a game that is not out yet. You really can't create much content beyond what the SWTOR people release.

Yeah, sorry. I should say that I still listen to it every week and agree with the fact that doing 45min - hour each week when all we get are fan fridays is pretty hard.

Yeah, once the game comes out, the content pretty much will record itself. All you have to talk about is moments you've had in the game that you enjoy. You can talk about builds, PVP strategies, PVE strategies, places to get crafting material. We've seen WoW podcasts that have been chock full of content for the last like 5 years. They've done a good job making themselves the major SWTOR fan website that they'll hopefully be able to take advantage of when the game comes out. There are people that live off the WoW fansites they run.
the Alderan is just Arathi Basin. You control capture points to fill up a timer, in this case it's lowering the HP of starship.
Alteric Valley was my favorite for a long time until it became rushing the last boss. The way AV was set up felt more like open world pvp. If you were more interested in roaming with friends in an enclosed area with good respawns it was awesome.
Even small scale would be lots of fun if it involved securing landing zones and having infantry landing and moving out. I wonder if a Leage of Legends or DOTA style game could work as a scenario in an MMO.
I wonder if a Leage of Legends or DOTA style game could work as a scenario in an MMO.
Hah. That would certainly be interesting. Having a Player travel down lanes of a forest or ship/station with NPC creeps destroying turrets and eventually making your way to the base or Bridge/Shuttle Bay. Although, I don't know how you would handle the "leveling" and "buying gear" part of DotA/LoL. I'm pretty sure MMO people aren't going to want have to "re-gear" every match they get into.
Maybe something along the lines of keeping the gear you are wearing, but gaining weapon and armor enchants as you level during a match. I don't know, just brainstorming for something that won't ever happen.

The death of old school AV is what really turned me off of WoW.
I mean, you had this hours long epic battle to control a zone. Complete with knights charging, bombers blowing stuff up, infantry zerging the enemy side, and even an occasional giant Godzilla style monster rampaging through enemy lines.
But that's not good enough. Noooo. Some people didn't like that they can't get into an AV quickly because all they cared about was grinding honor, back when the PVP game was a massive honor grind that literally never ended.
So rather then revamp their servers to accommodate more people to allow you to play in a map where you are, essentially, a hero amongst lots and lots of generic soldiers, like in the real Warcraft games. What does Blizzard do? They took everything that made AV awesome out and turned it into a generic zerg-fest.
Oh, and when people got pissed that that still didn't do anything to make AV's grindable at the absurd rate they wanted, they added in tickets.
I mean christ. It's like they didn't learn anything from when they made open world PVP a pain in the ass to take part in. Sometimes the point of doing something is to have fun. Not to blaze a path of glory through the game as fast as possible.
Suffice to say that if SWTOR manages to make a zone that is like that, or even improves on oldschool AV, they'll have my money so hard.

This is pretty close to the concept behind the original Alterac Valley (in WoW). You could collect armor scraps and sheep testicles to hand in in exchange for buffs for your side. With the ultimate goal still being 'push from this side to that side'. What AV turned into isn't really worth talking about, but at it's root I really liked the idea of a massive raid vs raid back and forth battle, with NPC's being integral to success.
I always really liked the idea of healers being useful in PvP without relying upon another player to not suck. Having friendly NPC's that are actually dangerous rather than just being scenery with the ability to patrol and auto-attack makes makes healing a lot more interesting.

My first organised PvP experience in WoW was a game of AV. I logged into a running game, played for eight hours, then quit before the game was over.
It was marvellous.

It was so cool to see these enormous battles with npcs charging to and fro . . . And then it was changed into a weird sort of give and take where players of opposing factions ran past each other to attack the generals.
Suffice to say that if SWTOR manages to make a zone that is like that, or even improves on oldschool AV, they'll have my money so hard.
This, so hard. I like open world feeling PvP... I like having a big ass battle that takes for ever as you push back enemy lines.
Just thinking about a battle like that while playing a class with cover mechanics... I need a new pair of pants.
On top of that, think of the tactical possibilities with companions. Each potential move in a battleground could have a companion flanking or acting as a diversion.
I want one of my companions to be a snow-cone machine with legs. It can follow me around making delicious snow cones. Except when we are on Hoth or something, then it switches to hot chocolate mode.
That wasn't important or anything, I just felt like sharing.
edit: (yay for the rambling to be a totp post)
I know there is at least one astromech droid in the EU that was modified to dispence ice-cold drinks on command, so there is precidence.
Suffice to say that if SWTOR manages to make a zone that is like that, or even improves on oldschool AV, they'll have my money so hard.

I was only joking, Decoy. However, it does seem whenever anyone says micro-transactions, in any thread, all it does is chum the waters.
